Description
The American Staffordshire Terrier (Am Staff) is extremely strong for its size. Agile, very muscular and stocky with a broad, powerful head. The muzzle is medium in length and rounded on the upper side to fall away abruptly below the eyes. The eyes are dark and round, low down in the skull and set far apart. Pink eyelids are considered a fault according to the AKC standard. The jaw is very strong. The lips are to be close and even, no looseness or dewlap. The ears are set high on the head and can be cropped or uncropped. Uncropped is preferred and should be short and held rose or half prick. The teeth should form a scissors bite. Its coat is made up of thick, stiff, glossy hair. All colors, solid, parti, or patched are permissible, but according to AKC standard it is not encouraged for dogs to be more than 80% white. The un-docked tail is short compared to the dog’s size and tapers to a point. Classed by AKC as "American Staffordshire Terrier" and by UKC as "American Pit Bull Terrier," the American Staffordshire Terrier is generally of larger bone structure, head size and weight then its cousin the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Temperament
The American Staffordshire Terrier is an intelligent, happy, outgoing, stable, and confident dog. Gentle and loving toward people, it is a good-natured, amusing, extremely loyal and affectionate family pet. It is good with children and adults. Almost always obedient, this dog wants nothing more than to please its master. It is an extremely courageous and intelligent guard dog that is very full of life. Over the past 50 years, careful breeding has produced this friendly, trustworthy, dog that is an especially good dog for children. Courageous and a persistent fighter if provoked. Highly protective of his owners and the owner's property, it will fight an enemy to the death if the enemy traps the dog in a corner and threatens its loved ones. This breed has a very high tolerance for pain. Some un-socialized Staffs may be dog aggressive. Socialize very thoroughly when young to curb any dog aggressive tendencies. This breed can be difficult to housebreak. It has given outstanding results as a guardian of property, but is at the same time esteemed as a companion dog. When properly trained and socialized, the Staff makes a great family companion. This breed is not for the passive owner who does not understand that all dogs have an instinct to have a pack order. They need a firm, confident, consistent owner who understands how to display proper leadership. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader; lines are clearly defined. You and all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. That is the only way your relationship can be a success.
Height, Weight
Height: Males 17 - 19 inches (43 – 48 cm) Females 16 - 18 inches (41 – 46 cm)
Weight: 57 - 67 pounds (25 - 30 kg)
Health Problems
Some are prone to heart murmurs, thyroid problems, skin allergies, tumors, hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts and congenital heart disease. Also Ataxia, which is a very serious health problem in the breed. There is a genetic test for ataxia through a company called Optigen. If you are looking for an AmStaff it is wise to ask any breeder if their puppies are guaranteed free of ataxia or not. Its a recessive trait, so if 1 parent is tested Ataxia clear then they can safely know that the puppy won't be affected by the disease.
Living Conditions
Staffordshire Terriers will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are very active indoors and will do alright without a yard. This breed prefers warm climates.
Daily exercise is paramount. Without it the American Staffordshire Terrier will become hard to handle. They need to be taken on long daily walks/jogs or runs. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Teach them to enter and exit door and gateways after the humans.
Life Expectancy
About 9-15 years
Litter Size
Average of 5 - 10 puppies
The smooth, shorthaired coat is easy to groom. Brush on a regular basis with a firm bristle brush, and bathe or dry shampoo as necessary. A rub with a piece of toweling or chamois will make the coat gleam. This breed is an average shedder.
In the nineteenth century in the English region of Staffordshire, crossing among the Bulldog and various terriers developed the muscular, active, combative Staffordshire Bullterrier. Brought to the United States, the breed was preferred by American breeders who increased its weight and gave it a more powerful head. Now recognized as a separate breed, the American Staffordshire is larger and heavier than his British cousin, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. After dog fighting was banned in the United States in 1900, two strains of these dogs were developed, a show strain and a non-show strain. The show strain was labeled the American Staffordshire, while the non-show dog strain was labeled the American Pit Bull Terrier. The two are now being recognized as separate breeds. Today the American Pit Bull Terrier is being bred with the same gentle qualities as the American Staffordshire Terrier. They both make great pets with the right kind of owner. The American Staffordshire Terrier was recognized by the AKC in 1936. Some of the American Staffordshire Terrier’s talents are watchdog, guarding, police work, weight pulling and agility.

