Shih tzu
MENTALITET
Nogle ejere vælger at klippe pelsen kortere.

- Lion Dog
Pronunciation
Americans commonly pronounce the Shih Tzu as SHEET-zoo; however, the actual original Chinese translation is, "sure-ds."
In the Chinese pronunciation the "ds" is pronounced the same as the "ds" at the end of the word "words." It is Chinese Mandarin, and translates directly to "lion." That is where the term "lion dog" comes from. The moniker "chrysanthemum dog" and "sheet-sue" are common in America, but are both inaccurate American renditions of the original Chinese.

Description
The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy dog with a body that is slightly longer than it is tall. The head is round and broad, and wide between the eyes. The square muzzle is short, with an inch or less from the tip of the nose to the defined stop. The nose is broad, with well-open nostrils. Nose, lips and eye rims are liver on liver colored dogs, blue on blue dogs and black on all other colors. The teeth meet in a level or under bite. The large, round eyes are dark in color, but lighter on blue and liver dogs. The large, pendant, low-set ears hang down and are covered in abundant hair. The back is level. The muscular legs are straight and well-boned. The high-set tail is carried over the back and is covered in abundant hair. Dewclaws are sometimes removed. The double coat is dense and long, flowing down over the dog. The hair above the eyes is often tied in a topknot. There is a profuse beard and mustache and the hair on the muzzle is short. Coat comes in all colors.
Temperament
The Shih Tzu is an alert, lively, little dog. It is happy and hardy, and packed with character. The gentle, loyal Shih Tzu makes friends easily and responds well to consistent, patient training. It makes a very alert watchdog. It is courageous and clever. Playful and spunky, this affectionate little dog likes to be with people and is generally good with other pets. Some can be difficult to housebreak. The Shih Tzu needs all of the humans in the house to be pack leaders, with the rules of the house made consistently clear. Owners who allow their dogs to take over may find them to be snappish if they are surprised or peeved. Because of this dog’s small size and its adorable face, it commonly develops Small Dog Syndrome, human induced behaviors where the dog believes he is the boss of humans. This causes a varying degree of behavioral issues, such as, but not limited to separation anxiety, guarding, growling, snapping, and even biting. These dogs may become untrustworthy with children and sometimes adults, as they try and tell the humans what THEY want THEM to do. They will be obstinate as they take their stand and defend their top position in the pack. They may bark obsessively as they try and TELL you what they want. These behaviors are NOT Shih Tzu traits, but rather behaviors brought on by the way they are treated by people around them. Give this dog rules and limits as to what it is and is not allowed to do. Be its firm, stable, consistent pack leader. Take it for daily pack walks to burn mental and physical energy. Its temperament will improve for the better, and you will bring out the sweet, trustworthy dog in it.
Height, Weight
Height: Up to 11 inches (28 cm)
Weight: 9 - 16 pounds (4 - 7 kg)
Under 9 pounds is often unofficially called an Imperial Shih Tzu or Tiny Teacup Shih Tzu.
Health Problems
Prone to slipped stifle and spinal disc disease caused by a long back and short legs. Also ear infections, eye problems such as cherry eye and early tooth loss. Tends to wheeze and snore and can have respiratory problems. These dogs gain weight easily and should not be overfed.
Living Conditions
The Shih Tzu is good for apartment life. These dogs are fairly active indoors and will do okay without a yard. This breed is sensitive to the heat.
The Shih Tzu needs a daily walk. Play will take care of a lot of its exercise needs, however, as with all breeds, play will not fulfill its primal instinct to walk. Dogs that do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems. They will also enjoy a good romp in a safe, open area off lead, such as a large, fenced-in yard. Do not overfeed this breed or it will quickly become fat.
Life Expectancy
About 15 years or more
Litter Size
About 2 to 6 puppies
These little dogs require a good daily grooming using a bristle brush. When kept in a long coat a topknot is usually tied to keep the hair out of the dog's eyes. Some owners prefer to have them trimmed to make the coat easier and less time-consuming to care for. Keep the ear passages and area around the eyes clean. Shih Tzus have sensitive eyes that need to be kept clean. There are special drops you can buy to put in them if needed. Ask your vet what to use on your dog. This breed sheds little to no hair and is good for allergy sufferers if its coat is kept very well groomed, due to the fact that they shed little skin dander.
Sixteenth century documents and paintings show dogs resembling the Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu is said to have descended from crossing the Lhasa Apso or Tibetan mountain dog and Pekingese, in the city of Peking in the 17th century. The dogs were favorites of the Chinese royals and were so prized that for years the Chinese refused to sell, trade, or give away any of the dogs. It was not until the 1930s that the first pair was imported to England, when it was discovered by English soldiers during World War II. The Shih Tzu was recognized in Britain in 1946. The AKC recognized the breed in 1969. The name "Imperial Shih Tzu" or "Tiny Teacup Shih Tzu" is often used to describe a smaller sized Shih Tzu, bred smaller than the written standard.

