Bull Boxer

The Bull Boxer is also known as the Pit Boxer, Bullboxer, American Bull Boxer, Pitoxer, Boxer Pitbull mix,Valley Bulldog and Pitbull Boxer mix. She is a cross between a Bulldog and a Boxer and is a large dog in the breed group of working with talents that include agility, companionship, watching and guarding. She has a life expectancy of 10 to 14 years.

Where does the Bull Boxer come from?

In the last ten to twenty years it has become more popular to create new mixed dog breeds by putting together parents that had not deliberately been bred together before. These are also known as designer or hybrid dogs. Most of the time we do not even know where or when these hybrids were first created. The Bull Boxer does not have a history apart from that of its parents the Bulldog and the Boxer. To understand the Bull Boxer you can look at the history, characteristics and appearance of the parents.

The Bulldog

The Bulldog comes from England sometime in the 1500s where he was used in bull baiting. This was a popular spectator sport back then and they really thought that it tenderized the bull's meat. Eventually when it was outlawed people thought that would be the end of the Bulldog as all he had been bred for in terms of personality and appearance was bull baiting. However some admired this dog and decided to try and breed him to get a more docile temperament. Today he is courageous still but also sweet, dignified but kind and oh so stubborn which means he is harder and slower to train.

The Boxer has German Mastiffs in his heritage (used for hunting large prey) as well as the Bulldog. In the late 19th century the Boxer was first bred by a German called Georg Alt. It became more well known in the rest of Europe in the late 1800s and in the early 20th century he was imported for the first time to the U.S. During World War I the Boxer was a popular dog in the military carrying messages, guarding, attacking and acting a pack carriers. After World War II they became more popular in America. Today he is a dog with an interesting mix of clowning around and being alert and watchful. He is only aggressive when he is defending his home and his people. He can be both dignified and playful and is good with children.

Temperament

The Bull Boxer has a mix of temperaments from both her parents though you cannot always predict how much from each one a puppy will grow into. Often she is fairly clever, enthusiastic and full of energy. She is alert and watchful making her a good watch dog. She is loyal and loving to her family and wants to please her owner. She is usually obedient therefore but does do better with firm training. She can be stubborn and is wary around strangers until she becomes used to you. She can also be playful.

What does a Bull Boxer look like

She is 50 to 80 pounds in weight and measures 22 to 26 inches tall. She is a large dog with a short and straight coat that is smooth to touch. Common colors include cream, brown, black, white, golden and brindle. She is stocky and short with a broad and wide head and ears that are either pointy with a slight droop or rose shaped. She has eyes that a bit beady and she has a chest like the Boxer.

Training and Exercise Needs

How much exercise does she need?

Bull Boxers should be given a lot of opportunities for physical and mental workouts during a day as they are energetic and prone to causing damage from chewing or digging when they do not get out enough. It helps to have owners who also enjoy being physically active so that you can just slot her into your own routine. Take her with you on your walks, jogs, cycling, hiking and so on. Also add in time at a park, play time with you, and time to mess around in the yard if you have one. Make sure she knows you as pack leader are the one who leads when you are out. Let her have a bunch of interactive toys indoors including chew toys.

Can I train her easily?

She has many wonderful qualities but being super easy to train is not one of them, though she is not especially impossible to train either. Results will come gradually with a Bull Boxer, it helps if you know how to communicate with dogs and can establish yourself quickly and firmly as the dominant one. Because she is quite vigorous and full of energy you will need to be strong as pack leader to keep them focused. Training and socialization are super important to undertake with your dog. She will be a better dog not just in behavior but also be happier too. She is fairly clever and likes to please so hopefully that part of her nature will over rule the possibility of stubbornness.

Living with a Bull Boxer

Grooming requirements

She is not super high maintenance like some dogs when it comes to grooming but she will have some basic needs that you need to take care of. She does not shed a lot and brushing will just be needed once a week or so to remove loose hairs and give her a nice healthy look to her coat. Bathing can just happen when she needs it. If you start bathing slowly from a young age and treat it like a training session as an adult it will be a lot easier. Start as a puppy with a small box just getting in and out. Move to the bath but still no water. Add a little at the bottom. Slow steps gradually building up to bath time will make it a lot easier on your dog and make it easier to bathe her when she gets particularly sticky or muddy!

