Shunde

Shunde (顺德; Shùndé) is a city near Foshan, in Guangdong Province in China.

Shunde is well-known in the Guangdong province as a place with great Chinese food. Its population and economy is starting to grow and its rapid economic growth is mainly due to furniture production while increase in population is due to an influx of workers. With this influx of people seeking work, there has been an increase in popular services like body massage, foot massage and spas.

The main bus terminal in Shunde is in Daliang District. The Daliang Bus Station has coaches coming in from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hongkong, Dongguan and also from Guangxi, Jiangsi, Hunan, Henan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shanghai and other provinces. [2]

A D-Class light rail line connects Shunde to Guangzhou South Railway Station (10 minutes/ 10 yuan) and Zhuhai (1 hour/ 60 yuan). Trains run frequently at peak times, and aproximately once an hour for the rest of the day. To get to the station, ask a taxi driver for "Shùndé qīngguǐ zhàn".

Enjoying a great and relaxing body massage is a must during your visit to Shunde.

Shunde is also famous for their foot massages and washing of feet(沐足）, being a lifestyle for many of the locals. Many shops are found in the district of daliang, along gui pan (桂畔路）. It is approximately 40-60yuan for a session for an hour.

Another common lifestyle for the locals is washing of hair at salons, 洗头。 Generally every hair salon offer this service, accompanied with a head and neck massage. Costs range from 10-20yuan.

While not generally considered to be in the same league as its neighbours with regards to shopping, with the increase of middle-class individuals, Shunde is seeing an increase in the number of shopping centres.

There is a saying in Shunde '食在广东,厨出风城' which means when you eat in Guangdong, you are actually eating in Shunde, in reference to the many great chefs in Guangdong Province who originated from this small town.

One must-try is the Double-Skin Milk (Shuangpinai双皮奶). It is a famous cantonese dessert that originated in this town. It tastes a bit like custard and can be eaten hot or cold, or mixed with other desserts. Besides double-skin milk, one have to try the other desserts too. A famous dessert shop is ren xin(仁信老铺）, which offers a large variety of desserts for individual taste buds.

Drinking traditionally begins at dinner and spills over to local bars afterward. KTV (karaoke) is a popular past time, and is as much about the beer as the singing. If beer is not your taste, try the Chinese rice wine. clear and strong!

Stay safe Edit

Whilst not free from crime, Shunde is generally safer than the bigger cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan. Nevertheless, it helps to watch out for pickpockets who have been known to work in public buses and other crowded areas. In addition, avoid going out alone at night and wearing flashy clothes and accessories.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.

Dyeing dogs in China takes off

Beijing, China (CNN) -- His name is Kung Fu, and he has become a celebrity pet in one Beijing neighborhood. He looks like a panda, and he is named after a panda -- but he is actually a dog with a dye job.

His owners, husband and wife Li Changxian and Yang Kun, say they love pandas so much they decided to give their dog a makeover. The fur around his eyes, ears and paws have been dyed black, and the rest bleached white.

"I think he loves it," says Li. "Since he's been dyed, he gets lots of love and attention."

Passersby stare in awe, as Kung Fu bounds down the street. Children can't wait to pet him.

It's the latest trend in pet fashion in China: dyeing pets to look like something different -- from pandas to tigers to Haibao, the blue Gumby-like mascot of the Shanghai World Expo.

In the window of the Ruowen Pet Spa in downtown Beijing, a white poodle has been dyed to appear as if it is wearing a bikini. Next to it is Raphael, named after a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. His fur has been shaved and dyed green. Yes, just like a turtle.

On this particular day, Raphael is getting a touch-up. He belongs to the pet store, and employees say his face is getting a little "faded." First his fur is bleached, then washed, dried and finally dyed. Depending on how extensive the makeover is, the whole process can take up to eight hours.

But how safe is it? Mary Peng, who runs the International Center for Veterinary Services in Beijing, warns that many coloring products used in China may not be tested for pets. The dye can be absorbed through the skin or ingested when pets lick or clean themselves.

"Sometimes these dyes can be fatal for pets," Peng says. "Most of this industry, especially hair dyes and coloring for pets, is so new that there might not be a lot of regulation."

Peng says breeders will even dye puppies and kittens just to make them look more attractive.

"I saw a black-and-white tuxedo kitten who was dyed to look like a seal point Siamese because it would have a higher sale price," Peng says. "This animal did not do very well. There was probably the use of industrial grade hair coloring products. The animal was sick and required extensive treatment and hospitalization."

Peng adds that the number of pet owners in China is growing rapidly as incomes rise and they have more money to spend on their furry friends.