Brynx the American Staffordshire Terrier at 13 years old—"When I set out to get my first dog I wanted to stay away from the stereotypical pit bull breeds, not that I have anything against them, it just seemed everyone was wanting them. After a couple of months of research the Amstaff was the dog for me. Shortly after I found my pup. I named him Brynx, my own take on home security and oh boy did I get more then I bargained for. Full of energy and a mouth that won't quit. Brynx has been through thick and thin with me and is still by my side. He is a stubborn old man now but shows little signs of slowing down. Since I have gotten him I have married and have had a child of my own and he has never wavered in his loyalty to me. By far one of the best breeds I have had the pleasure of calling MY best friend."

Gracious the American Staffordshire Terrier puppy at 3 months old-"Gracious is so cute. He has champion bloodlines and champion potential."

CH Mt. Brier's Eye Of The Storm, TT, OFA, Ataxia Clear American Staffordshire Terrier—"Two-Tone was one of our first bred by AKC Champions from our very first litter. She is an exceptional example of the AmStaff breed - she had brains, beauty, and brawn. She passed her ATTS temperament test (TT) title with flying colors, and all of the proper health testing for the breed, along with easily becoming an AKC conformation champion. Absolutely adored children and had the most stable temperament and rock-solid nerves. She was born in 2002 and has gone over the rainbow bridge sadly, but she will never be forgotten." CH Mt. Brier's Sweet Pandemonium, TT, PennHIP, OFA, American Staffordshire Terrier—"Pandora is another lovely example of the AmStaff breed, she excelled in everything from obedience, to agility, therapy work and even conformation (took a Best of Breed win in AKC over top 10 ranked Champions). She even passed her ATTS temperament test proving her stable temperament. She is a bundle of energy, loves children and adults, like any AmStaff should". Photo courtesy of MBF AmStaffs.

"Cash is a 1-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier. He comes to work with me every day and loves to go around and greet everyone when he arrives. His favorite playmate is a little 7-lb. Shih-Tzu. Since AmStaffs are such a strong breed I follow the Dog Whisperer's methods and work hard every day to make sure I am a good pack leader."

"Rodeo changed my life. He was the best ambassador for the breed I'd ever met, living with rescue dogs and staying in a pack of all breeds from Chihuahuas and Yorkies to Great Danes and Pit Bulls. If it wasn't for Cesar Millan’s techniques I know he easily could have been a disaster. My family couldn't believe my mom would let me own this breed, until they all met him on Thanksgiving and while all the other Labradors ran around begging and causing havoc my Rodeo was in a down/stay the whole time. He loved cats and people, but mostly kids. It amazed me the first time a child took his leash; he was calm, gentle and so attentive to what she wanted. The little girl even dragged him up a ladder at a playground and pushed him down the slide. He loved to ham it up and dress up since he went truly everywhere with me. Everyone loved Rodeo and he will always be missed and never replaced, but I will only own bully breeds now. They are truly the family dog if you are the pack leader."