Other grooming needs include her ears, teeth and her nails. Use a cloth once a week to wipe her ears clean and check them for anything unusual. Nails need clipping a few times a year. But dogs have a blood vessel running through the lower part of their nails so do not cut too low, or leave it to a professional groomer to do. Here teeth should be brushed once a day if she lets you, two or three times a week should be enough otherwise.

What she is like with children and other animals

When you have a well trained and socialized dog you can trust them with children and that is the same for the Bull Boxer. She is friendly and loves to play but may need to be supervised around young children and strange children. The young ones is just because she might get too boisterous and strange children just because she is always wary around unknown people. That socialization will also help curb the instinct to view other pets as prey.

Other information

She can adapt to living in an apartment as long as she still gets exercise outside and play inside. She will need 2½ cups to 3 cups of quality dry dog food a day divided into two meals. It is important not to let her graze on food all day and to watch how many treats she gets as she does have a tendency to become obese. She does not do well in extreme weather conditions so avoid getting her if you live where it gets especially hot or cold or bring her indoors on days like that.

Health Concerns

There are no known major health issues just because of being a newer breed. As a mixed breed though she is less prone to health issues than pure breeds. Some things that could come up being inherited from her parents are obesity, allergies, hip dysplasia and eye problems.

Costs involved in owning a Bull Boxer

Puppies can range in price depending on where you are, the kind of breeder you buy from, how in demand that designer dog is and how easy to find they are. At the moment you could expect to pay between $450 and $800 for a Bull Boxer puppy along with other initial costs like bedding, crate, collar, leash, spaying, micro chip, blood tests and so on for a price of $400 - $500. Then there are your yearly costs to consider such as food, toys, treats, training, license, emergency health care savings or insurance, vet check ups. That will be around $1000 to $1200.

The Bull Boxer is a great dog, low maintenance when it comes to grooming needs, able to adapt to an apartment if she has to and good as a companion to one person or as a family dog. She should be given socialization and training as soon as you get her to ensure she is completely safe around strange children, other pets and other dogs though. She is a powerful protector and a loyal friend.

Brandon the 1 3/4 year old Bullboxer Staff (Boxer / Staffie mix) is training to be a therapy dog

Description

The Bullboxer Staff is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Boxer and the American Staffordshire Terrier. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in any of the breeds in the hybrid. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

"Olly Bear is about four years of age. He is fairly mellow, and loves to cuddle and just hang out with his favorite people. He is low-key, does well on the leash and knows his basic commands. Olly Bear is treat-motivated so we can see him learning all sorts of tricks. He is crate-trained and leash-trained. Olly Bear is great around other animals, as long as they don't try to mount him and show dominance. Olly Bear occasionally mounts other dogs, but a quick "get down" or "no" will get him to stop. Right now, he is being fostered with another mini Schnauzer and Poodle. They do wonderfully together. Olly Bear is friendly to people, and allows others to pet him. He often curls up on patio furniture to take a nap while we take him out to adoptions. It's quite a cute scene to watch:). He is a charmer. He has a sensitive personality; he will cower and bow his head down when he senses that a person is upset or angry. Perhaps this arises from his past when he was completely neglected, chained up, and left to die on his own. The Fuzzy Pet Foundation rescued him after he was seized from his original owners by law enforcement officers."

She has very bad puppy breath and flaunts it LOL. She is very proud and loves to play with my two cats. She is very receptive to her training. She is just a joy to have. I look forward to our life together. "

List of Bullboxer Types

The Bull-Boxer types go as far back as the early 1950s or more. Many variations emerged and there was no real standard on just what a Bullboxer really was. When a Boxer was crossed with any other bull breed such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, English Bulldog, American Bulldog and of course the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, it was referred to as the Bullboxer, also spelled Bull-Boxer. In 2009 an attempt was made to distinguish the different variations of the Boxer hybrids and names were given to each. They are as follows:

Boxer x American Pit Bull Terrier = Bullboxer Pit

Boxer x American Staffordshire Terrier = Bullboxer Staff

Boxer x Staffordshire Bull Terrier = Staffy Bull

Boxer x American Bulldog = Bulloxer

The Valley Bulldog is said to originate in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada, giving it its name "Valley Bulldog." Its lines include the Boxer and the English Bulldog and can be traced back to the mid-1900s. They are popular around the Nova Scotia, Canada, area. Some Valley Bulldog lines are breeding pure in both form and type. While other breeders are breeding simple Boxer to Bulldog crosses and calling them Valley Bulldogs. The ACHC and the DDKC hybrid clubs, however, call the Boxer crossed with Bulldog a Bull-Boxer.