Shih Tzus, Troy & Tia at 12 and 11 years old—"Troy (Beige) and Tia (Black) have been with me since they were 8 weeks old each. Troy is the leader, total alpha. However, when other dogs are in the mix, Tia is definitely a bully. :) They love people. Troy is more vocal about seeking attention but Tia sneaks into your heart quietly."

"Shih Tzu brother and sister Tian Mi's Over The Top aka John J and AM CH Tian Mi's Isadorable aka Izzy. John J and Izzy are typical Shih Tzus who do not meet a stranger. They enjoy dog shows or just being couch potatoes."

Fred (black/white) and Red (red/white) the Shih Tzus at 5 years old—"Fred and Red are brothers (I'm convinced they are twins) never been apart. They are virtually joined at the hip. Friendly, mischievous, and always raring to go. They are like pups and love to show off when on the lead in true show dog fashion trotting along in perfect unison. I keep their coat long and could never imagine them clipped! I am constantly asked the question how long does it take to groom them? I'm not exaggerating when I say, 'I spend more time on their hair than I do mine. '"

"This is my little Shih Tzu. Her name is Foo, which means Lion Dog of Tibet. I chose her name because it is related to her breed. She is only 1 year old in this picture. She barely barks and most of the time loves to play. I'm going to prepare her for dog shows, since she has a long beautiful coat and a pure female face."

Rachel the Shih Tzu at 6 months old—"This is my personal photo of Rachel. She is 6 months old in the photo. Everything stated about the Shih-Tzu temperament from dogbreedinfo.com has posed true for her too. Rachel is a "mighty guard dog" of our 2 bedroom loft apartment in Downtown Cleveland. Our apartment is 1400 square feet and she does get plenty of exercise with the open floor plan; however, a daily walk is needed. of course unless it's raining or too cold (as she can be stubborn if the weather is not ideal). I chose the name Rachel because of her sophistication. She is now a very much "well balanced" Shih-Tzu. although as I have learned from puppy kindergarten and Caesar the Dog Whisperer a dog/puppy needs to know whom is the owner and pack leader (even if it is only the 2 of us). Our 3rd and 4th month together wasn't very easy. She was a noisy roommate who wouldn't pick up after herself. A pee-pee pad and the word "no" paired with "good girl" was a good stepping stone for Rachel and I."

Sparty and Bella the Shih Tzus—Shih Tzus are a curious breed. Watch this video of Sparty and Bella, as Bella can't stop watching herself on the Internet. Are you looking for a great watchdog? Sparty and Bella love to watch people walk by the house. Stopping an intruder, though, well that isn't their specialty.

"This is my Shih Tzu, Bisou. I adopted her when she was 4 1/2 and now she is 9 1/2. We live in Manhattan Beach, CA. She had some issues when I first got her. being agressive towards other dogs, and even growling or snapping at me sometimes. but with a lot of love and also some training (more for me than her), she is a much happier dog now and better behaved. and knows how much she is loved. I do watch 'The Dog Whisperer' (in fact I took a break from watching it to write to you) and I've gotten a lot of good tips from Cesar that have really worked.
"Bisou is very loyal, energetic, and has a very good heart. She's also quite amusing. She's like her mom (me!) in that she loves eating vegetables (I make salads a lot) and she also loves popcorn and doggie ice cream (Frosty Paws). She loves going for walks especially by the beach where we live. She has a beautiful, thick tan and white coat which is a little wavy. She loves to lie on her back rubbing herself on the carpet like she's giving herself a massage. My niece calls it "the Bis Bis dance"!
"My life has been made better because of her."