"This is my American Staffordshire Terrier named Fedor. He was the runt of the litter, but is now 1 year old and very healthy. He is white with brown spots (not breed standard but still very handsome) and is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. All he wants to do is play (with anything or anyone). We actually have a hamster as well and we sometimes leave the cage door open (supervised) and they just stay there sniffing and licking each other; I am convinced that Fedor doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. You can dress him up in the craziest outfits and he doesn't mind. as long as he is with me or in the presence of other people he is happy and content (such a social butterfly)."
"Fedor also loves walks. We take him on at least one sometimes two walks a day for about 20-50 min. weather permitting. This is the most important thing for this breed. or any "power breed. ” We find that it really mellows him out and it makes both me and Fedor happy to get outside and gives us some bonding time together. He was a bit of a puller at first and we tried some of the techniques we learned from obedience to no avail. I have always watched Cesar Millan on National Geographic and with Fedor’s pulling getting stronger I decided to go out and buy the first season on DVD, so I can try and brush up on my handling skills. One of the episodes had a "puller" on it and Cesar suggested moving the collar up toward the jaw so you have more control over the head and what do you know. IT WORKED. for the owner on the show, as well as for me when I took him for a walk that day (too eager to try it out). Along with being a calm assertive leader I/we can now enjoy our walks together much more without me being worried of him dragging me behind him."
"So far Fedor has graduated at the top of two puppy socialization classes and obedience classes and we occasionally take him to a rehab center for injured patients and he does marvelously with them, the older patients LOVE him and his smile and it often makes there day and takes their minds off of why they are really there. It is so important that people understand this breed with all of the BSL laws going on in certain areas. I have had other breeds of dogs (Chihuahua, Lab / Spaniel mix) and Fedor is by far the most affectionate, loving, and loyal dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and it's like with any dog, you treat and train them right and they can become a GREAT addition to a family."

"This is Mis as in Mischief. She is a 3-year-old brindle Staffy and was dropped into my lap at 10 weeks old by the neighbour [young surfer] who couldn't handle her. Lucky for me and Mis, Cesar Milan had a TV program. He is my hero. Mis loves her everyday walks and runs on the beach and is loving and friendly to all. When some dogs snap and growl at her, she trots up to them and gives them a big kiss. Another trait that cracks everyone up is her snorting and very, very loud snoring."

Få tricket her til, hvordan du fjerner dem.
Sørg derfor for at børste pelsen regelmæssigt.

Fanciful Figurines
By Dennis Gaffney
Staffordshire potters make a wide variety of figures.
Staffordshire pottery often depicts animals.
Inconspicuous damage to pottery has little effect on price.
Original Staffordshire potters didn't use the blue glaze found on this cat.
This little sheep inkwell is worth about $100.
One of the most common types of Victorian pottery seen on ANTIQUES ROADSHOW is the Staffordshire figurine, made in the English county of the same name for over 200 years. "Of all the Victorian pottery, it's one of the most available," says David Lackey, of David Lackey Antiques and Art in Houston, Texas. "And they're easy to collect." Medium-sized pieces in good condition often sell for less than $600, he notes.
More on Staffordshire figurines, one of the more common types of Victorian pottery
250 Years of History
During the late 18th century, potters created figurines with fine detail and rich colors. However, the figures that most people collect today were manufactured in factories during the Victorian period of the mid- and late 19th century.
The laborers in these pottery factories, coming from the England's working class, often worked for six days a week and 12 hours a day. The skilled pottery painters of the day, by and large men, worked on higher-end pottery and porcelain. Unskilled women and children painted the Staffordshire figurines. "These were painted quickly and freely," David notes. "They have an almost folk-art feel that gives them a certain charm."