Boxer

A well-conditioned Boxer is an awesome sight. A male can stand as high as 25 inches at the shoulder, females a little shorter. Their muscles ripple beneath their short, tight-fitting coat. The dark brown eyes and wrinkled forehead give the face an alert, curious look. Boxers move like the athletes they’re named for: smooth and graceful, but powerful. The coat can be fawn (tan to mahogany-red) or brindle (kind of like tiger stripes), with white markings.

General Appearance

The ideal Boxer is a medium-sized, square-built dog of good substance with short back, strong limbs, and short, tight-fitting coat. His well-developed muscles are clean, hard, and appear smooth under taut skin. His movements denote energy. The gait is firm yet elastic, the stride free and ground-covering, the carriage proud. Developed to serve as guard, working, and companion dog, he combines strength and agility with elegance and style. His expression is alert and his temperament steadfast and tractable.

The chiseled head imparts to the Boxer a unique individual stamp. It must be in correct proportion to the body. The broad, blunt muzzle is the distinctive feature, and great value is placed upon its being of proper form and balance with the skull.

The beauty of the head depends upon the harmonious proportion of muzzle to skull. The blunt muzzle is 1/3 the length of the head from the occiput to the tip of the nose, and 2/3 the width of the skull. The head should be clean, not showing deep wrinkles (wet). Wrinkles typically appear upon the forehead when ears are erect, and are always present from the lower edge of the stop running downward on both sides of the muzzle. Skull - The top of the skull is slightly arched, not rounded, flat, nor noticeably broad, with the occiput not overly pronounced. The forehead shows a slight indentation between the eyes and forms a distinct stop with the topline of the muzzle. The cheeks should be relatively flat and not bulge (cheekiness), maintaining the clean lines of the skull as they taper into the muzzle in a slight, graceful curve.

Neck - Round, of ample length, muscular and clean without excessive hanging skin (dewlap). The neck should have a distinctly arched and elegant nape blending smoothly into the withers.

The back is short, straight, muscular, firm, and smooth. The topline is slightly sloping when the Boxer is at attention, leveling out when in motion. Body - The chest is of fair width, and the forechest well-defined and visible from the side. The brisket is deep, reaching down to the elbows; the depth of the body at the lowest point of the brisket equals half the height of the dog at the withers. The ribs, extending far to the rear, are well-arched but not barrel-shaped. The loins are short and muscular. The lower stomach line is slightly tucked up, blending into a graceful curve to the rear. The croup is slightly sloped, flat and broad. The pelvis is long, and in females especially broad. The tail is set high, docked, and carried upward. An undocked tail should be severely penalized.

Forequarters

The shoulders are long and sloping, close-lying, and not excessively covered with muscle (loaded). The upper arm is long, approaching a right angle to the shoulder blade. The elbows should not press too closely to the chest wall nor stand off visibly from it. The forelegs are long, straight, and firmly muscled, and, when viewed from the front, stand parallel to each other. The pastern is strong and distinct, slightly slanting, but standing almost perpendicular to the ground. The dewclaws may be removed. Feet should be compact, turning neither in nor out, with well-arched toes.

Short, shiny, lying smooth and tight to the body.

Expression, Eyes & Ears

Expression -Intelligent and alert. Eyes - Dark brown in color, frontally placed, generous, not too small, too protruding, or too deep set. Their mood-mirroring character, combined with the wrinkling of the forehead, gives the Boxer head its unique quality of expressiveness. Third eyelids preferably have pigmented rims. Ears - Set at the highest points of the sides of the skull, the ears are customarily cropped, cut rather long and tapering, and raised when alert. If uncropped, the ears should be of moderate size, thin, lying flat and close to the cheeks in repose, but falling forward with a definite crease when alert.