"Mei Lee is truly one of a kind. Without much training on my part she has become one of the most obedient creatures I know. She is leash trained but I never hesitate to walk her without a leash because she never leaves my side. Sometimes I forget that she is only a dog, but she means much more to me than that. She is like a child to me. She has such a great little personality, although she isn't the most active little dog. She prefers to sit on the couch and watch TV on our relaxing evenings together. Her favorite shows are The Dog Whisperer and America's Funniest Home Videos. Her favorite foods include carrots, apples, bananas and tangerines; she has no problem sitting on me until I give her a slice. Lastly, her favorite activity is walking and hiking. Although she is a Shih Tzu, she is a great mountain dog because she has no problem with getting a little dirty, and when we can't get to mountains she loves to take a cool relaxing dip in my parents’ pool during the hot days of summer."

This is Íseldar Al-eks (Alex) from Iceland.

"Buster, my Shih Tzu at 1 year old. I took this photo right before we went on a walk. He is an extremely loving dog. He loves to lick us. He can lick for 15 minutes straight. He loves it. His temperament is great. His only bad habit is that he likes to play with his poop, which I've read is a common issue with Shih Tzus. He loves going for walks daily. Whenever I take out his sweater, he gets all excited and ready to go."

"Muffin is a tiny Shih Tzu (others call it an imperial or princess type; however, I am aware that this is not a separate breed of Shih Tzu). We bought this kind of Shih Tzu because my boyfriend and I could not afford the standard one. She is the smallest of the litter and I give her extra care. She is healthy, playful and loyal just like other Shih Tzus. The only problem I have with her is that she bites too hard when playing, but I am currently training her. She's like my shadow; keeps on following me from room to room. She barks at her own reflection in the mirror. She's really playful. Even when I'm lying in bed, using my iPad, she just sits by my side and stares at me, then suddenly jumps on my face. She becomes excited whenever I'm holding her doggy bowl with dog food in it and whenever I'm giving her vitamins, she keeps on jumping. I just hope that people would stop insulting "teacup" Shih Tzus. We are aware that this is not a separate breed. I didn't buy a Shih Tzu for dog shows; I bought one because I want a companion. Even though this tiny Shih Tzu, Muffin, is rejected by the Kennel Club, she still deserves the same amount of love and affection :) PS - the breeder does not intentionally breed "imperial" Shih Tzus. She is just the smallest of the litter and all her siblings are the standard ones. Muffin was the last one. I bought her for a cheaper price, about half the price of the standard one."

Muffin the purebred Shih Tzu was the runt of her litter and smaller than her other littermates, but she is perfectly healthy.

Shih Tzu
His name means little lion, but there’s nothing fierce about this dog breed. The Shih Tzu is a lover, not a hunter. Bred solely to be a companion, the Shih Tzu is an affectionate, happy, outgoing housedog who loves nothing more than to follow his people from room to room. In recent years, however, owners have started taking the Shih Tzu off their laps and into dog sports, training him for obedience, rally, and agility competitions.

