Membership overview

We hope that you as a user and breeder will use this tool extensively to keep our beloved breed as healthy as possible - this is the main goal that we have linked from the very beginning with the idea and realization of this database!

Recent studies with our data have shown that our breed worldwide is based on ONLY 200 dogs that are not related to each other!

This is a very low and alarming number!

It would be highly desirable if no mating would occur worldwide below the threshold of AVK 85% to open the gene pool.

Before each mating you can now calculate this with the help of the database, please use this function!

The AVK is displayed in the lower area.

Advantages of Premium Membership:

  • Advanced search for colors, age, titles, continent, offspring and various examinations.
  • Statistic pages on colors, titles and results of HD, ED, OCD, cystinuria, heart, patella, eyes, thyroid
  • Virtual pedigree of two dogs with numerous statistical functions.

The premium membership is an offer for breeders, who are looking for suitable males or bitches, but also to everyone who is interested in the Newfoundland breed.

Hound Group

Most hounds share the common ancestral trait of being used for hunting. Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. Others demonstrate a phenomenal gift of stamina as they relentlessly run down quarry. Beyond this, however, generalizations about hounds are hard to come by, since the Group encompasses quite a diverse lot. There are Pharaoh Hounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, Afghans and Beagles, among others. Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying. You'd best sample this sound before you decide to get a hound of your own to be sure it's your cup of tea.

A breed of charming contradictions: independent and aloof, but sweet and profoundly loyal.

Treeing Walker Coonhound

Information and Pictures

Roscoe the Treeing Walker Coonhound at 2 years old—"Roscoe does not bark, he bays and howls."

Other Names
  • TWC
  • Walker
Description

The Treeing Walker Coonhound has powerful, mobile shoulders. The ears are large compared to the head. The upper lips hang well below the lower jaw. The forelegs are long, straight and lean. The smooth coat is fine and glossy and comes in a tricolor and a bicolor pattern. (Tricolor is preferred by breeders.) Although it comes in tan and white, it must never be called "red," to distinguish it from the Redbone Coonhound.

Temperament

The Treeing Coonhound is good with children and gets along with other dogs. Training is accomplished with little trouble, as these dogs are able to learn from example. They are primarily working and hunting dogs, but will also make great companion dogs. Working, to the Treeing Walker Coonhound, is not work but a sport and diversion. They thrive on consistent and ample attention. The Treeing Walker will be high-strung without enough mental and physical exercise. Loving and eager to please, the Treeing Walker is intelligent, skilled and confident. Some say they are the best breed for coonhound field trials because of their speed, ability to locate quickly and good treeing ability. They are swift with a very good sense of smell and a distinctive howl. Socialize at a young age.

Height, Weight

Height: 20 - 27 inches (51 - 69 cm)

Weight: 50 - 70 pounds (23 - 32 kg)

Health Problems

A relatively healthy breed.

Living Conditions

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is not recommended for apartment life. These scenthounds are too anxious to lie idly around a suburban home or condo. They are suitable for hot, sunny climates.

This very anxious and energetic dog has been bred for severe physical exercise. Coonhounds are born natural hunters, so they have a tendency to run off and hunt if they are not kept well-fenced while exercising on their own. They have no road sense at all, so they must be kept in a safe environment. They need to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk or jog. Coonhounds that do not receive enough mental and physical exercise may become high strung and even destructive.

Life Expectancy

About 12-13 years.

The Treeing is an easy-care breed. An occasional combing and brushing is all that is needed. Check the ears regularly for any sign of infection and be sure to keep the insides of the ears clean. Bathe only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.

The Treeing Walker is a descendant of the English Foxhound, which Thomas Walker imported to Virginia in 1742. Sometime in the 1800s, a dog known as "Tennessee Lead," a stolen dog of unknown origin, was crossed into the Walker Hound. He was a powerful dog, excelling in game sense, drive and speed, and having a clear, short-chop mouth. The Treeing Walker was not recognized as its own breed until 1946. This direct lineage brings us this efficient hunter. This coonhound has retained the looks of its ancestor, the English Foxhound. An underlying sense of game coupled with untiring speed and manly drive make this coonhound unstoppable. The coonhound lineage doesn't really stop at the Walker, for American hunters also employ other varieties as well. One such coonhound is known as the Running Walker. The Treeing Walker Coonhound is an efficient and reliable hunter of raccoons, squirrels and opossums. The Treeing Walker "trees" its prey, and can then sometimes virtually climb the tree to get at it. With a little training, however, it will merely bay its distinctive howl, telling the hunter that the prey has been cornered.