Hindquarters

The hindquarters are strongly muscled, with angulation in balance with that of the forequarters. The thighs are broad and curved, the breech musculature hard and strongly developed. Upper and lower thighs are long. The legs are well-angulated at the stifle, neither too steep nor over-angulated, with clearly defined, well "let down" hock joints. Viewed from behind, the hind legs should be straight, with hock joints leaning neither in nor out. From the side, the leg below the hock (metatarsus) should be almost perpendicular to the ground, with a slight slope to the rear permissible. The metatarsus should be short, clean, and strong. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws.

Nutrition

Good nutrition for Boxers is very important from puppyhood to their senior years.

The Boxer’s short, shiny and smooth-lying coat requires little grooming.

Very Active; Boxers are strong, quick, busy dogs who need plenty of exercise; they enjoy physical & mental challenges

The Look of a Boxer

Boxers have a compact, square-built frame that looks equally elegant and powerful. Their lean, well-developed muscles are usually visible under the tight, unwrinkled skin, and they carry themselves in a proud and balanced manner. They have chiseled heads—in proportion to their bodies—with open nostrils and wide, blunt muzzles. They have strong necks, short backs, docked tails and straight front legs. Their taut, close-fitting coats can come in a variety of colors: beige, tawny brown, and shades of red with white markings.

What They Are Like to Live With

Boxers may look tough as nails (and they are certainly tough) but under the surface they are lovable, playful, sometimes goofy pals. They get along with the whole family, including children and other pets. Some have even been know to get chummy with cats.

Though it’s a myth that Boxers got their name from their tendency to stand up and “box” with their paws, they do use their paws frequently, whether to bat playfully at their water bowls, toys and friends. They sometimes do it for fun, but mostly it’s to send you a message like “feed me” or “play with me!” Boxers also love to carry things around the house. This could be a toy, a shirt, or just about anything.

Loyal and affectionate, Boxers need lots of attention. Playtime, walks and obedience games are always appreciated. They are extremely protective of their surroundings, serving as very dependable guard dogs. However, they are generally friendly—and sometimes giddy—when meeting new people. An excellent companion to kids, they might be too rambunctious with the very young—but they never lose their patience or good nature.

Things You Should Know

Boxers sometimes try to dominate their owners. The best way to handle this is to maintain a firm but friendly hand. If acquired as a puppy, make sure your Boxer gets adequate training and socialization to manage the extreme aspects of his energetic personality. An untrained Boxer—using its speed, energy and jumping skills at will—can be a handful.

Boxers are sensitive to heat and cold. Their short snouts make it hard for them to cool themselves down in humid weather, and their coats are not thick enough for the cold. If you live in an extreme temperature area, either consider another breed or closely monitor your Boxer when playing outside.

A healthy Boxer can live as long as 14 years. Common health problems include tumors (especially in older Boxers), skin allergies, hip dysplasia and heart problems. They also tend to drool and snore. Like most energetic canines, they need loads of exercise, activity and human contact to maintain good health and happiness.

Boxer History

Developed in 19th century Germany from German Mastiffs and English Bulldogs, the Boxer was used as a hunting, fighting and working dog, prized for its tenacity, strength and obedience. Later used as cattle dogs, they also made a name for themselves as circus performers. In the early 1900s, the Deutscher Boxer Club established a breed standard for Boxers, and the AKC approved them in 1904. Decades later, American soldiers brought them home after World War II, and they quickly became popular in the U.S.

    Designer Dogs (hybrid dog breeds)

Designer Dog is a cross between two purebred dogs. Example: Labradoodle = Labrador X Poodle.

The percentage of hybrid designer dogs with genetic problems is much lower than purebred dogs because the gene pool is mixed. Also, most designer dogs are bred to be clean and dander free. These are suitable in families looking for dogs that don’t shed.

    Types of Designer Dogs

F1 Designer Dog = First generation puppy—50% purebred-A and 50% purebred-B. For example, a Golden Retriever to Poodle cross is first generation, resulting in healthier offspring. In this particular Goldendoodle cross, hair type can be smooth like a Golden, wiry like an Irish wolfhound or wavy/shaggy, they can shed or not shed and pups in the same litter can vary. This is not the best cross for people with severe allergies.

F1b Designer Dog = Backcross puppy—25% purebred-A and 75% purebred-B. For example, an F1 Goldendoodle and Poodle cross; this is a Goldendoodle bred back to Poodle— the wavy, curly, shaggy-look doodle (poodle cross) is very consistent in coat types. F1b is the MOST likely of any doodle to be non-shedding and allergy-friendly, and is the easiest coat to take care of.