Breed Characteristics:
Contrary to popular belief, small size doesn't necessarily an apartment dog make — plenty of small dogs are too high-energy and yappy for life in a high-rise. Being quiet, low energy, fairly calm indoors, and polite with the other residents, are all good qualities in an apartment dog.
Some dogs are simply easier than others: they take to training better and are fairly easygoing. They're also resilient enough to bounce back from your mistakes or inconsistencies. Dogs who are highly sensitive, independent thinking, or assertive may be harder for a first-time owner to manage. You'll get your best match if you take your dog-owning experience into account as you choose your new pooch.
Some dogs will let a stern reprimand roll off their backs, while others take even a dirty look to heart. Low-sensitivity dogs, also called "easygoing," "tolerant," "resilient," and even "thick-skinned," can better handle a noisy, chaotic household, a louder or more assertive owner, and an inconsistent or variable routine. Do you have young kids, throw lots of dinner parties, play in a garage band, or lead a hectic life? Go with a low-sensitivity dog.
Some breeds bond very closely with their family and are more prone to worry or even panic when left alone by their owner. An anxious dog can be very destructive, barking, whining, chewing, and otherwise causing mayhem. These breeds do best when a family member is home during the day or if you can take the dog to work.
Breeds with very short coats and little or no undercoat or body fat, such as Greyhounds, are vulnerable to the cold. Dogs with a low cold tolerance need to live inside in cool climates and should have a jacket or sweater for chilly walks.
Dogs with thick, double coats are more vulnerable to overheating. So are breeds with short noses, like Bulldogs or Pugs, since they can't pant as well to cool themselves off. If you want a heat-sensitive breed, the dog will need to stay indoors with you on warm or humid days, and you'll need to be extra cautious about exercising your dog in the heat.
Some breeds are independent and aloof, even if they've been raised by the same person since puppyhood; others bond closely to one person and are indifferent to everyone else; and some shower the whole family with affection. Breed isn't the only factor that goes into affection levels; dogs who were raised inside a home with people around feel more comfortable with humans and bond more easily.
Being gentle with children, sturdy enough to handle the heavy-handed pets and hugs they can dish out, and having a blasé attitude toward running, screaming children are all traits that make a kid-friendly dog. You may be surprised by who's on that list: Fierce-looking Boxers are considered good with children, as are American Staffordshire Terriers (aka pit bulls). Small, delicate, and potentially snappy dogs such as Chihuahuas aren't so family-friendly.
**All dogs are individuals. Our ratings are generalizations, and they're not a guarantee of how any breed or individual dog will behave. Dogs from any breed can be good with children based on their past experiences, training on how to get along with kids, and personality. No matter what the breed or breed type, all dogs have strong jaws, sharp pointy teeth, and may bite in stressful circumstances. Young children and dogs of any breed should always be supervised by an adult and never left alone together, period.
Friendliness toward dogs and friendliness toward humans are two completely different things. Some dogs may attack or try to dominate other dogs even if they're love-bugs with people; others would rather play than fight; and some will turn tail and run. Breed isn't the only factor; dogs who lived with their littermates and mother until at least 6 to 8 weeks of age, and who spent lots of time playing with other dogs during puppyhood, are more likely to have good canine social skills.
Stranger-friendly dogs will greet guests with a wagging tail and a nuzzle; others are shy, indifferent, or even aggressive. However, no matter what the breed, a dog who was exposed to lots of different types, ages, sizes, and shapes of people as a puppy will respond better to strangers as an adult.
If you're going to share your home with a dog, you'll need to deal with some level of dog hair on your clothes and in your house. However, shedding does vary greatly among the breeds: Some dogs shed year-round, some "blow" seasonally -- produce a snowstorm of loose hair -- some do both, and some shed hardly at all. If you're a neatnik you'll need to either pick a low-shedding breed, or relax your standards.
Drool-prone dogs may drape ropes of slobber on your arm and leave big, wet spots on your clothes when they come over to say hello. If you've got a laid-back attitude toward slobber, fine; but if you're a neatnik, you may want to choose a dog who rates low in the drool department.
Some breeds are brush-and-go dogs; others require regular bathing, clipping, and other grooming just to stay clean and healthy. Consider whether you have the time and patience for a dog that needs a lot of grooming, or the money to pay someone else to do it.
Due to poor breeding practices, some breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, such as hip dysplasia. This doesn't mean that every dog of that breed will develop those diseases; it just means that they're at an increased risk. If you're buying a puppy, it's a good idea to find out which genetic illnesses are common to the breed you're interested in, so you can ask the breeder about the physical health of your potential pup's parents and other relatives.
Some breeds have hearty appetites and tend to put on weight easily. As in humans, being overweight can cause health problems in dogs. If you pick a breed that's prone to packing on pounds, you'll need to limit treats, make sure he gets enough exercise, and measure out his daily kibble in regular meals rather than leaving food out all the time.
Dogs come in all sizes, from the world's smallest pooch, the Chihuahua, to the towering Great Dane, how much space a dog takes up is a key factor in deciding if he is compatible with you and your living space. Large dog breeds might seem overpowering and intimidating but some of them are incredibly sweet! Take a look and find the right large dog for you!
Easy to train dogs are more adept at forming an association between a prompt (such as the word "sit"), an action (sitting), and a consequence (getting a treat) very quickly. Other dogs need more time, patience, and repetition during training. Many breeds are intelligent but approach training with a "What's in it for me?" attitude, in which case you'll need to use rewards and games to teach them to want to comply with your requests.
Dogs who were bred for jobs that require decision making, intelligence, and concentration, such as herding livestock, need to exercise their brains, just as dogs who were bred to run all day need to exercise their bodies. If they don't get the mental stimulation they need, they'll make their own work -- usually with projects you won't like, such as digging and chewing. Obedience training and interactive dog toys are good ways to give a dog a brain workout, as are dog sports and careers, such as agility and search and rescue.
Common in most breeds during puppyhood and in retriever breeds at all ages, mouthiness means a tendency to nip, chew, and play-bite (a soft, fairly painless bite that doesn't puncture the skin). Mouthy dogs are more likely to use their mouths to hold or "herd" their human family members, and they need training to learn that it's fine to gnaw on chew toys, but not on people. Mouthy breeds tend to really enjoy a game of fetch, as well as a good chew on a chew toy that's been stuffed with kibble and treats.
Some breeds sound off more often than others. When choosing a breed, think about how the dog vocalizes — with barks or howls — and how often. If you're considering a hound, would you find their trademark howls musical or maddening? If you're considering a watchdog, will a city full of suspicious "strangers" put him on permanent alert? Will the local wildlife literally drive your dog wild? Do you live in housing with noise restrictions? Do you have neighbors nearby?
Some breeds are more free-spirited than others. Nordic dogs such as Siberian Huskies were bred to range long distances, and given the chance, they'll take off after anything that catches their interest. And many hounds simply must follow their noses, or that bunny that just ran across the path, even if it means leaving you behind.
High-energy dogs are always ready and waiting for action. Originally bred to perform a canine job of some sort, such as retrieving game for hunters or herding livestock, they have the stamina to put in a full workday. They need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation, and they're more likely to spend time jumping, playing, and investigating any new sights and smells. Low-energy dogs are the canine equivalent of a couch potato, content to doze the day away. When picking a breed, consider your own activity level and lifestyle, and think about whether you'll find a frisky, energetic dog invigorating or annoying.
A vigorous dog may or may not be high-energy, but everything he does, he does with vigor: he strains on the leash (until you train him not to), tries to plow through obstacles, and even eats and drinks with great big gulps. These dynamos need lots of training to learn good manners, and may not be the best fit for a home with young kids or someone who's elderly or frail. A low-vigor dog, on the other hand, has a more subdued approach to life.
Some breeds do fine with a slow evening stroll around the block. Others need daily, vigorous exercise -- especially those that were originally bred for physically demanding jobs, such as herding or hunting. Without enough exercise, these breeds may put on weight and vent their pent-up energy in ways you don't like, such as barking, chewing, and digging. Breeds that need a lot of exercise are good for outdoorsy, active people, or those interested in training their dog to compete in a high-energy dog sport, such as agility.
Some dogs are perpetual puppies -- always begging for a game -- while others are more serious and sedate. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog.