Staffordshire figurines were made inexpensively and sold at reasonable prices to middle class buyers. "You never would have found one of these in the home of royalty," says David, noting that people began collecting Staffordshire figurines in the 20th century.
Staffordshire figurine factories have manufactured pieces depicting animals, politicians, and even buildings, but all are not equally prized by collectors. David says that famous people are often the most valuable, whether they are royalty, politicians, actors, or even sports figures. However, in cases where there are numerous copies of one person, such as Queen Victoria, the value drops markedly. Cats and rabbits, as well as exotic animals such as elephants, zebras and tigers are usually more valuable than Staffordshire dogs because they are harder to find, David notes.
Quality Matters Too
The sharper a piece's molding and detailing, the more valuable it is. Collectors also pursue pieces with rich, dark colors. "A Staffordshire man with bright green pants, a bright blue jacket and a rich black hat is the type of piece that's worth more," says David. "The same piece that is brightly colored is worth two or three times more than one that isn't."
Condition Is Not So Important
"Damages and manufacturing flaws are much more acceptable on Staffordshire figures than in most other areas of collecting," David says. "Very minor chips, cracks and manufacturing flaws don't effect the price very much."
David says that flaws only matter when they become visually distracting. "If a woman's nose is broken off it will have more effect on the selling price than if the same chip is on her back," David explains, noting that people who usually buy the figures care most about their appearance. Staffordshire figurines often have damage because they are made with low-fired pottery, making them less durable.
20th Century Reproductions
Manufacturers have made Staffordshire reproductions throughout the 20th century and they are still being made today. Pre-World War II pieces are very decorative and are usually of higher quality than the ones made in the latter half of the 20th century.
One way to distinguish old pieces is by their lack of marks. David notes that if you see deep gouges or scrapes on the bottom of a piece, it probably means some marks were scraped off to make them seem older. "It's usually very obvious and it should raise a huge red flag," David notes. Also, look to see if the gold trim is worn, which is often the case in older pieces. New pieces often are painted with a bright and brassy gold as well as other more garish colors.
Many forgers try to make Staffordshire figurines that look older than they really are. "One of the most confusing things is the dirt," says David. "They put fake dirt on these. It's sprayed over a piece like a brown film to look like old smoke. Sometimes they rub the dirt into the cracks and into the glaze. They even rub bits into the unglazed portion on the bottom of a piece."
Colors can also be a give-away. "You'd never see this blue on a real Staffordshire figure," says David, pointing to the modern-day cat shown here. "These transfer-decorated roses are very suspicious as well." The best way to become familiar with authentic Staffordshire figurines is to look at them—and handle them—with a dealer or collector you trust.
"The older ones tend to be much heavier than the new ones," David notes. Still, detecting new from old can be difficult. "The old ones were made by hundreds of different factories and they all had different ways of painting and molding their pieces, so there's no one rule for assessing them. You have to look at all the features to make a decision about a piece's authenticity."
While there are exceptions, most Staffordshire figures sell for under $1,000. All other things being equal, larger pieces usually sell for more than smaller ones. Some of the largest, in good condition, usually go for $500-$1,000, with medium-sized pieces going for between $300-$600. Small ones, such as the sheep inkwell shown here, start at about $100. For the reproductions made after the late 19th century, David says you should pay whatever you are comfortable paying for purely decorative pieces.