F2 Designer Dog = Second-generation puppy—F1 hybrid crossed with an F1 hybrid. For example, an F1 Goldendoodle crossed with an F1 Goldendoodle. In this combination you get the same percentage of purebred-A as purebred-B as you would in an F1 hybrid. In the case of the Goldendoodle, they are more likely to shed.

    F2b Designer Dog = Second-generation backcross puppy—F1 bred to a F1b (hybrid backcross)

    F3 Designer Dog = F2 hybrid to F2 hybrid

    Multi-generation Designer Dog = F3 or higher-generation hybrid crossed with F3 or higher-generation hybrid

    Purebred-A x Purebred-B = F1 Hybrid Dog

    F1 x Purebred-A = F1b Hybrid Dog

    F1 x F1 = F2 Hybrid Dog

    F1 x F1b = F2b Hybrid Dog

    F2 x F2 = F3 Hybrid Dog

    Miniature Boxer Puppies

Love the look of a Boxer, but find a dog of that size a bit too much to handle? A mini Boxer looks just like a regular Boxer but is much smaller and is a good option if you don't mind that your dog is not purebred.

    What Are Miniature Boxers?

In truth, Miniature Boxers are not actual downsized versions of purebred Boxer dogs. They are simply another designer breed at this time, and there are a number of breed combinations that can produce a Boxer-type canine that is significantly smaller than a true Boxer.

    • Purebred Boxer x Boston Terrier
    • Pug dog x Boston Terrier
    • Pug dog x Rat Terrier
    • Pug dog x Fox Terrier

The resulting puppies from these combinations aren't exactly uniform in size, but they are generally smaller than their purebred namesake and have a basic Boxer look.

    Finding Miniature Boxer Puppies

The following breeders are listed only as examples of what you may find, and LoveToKnow does not endorse any breeder or kennel. Before you decide to do business, take the time to fully investigate the breeder to make sure you'll receive exactly what you're paying for.

LSC Ranch breeds their dogs from Mini Boxer and Boston Terrier studs bred to Mini Boxer and Boxer bitches. You can see photos of their breeding stock at their website. They also offer payment plans for anyone who wishes to purchase a puppy.

    Temperament

In general, Mini Boxers have an outgoing temperament, and they make good family pets. However, they aren't exactly like traditional Boxer temperaments since these dogs aren't purebred. If you want a puppy that has the most chance of inheriting the Boxer's bouyant personality, try to find one from a Boxer and Boston Terrier cross.

Pups produced from the various Pug and Terrier crosses are also good natured as a rule, but it can be difficult to predict which combination of the parent breeds' temperaments a given pup will inherit.

    Terrier characteristics include:

    • High energy
    • Strong willed
    • Playful
    • Intelligent

    Pug characteristics include:

    • Friendly
    • Good with children
    • Easy going

    Health Issues

Since these dogs have only been bred for a few years, there has been no study as to whether there are any specific health issues being produced from these crosses. In order to get a better idea of which health problems a puppy might face, you must research the parent breeds involved, and take a look at health issues that are common to them.

    • Boxers can be prone to cardiomyopathy, bloat, hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism, among other possible health threats.
    • Pugs can be prone to obesity, breathing problems, eye problems and skin problems.
    • Boston Terriers are prone to eye problems, heart problems, epilepsy, and skin problems.
    • Fox Terriers can be prone to Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, patellar luxation, congenital hypothyroidism with goiter, and primary lens luxation, among other health issues.
    • Rat Terriers can be prone to allergies, dental problems and patellar luxation.

Keep in mind that a particular pup might never face one of these health issues, but the possibility could be there in the gene pool so it's good to be aware.

The Miniature Boxer is not a recognized breed at this time, but it may become one as some point in the future. If you'd like to register your pet with a dog club, the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Certified Pet Registry take registrations for various crosses that produce this type of dog.

    Spend Time with These Dogs

Before you bring one of these pups home, spend some time at several breeder's kennels so you can get to know the dogs in person. This is the surest way to find out if a Miniature Boxer will fit your life style, as well as which particular cross you prefer. Getting a puppy is a lifetime commitment, so be sure about your choice.