Weight: 9 to 16 pounds
Life Span: 10 to 16 years
Highlights
- There is no such breed as an "imperial" or "teacup" Shih Tzu. These are simply marketing terms used by unscrupulous breeders use to indicate a very small or large Shih Tzu.
- Shih Tzus are difficult to housebreak. Be consistent, and do not allow a puppy to roam the house unsupervised until he is completely trained. Crate training is helpful.
- The flat shape of the Shih Tzu's face makes him susceptible to heat stroke, because the air going into the lungs isn't cooled as efficiently as it is among longer-nosed breeds. He should be kept indoors in air-conditioning rooms during hot weather.
- Be prepared to brush and comb the Shih Tzu coat every day. It mats easily.
- While Shih Tzus are trustworthy with children, they're not the best choice for families with toddlers or very young children because their small size puts them at risk for unintentional injury.
- The Shih Tzu tends to wheeze and snore, and can be prone to dental problems.
- While all dogs eat their own or other animals' feces (coprophagia), the Shih Tzu seems especially prone to this behavior. The best way to handle the problem is never let it become a habit. Watch your Shih Tzu closely and clean up poop right away.
- To get a healthy pet, never buy a puppy from a backyard breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Find a reputable breeder who tests her breeding dogs for genetic health conditions and good temperaments.