Hound Group
Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Beyond this, however, generalizations about hounds are hard to come by, since the Group encompasses quite a diverse lot. There are Pharaoh Hounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Afghans and Beagles, among others. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying. You'd best sample this sound before you decide to get a hound of your own to be sure it's your cup of tea.

Description
The Bull Terrier is a strongly built, muscular dog. The body is well rounded with a short, strong back. The head is long and strong, oval-looking in shape, almost flat at the top, sloping evenly down to the nose with no stop. The nose is black. The eyes are almond-shaped, small and deep-set, dark in color. The ears are small, thin and close together. The long neck is very muscular, with robust shoulders. The tail is set low and on the short side, carried horizontally. The coat is dense, short, flat and harsh to the touch. The AKC recognizes two color varieties, the White Bull Terrier and the Colored Bull Terrier. The White Bull Terrier is allowed to have colored markings on the head, but nowhere else on the body. The Colored Bull Terriers may be black, brindle, black-brindle, red, fawn and tricolor with white markings.
Temperament
Though this breed was once a fierce gladiator, he is much gentler now. A Bull Terrier might have a preventive effect and it might defend its owner in a truly critical situation, but it isn't bred to be a guard dog. Courageous, scrappy, fun-loving, active, clownish and fearless, the Bull Terrier is a loyal, polite, and obedient dog. They become very attached to their owners. The Bull Terrier thrives on firm, consistent leadership and affection and makes a fine family pet. Bull Terriers like to be doing something and fit in well with active families where they receive a great deal of companionship and supervision. They do not do well in situations where they are left alone for 8 hours a day. With the right type of owner this breed is a joy to own, but not recommended for most households. Fond of both grownups and children, but if they do not get enough physical and mental exercise they may be too energetic for small children. Children should be taught how to display leadership toward the dog. Meek owners will find them to become very protective, willful, possessive and/or jealous. Bull Terriers may try to join into family roughhousing or quarrel. They need very firm training and lots of exercise. Bull Terriers must be given a lot of structure, or they may become destructive. Be sure to socialize them well and remain their pack leader 100% of the time, otherwise, they can be extremely aggressive with other dogs. Unaltered males may not get along with other male dogs. They are not recommended with other non-canine pets such as rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs. They make excellent watch dogs. This breed can be somewhat difficult to train.
Height, Weight
Height: 20 - 24 inches (51 - 61 cm) Weight: 45 - 80 pounds (20 - 36 kg)
Height: 10 - 14 inches (25 - 33 cm) Weight: up to 24 - 33 pounds (11 - 15 kg)
Health Problems
Prone to slipped patella (dislocation of the kneecaps), heart defects, kidney failure and skin and flea allergies. Prone to suffer from a zinc deficiency, which can cause death. Gains weight easily. Do not overfeed. White Bull Terriers are prone to deafness.
Living Conditions
Bull Terriers will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are fairly active indoors and a small yard will do. They prefer warm climates.
This breed needs vigorous daily exercise, which includes a daily, long walk. The Bull Terrier has a tendency to become overweight and lazy if it is not properly exercised.
Life Expectancy
About 10-12 years
Litter Size
As little as 1 puppy and as many as 9, average 5
The Bull Terrier is easy to groom. An occasional combing and brushing will do. This breed is an average shedder, shedding twice a year. You can remove loose hair by a daily rubdown with a special rubber glove.
In the early 1800s Bulldogs crossed with terriers were popular. By 1830 combat between Bulldogs and bulls were at the height of their popularity. Lovers of this so-called "sport" decided to create a dog that would attack even more agilely. They crossed the Bulldog with the Old English Terrier, adding in some Spanish Pointer blood; the result was the Bull Terrier breed. They soon found that the Bull Terriers were not the most successful fighters. In 1860 the white-coated variety, which was nicknamed the "White Cavalier" was bred by English dog dealer James Hinks and soon became a fashionable pet for nobles. The colored variety of Bull Terriers was created by back-crossing them with brindle Staffordshires. The breed has been used as a guard, ratter, herder and watchdog. The Miniature was developed to have the same qualities as the Standard Bull Terrier but with a more manageable size. The Standard Bull Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1885 and the Miniature Bull Terrier in 1991. While the AKC sees the Standard Bull Terrier and the Miniature Bull Terrier as separate breeds, the standard requirements are the same except for size. Most other clubs see them as different varieties of the same breed or the same breed without placing a variety label. For example, the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) has both breeds listed under Bull Terrier, separating them by a Standard and Miniature variety. The UKC (United Kennel Club) does not place any height or weight restrictions but does require the dog to be in proportion. The Bull Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1948.

Winston the Miniature English Bull Terrier shown here as a puppy—"Winston is a fabulous, scrappy little comedian, full of love and silliness! He loves children and other dogs and plays daily with our neighbourhood dogs which range from Yorkie Terriers to Great Danes and everything in between. I was very careful with Winston when it came to training and socializing him from day 1, as his breed is often said to be dog aggressive and untrainable. He is stubborn without a doubt and it takes more than a milkbone to get his attention but with Cesar Milan's methods of training, I think he's turned out great! I was very careful when researching breeders and he came all the way from Poland! He travelled 12 hours in total and the second I opened his crate door, he trotted out with the most amazing confidence I've ever seen in a dog, gave me a quick sniff and kiss and he's been a loving and happy little member of our family since! He will go through fazes where he tries to challenge me as his leader but they're always dealt with swiftly and efficiently and he quickly falls back into his proper place in our family pack! I couldn't imagine my life without him now!"

"Spuds is an English Bull Terrier. His coloring is called solid red smut, which is not seen very often. He just turned one year old this week! We were very careful in raising him to be dog-friendly and very accepting of strangers, as those are some negative characteristics of this breed that can become problems if you do not socialize them early. He was born with a moderate heart murmur, and we will always have to keep that monitored. This is a common health problem in the breed, and everyone should be very careful to only purchase puppies from responsible breeders who health-test their adults to avoid this problem."