Ruowen Pet Spa also offers a wide variety of fancy pet products and treatments. Pet owner Tomic Chao sits in the waiting area, while his dog is given a rose spa bath, which includes dried rose petals and luxury soap.

Chao says he would never change the color of his beloved dog's fur.

"I think it's okay for people to change their hair color if they want, but how do we know this is what dogs really want, and if it's healthy?"

Store manager Guan Jing, who has dyed many dogs, insists all coloring products are tested and safe. "The dyes we use are made of natural ingredients. We have had extensive discussions with the supplier. Even if the pets lick the dye, it's not harmful to their heath."

Guan also suggests a new "do" can even help a pet's self-image.

"If we encourage and praise the pet, it will understand from our facial expressions that it's pretty and then it will be happy," she says.

6 Things You Need to Know About China's Dog-Eating Yulin Festival

In Yulin, summer solstice marks the coming of the hottest days for the Chinese city. The remote, woody city (literally “jade forest”) celebrates the astronomical event with its annual dog-eating festival. The local tradition reportedly began in the 1990s, but the local practice of eating dog meat outdates written history.

According to Chinese lore, eating dog meat stimulates internal heat, making it a food that wards off winters’ cold. But on this inaugural day of summer, it’s a superstition that’s driving dog consumption: the meat is believed to bring good luck and health. At the festival, hotpots are fired up, lychees peeled and liquors poured. Animal activists estimate over 10,000 dogs are killed for the festival, according to China Daily, the government’s English-language mouthpiece.

2. China doesn’t have an animal protection law, but experts still claim the festival is illegal.

A draft law was proposed in 2009 to punish animal abusers with a 6000 yuan (over $900) fine and two weeks of detention. It also proposed that organizations found guilty of selling dog or cat meat be charged with a fine between 10,000 yuan ($1600) and 500,000 yuan ($80,000). To date, the National People’s Congress has not signed the law; it has yet to issue a statement on it.

Still, some legal experts argue the festival is illegal under regulations passed by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2013 which require laboratory quarantine for animals before transportation, a practice that’s “rare to see,” animal rights lawyer An Xiang told China Daily. Even more, many dogs are stolen, abducted, raised in households, making dog trade difficult to document (there are also dog farms, too). In 2011, though, Chinese activists stopped a truck transporting dogs to a restaurant and paid 115,000 yuan (then, around $17,000) to free the animals.

3. The festival is also a public health concern.

The festival is more than an animal rights issue. It is a public health concern. Dogs are often transported in a crowded, brutal and unsanitary atmosphere, sometimes from unknown sources, only to arrive at the festival sick, dying or dead, according to CNN. China’s food safety administration bans selling meat from animals in these conditions. Then there is rabies. Prolonged exposure to unvaccinated dogs increases the chance of contracting the deadly disease. And studies have found, according to CNN, that Yulin’s incidence of human rabies cases is among the top ten of Chinese cities.

4. Outrage on social media over the 2014 festival was unprecedented.

For years, hundreds of thousands of Chinese netizens have been vocal in opposing dog-eating festivals. Though keeping dogs as pets was banned during the Cultural Revolution, dog ownership has become popular among China’s growing middle-class.

In addition to a petition, puppy rescues and editorials, many celebrities joined in protesting Yulin’s festival on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. Actress Sun Li uploaded photos of her son with their adopted stray dog, and singer-actress Yang Mi posted a plea to end dog eating with an anti-Yulin festival poster that’s flooding Chinese social media. In the poster, a dog sheds a red tear, saying, “Please don’t eat us. We’re your friends.”

5. The 2014 festival may have begun early to avoid protestors.

Yulin locals have reportedly kicked-off the celebrations a week early to avoid activists and journalists, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency. Street vendors and restaurants selling dog meat have covered up the Chinese character for dog, too, in an effort to mitigate controversy.

6. Dog-eating festivals have been banned in the past, but Yulin officials claim the festival does not exist.

In 2011, Chinese authorities banned the Jinhua Hutou Dog Meat Festival after a widespread social media campaign launched by animal rights activists. The 600-year tradition, held annually in September, commemorated a fourteenth-century battle victory when a rebel leader ordered dogs in Jinhua to be slaughtered because their barking warned the city of his army’s approach.

In contrast, the Yulin Municipal People’s Government issued a statement on June 7 in response to the social media outrage, stating that while locals in recent years have hosted small gatherings to consume dog meat and lychees, a widespread festival for these activities has never existed.

“The so-called summer solstice lychee dog meat festival does not exist,” it reads. “Neither Yulin government nor social organizations have ever held such activities.”

Después de advertencias, disparos intimidatorios y un intento de fuga, un barco guardacostas argentino hundió a un barco pesquero de bandera china, según informó en un comunicado la Prefectura Naval del país sudamericano.