The Shih Apso is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Brindle the 18-month-old Shih Apso (Lhasa Apso / Shih Tzu mix)—believe it or not, Brindle was born brindle in coloring, hence the name. Coat color change is common within the Lhasa Apso breed. See more pictures of Brindle below. He is one of seven pups from the litter. The dam is the standard Lhasa—cream fur, gray face. The sire was a tricolor—black/brown/white Shih-Tzu. There were three pups like Brindle, one pure black with white blaze on the chest, and three tricolors. Four females, one male. Weights run from 15 pounds through 22 pounds. Brindle was the largest pup in the litter. His owner jokes, "He appears to be species-challenged. He often acts much more like a cat <gasp>. The vet and the breeder insist that I have a dog. It does "woof." He is quite terrier-like. He will nicely retrieve like the Goldens that I've had, but then he wants to kill it. NOT a water dog, but does like a bath and grooming. Enjoys being fussed over."
He also says, "The "wild puppy" behavior had pretty well passed by 9-10 months. Housebreaking went pretty well. By 4 months, the accident level was pretty well down. I have done the crate training with my dogs, which helps a LOT. However, the carpet cleaner is your friend. As Barbara Bush pointed out, puppies and carpets are a bad mix.
"However, I did have problems out at 4 months. Pup would wake up at 4 AM and make a fuss. Took him out. Nothing. Turns out he was simply lonely. Caught on to that, so took him in bed with us. You are talking to a man who has a king-sized bed so that there is more room for the dog. He has no idea what a dog bed is for. There is some possibility that we have gone over the line from pampered to spoiled. ;-) He now associates the crate with us going out for a few hours, and heads for under the bed if he hears the crate door. I have to use a broom to get him out from under the bed. not a pretty picture. MUCH too smart a dog. I think that goes with the terrier and watchdog personality."
Below are photos of him as a pup. "You would not know it is the same dog. The color change is now complete. He is completely cream-colored, with the gray face/beard. Very fine fur, which has a tendency to mat. I use "detangler" to keep it under control, and have to groom him daily. Personality is definitely a mix of the two breeds. Wants to sit in your lap and guard your stuff!"
"You can still see some of the brown markings. He still has dark guard hairs if I let him go long. The battle is between very pretty, long hair and matting up problems."

"Butler is a rescue from California. We adopted him when he was 3 years old. We were told he was a Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu mix. I have seen Havanese dogs and he looks much more like that to me. He is very aggressive and fearful of grooming of any kind, but he is incredibly loving and sticks to me like super glue at home. He loves running at the beach and dog park. He's fixed. He only eats his food when he's hungry and doesn't have set feeding times. He's potty trained. He hates big dogs. Sometimes over silly things he'll cower to the floor, which leads us to believe he was abused at some point. Wings of Hope rescued him and 7 other small white dogs from a high kill shelter. He has a bald spot on his butt that had mange and the hair has not grown back. He's entertaining, loves his toys and is a resource guarder with them."

Lhasa Apso vs Shih Tzu
The Lhasa Apso is bigger than the Shih Tzu. This is the most obvious physical difference between the two breeds. Although bigger, a Lhasa normally has a smaller bone structure, therefore, it will look slimmer than a Shih Tzu, which has a more solid body structure.
Apart from their sizes, a Lhasa Apso has a longer nose, narrower skull, and smaller almond-shaped eyes. Meanwhile, a Shih Tzu has a broader skull with large, round eyes. The coat of the Lhasa is heavy, dense, thick, and hard. The Shih Tzu has a more regal, luxurious double coat, with flowing tresses.
The Lhasa Apso has cat-like feet; round in shape and heavily feathered. On the other hand, a Shih Tzu has padded feet and firm, well muscled legs. The tail of the Lhasa Apso flows towards the back, mimicking the shape of a screw, and is heavily feathered. The Shih Tzu, on the other hand, has a plumed and slightly curved tail that also flows towards the back.
The characters of the Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu are very different. A Lhasa is a happy dog; assertive, a bit aggressive, and more stubborn and wary of strangers. It can display extreme devotion and over protectiveness for its master. A Shih Tzu, on the other hand, is a very friendly, bouncy and happy-go-lucky dog, and loves to play. This breed is not aggressive, and is not wary of strangers.
1. A Lhasa Apso is bigger than a Shih Tzu.
2. A Lhasa Apso has a smaller skeletal structure, causing it to be slimmer than the Shih Tzu, which is longer and well built for its size.
3. A Lhasa Apso has a heavy and hard coat, while the Shih Tzu has luxurious and flowing locks and tresses.
4. A Lhasa is assertive, wary of strangers, and deeply devoted, while a Shih Tzu is so friendly and playful that it will not recognize a stranger as a stranger.

I think the Lhasa apso is portraid as been not a nice dog, where as the Shih Tzu is made to look the better of the two and that is simply not true.
Niether dog is better than the other. I myself have a Lhasa apso called Jello who is a wonderful little dog, who is happy, energetic, completely devoted to his family and loves children. He is very assertive and is a wonderful gaurd dog as he is aloof with strangers but is NOT aggresive one bit and is certainly not stubborn.
His coat is not dence, thick or hard. He has a soft fluffy under coat and long, silky and smooth, elegant top coat which is lovely and feathered round his face and eyes.
His paws are soft, feathered and cat like and his tail is heavily feathered and carried proudly over his back.
He’s slightly longer than he is tall but is very solid and quite muscular for a small dog and I would say more solid and muscular than a Shih Tzu.
But his most wonderful traits are his temprement which is as i’ve said, very loving and affectionate towards his family and friends. Completely devoted to his family. He’s very happy, energetic and very playful and absolutly adores children. As I’ve said he can be aloof with strangers, but only barks, and is not aggressive one bit.
My mum on the other hand has a Shih Tzu called Barkley who has all the same traits and temprement as Jello my Lhasa apso, but Barkley is not aloof with strangers at all and is slightly smaller than Jello. Barkleys eyes are slightly narrower than Jello’s. But apart from those few things and maybe a couple I havn’t mentioned they are very alike and both make wonderful pets.
I totally agree with you Alexandra! I have a female Lhasa-Apso and she is the most sweet lovely breed I ever had. I have a daughter and always kids around and she loves kids always so friendly. Everything else it is just as you descrived yours, body, coat everything. And she is already 13 still full of energy and a very happy wee dog. All the best for you and your sweet Lhasa-Apso
THANK YOU! I thought the exact same thing about the article! Poor Lhasa got the short end of this stick. I have 1 of each, and found this article to be odd.
Thank you for your article. It’s extremely helpful, due to the fact that I cannot locate a lhasa apso to adopt, therefore I was hoping a shih tsunami would be appropriate for my life as a companion. They are both fabulous breeds…as all canines are! Our lives are lucky that canines only and always give…, wish I could say the same for the human race! …♡
I have a lhasa apso Puppy and at the moment he is very playful, happy and loves strangers and children and other dogs, he stops to listen to sounds when out on walks, sits, lays down and comes when when he is called. Only a little stubborn on walks sitting down, but he is improving on this too.

Her ved kejserhoffet i Kina blen racen efterhånden uhyre populær t.
9. Shih Tzu findes i mange farver

History of Shi Apso
The Shih Tzu is a Chinese dog that was bred to look like the classic lions that guard ancient palace facades and are ubiquitous in the country’s mythology. This silky canine has long and luxurious hair with a curled tail that can seem, at times, to merge with its coat.
The Lhasa Apso originates from Tibet. The texture of its coat is coarser than that of the Shih Tzu. One of its most notable features is a distinctive underbite that postures for ferocity but somehow comes off as lovable.
A Historical/Modern Context of the Lhasa Tzu
A keen sense of intelligence characterizes this unique Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso cross. They draw from two different cultures as icons of spiritual guardianship, with monks on the Tibetan side and royalty on the Chinese side.
People who monitor the ongoing political situation in these regions will appreciate the significance of adopting a dog with these two specific backgrounds into their family. This puppy embodies a significant dual heritage, which can inspire a feeling of hope that peace and resolution can come to any situation.
The Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso Cross Breed
This mixed breed is sometimes affectionately called a Shih Apso. It displays an alert and somewhat territorial disposition due to the many centuries of special training.
It is fun to speculate about their potential for ancestral memory as you watch them carry on in such a way as to resemble their ancient trade as guardian of a palace or sanctuary. This antic can be rather cute when they are caught guarding the front yard from invading birds.
Appearance of Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso Mix Puppies
Like just about any other mixed breed dog, the distinctive set of traits of this particular blend is difficult to predict. The height of the puppy could become as high as 12 inches, but it could also turn out a bit shorter.
The fur will most likely be soft, but will probably not be quite as silken as the original Chinese Shih Tzu. It could turn out showing off a bit more of the coarseness of the Lhasa side.
One thing to count on is that your Shih Apso will most likely have long hair, so it is advisable to get a good puppy brush and perhaps a fur-removing roller for clothing and upholstery.
Personality of the Shih Apso
You can count on these dogs to have a certain amount of healthy hostility towards outsiders until they become familiar with the newcomers. For this reason, it is highly recommended that they are exposed as early as possible to any children with whom they will be expected to interact.
They exhibit a gentle nature towards infant companions, yet they provide a lot of energy and activity towards growing children as well. The Shih Tzu Lhasa Apso mix is loyal and can be counted on as a loving friend.
Shih Tzu