Este lunes, la nave Prefecto Derbes persiguió y hundió al buque Lu Yan Yuan Yu y después tuvo que rescatar a parte de su tripulación.

La embarcación de bandera china fue sorprendida pescando de manera ilegal en una zona económica exclusiva argentina cerca de Puerto Madryn, en la provincia de Chubut, en el sureste de ese país.

"Se efectuaron reiteradas llamadas por radiofrecuencia y se realizaron señales sonoras y visuales para hacer contacto con el mismo. Sin embargo, el buque apagó sus luces de pesca e inició la huida en navegación hacia aguas internacionales, sin responder a los permanentes llamados por distintas frecuencias del servicio móvil marítimo", se lee en el comunicado.

Ante la negativa del buque para ser abordado, se efectuaron disparos intimidatorios, que tampoco lograron detenerlo.

"En distintas oportunidades, el buque infractor realizó maniobras tendientes a colisionar al guardacostas de la Prefectura poniendo en riesgo no sólo la vida de la tripulación del pesquero, sino también la del personal de la institución, por lo que se ordenó disparar a distintos sectores del buque logrando ocasionar averías al mismo", informó el Ministerio de Seguridad de Argentina.

"Es una locura"

En conversación con BBC Mundo, el jefe del Servicio de Buques de Guardacostas argentino, el prefecto Mario Farinon, dio más detalles de lo ocurrido con el barco pesquero chino.

"En 30 años es el primer caso de este tipo. Es de una locura que no entendemos", explicó Farinon.

"Que un barco que se presume infractor a la ley de pesca se tire un buque encima del otro tratando de hundirlo es un comportamiento que no resiste ningún tipo de análisis", añadió.

El marinero relató que la persecución a la embarcación china comenzó a las 22:08 hora local de este domingo cuando pescaba calamares en forma ilegal en zona de exclusión y fue hundido "luego de muchísimas horas de disparos intimidatorios", a las 18 horas de este lunes.

"Advertimos al barco que se iba a comenzar a realizar fuego sobre el casco. Los disparos de armas de fuego -fusiles o ametralladoras de calibres chicos- son hechos al sector de la proa", relató Farinon.

"Y después al de antenas tratando de inutilizar los equipos de comunicación, radar y posicionamiento electrónico para impedir la huida y ellos al parecer ya tenían elaborado lo que iban a hacer", agregó.

Farinon insistió que el comportamiento del capitán de la embarcación identificada como Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 no sólo puso en riesgo la vida de sus tripulantes, sino también la de los marinos que formaban parte de la patrulla argentina.

"Todo indica que tenían comunicaciones porque hay otros buques que los vienen asistir, aparece alguien hablando e inmediatamente se arrojan al agua en dirección a ese barco amigo, a pesar de que les habíamos advertido de no hacerlo", narró.

Al ser consultado sobre las motivaciones que puede tener este comportamiento en el marco de los códigos internacionales de navegación, Farinon dijo que no tenía explicación y que deberá ser materia de la investigación judicial.

Tripulantes

El capitán del barco de bandera china recién detuvo la navegación cuando el buque comenzaba a hundirse y parte de la tripulación abandonó el barco.

El Prefecto Derbes rescató a cuatro tripulantes, incluido el capitán, mientras que el resto abordó otro de los buques que lo escoltaban.

El caso es llevado por el juez federal de la ciudad argentina de Rawson, Hugo Sastre, quien en declaraciones al canal TN precisó que el guardacostas Derbes se dirigía en la tarde de este martes hacia Puerto Madryn.

"Llegarían mañana, miércoles, a media mañana, si las condiciones climáticas así lo permiten, para luego tener yo contacto con ellos (los tripulantes del pesquero de bandera china) y tomarles declaración", señaló el magistrado.

El juez confirmó que el pesquero desoyó las órdenes y puso en "riesgo tanto la vida y bienes del propio buque chino como al personal y al barco de la Prefectura argentina".

La zona exclusiva

No es la primera vez que los guardacostas argentinos advierten a buques pesqueros cuando se acercan demasiado a su zona económica exclusiva.

En aquella región se acostumbra pescar calamares.

El diarioClarín señaló que este es el segundo incidente con barcos chinos en pocas semanas.

A fines de febrero, fuerzas argentinas efectuaron disparos para que otro buque de ese país (identificado como Hua Li 8) que pescaba calamares en forma ilegal a la altura del Golfo San Jorge abandone sus aguas nacionales.

La Prefectura Naval informó que el barco chino Lu Yan Yuan Yu estaba 200 millas dentro de la zona argentina cuando se les dio la orden de apagar los motores.