Jack is a LARGE Treeing Walker Coonhound weighing in at about 72 lbs. But he's a walker through and through. He loves to fetch with a stick and truly enjoys his large bone. He's fantastic with my 3 year old daughter, who's been taught that dogs don't like the same things we do. He's patient, kind, absolutely loyal and loves nothing more than work days (out in the yard or on the truck). His velvety ears and hound dog scent are the first thing I see in the morning. He's also great friends with our family cat (Poppy), and he knows she's in charge (under me) and values her space unless she wants to play with him. He loves to run at the dog park with other coonhounds."

Plott Hound

Information and Pictures

This is Duke the Plott Hound at 12 months old, weighing 75 pounds!

Other Names
  • Plott
  • Plott Cur
Description

The Plott Hound is a medium-sized, powerful, muscular dog. The skull is moderately flat with well-fitted skin. The muzzle is moderately long with flews that make it look square. The lips and nose are black. The prominent eyes are brown or hazel with black eye rims. The hanging ears are broad-set and medium in length. The long tail is set below the topline. The strong feet have webbed toes. The coat is short, smooth, fine and glossy. While most Plott coats are single, from time to time a double coat can occur. Coat colors include any shade of brindle, solid black, brindle with black saddle, black with brindle trim, and a rare buckskin. There may be some white around the chest and feet.

Temperament

This breed makes a fine companion. Loyal and intelligent, the Plott Hound is quick to learn, quick to love and good with children. Its personable nature is surely not evident on the trail. This large-game hunter and scenthound has great courage. Determined, courageous and proud, it will play chicken with a 500-pound bear or a wild, angry boar. The Plott has a curiously sharp and high-pitched voice, unlike the deep-throated howl common to other coonhounds. Socialize this breed at an early age and be sure to teach it simple obedience like walking on a leash. Plotts tend to drool and slobber. They need a firm, but calm, confident, consistent handler. Proper canine to human communication is essential.

Height, Weight

Height: 20 - 25 inches (51 - 63 cm)

Weight: 40 - 75 pounds (18 - 34 kg)

Some lines being bred are producing larger dogs.

Health Problems

The Plott Hound is considered the hardiest of the coonhounds. It eats large quantities of food quickly, which makes it susceptible to gastric torsion and life-threatening twisting of the stomach. Do not exercise this dog after a big meal.

Living Conditions

The Plott Hound is not recommended for apartment life. It can live and sleep outdoors provided it has proper shelter. This breed has no road sense at all and should be kept in a safe area because it has a tendency to wander.

The Plott Hound needs a lot of physical exercise, which includes a daily, long, brisk walk or jog. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. This well-muscled and rather lean-boned dog has the endurance and stamina to work all day and well into the night. The Plott Hound should have chances to run free, but is born a natural hunter and has a tendency to run off and hunt if not kept in a well-fenced area while exercising off the lead.

Life Expectancy

About 12-14 years

The short coat of the Plott Hound is easy to groom. Comb and brush occasionally to remove the dead hair. Check the ears often to make sure they are clean and infection free. After hunting they should be checked for torn nails, split pads on their feet, torn ears, and fleas and ticks.

The Plott Hound is the only American hound without British ancestry. In 1750 Jonathan Plott and his brother left Germany bound for America. They took with them five Hanoverian Hounds. Jonathan Plott's brother died during the trip but Jonathan settled in North Carolina. It was there that he raised a family and bred his dogs. A mix of Bloodhounds and Curs reportedly comprised the original stock. For the next 200 years the dogs were bred by generations of Plott family members and were referred to as the Plott's hounds. The dogs worked at hunting bear and raccoon in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains of the eastern United States. The Plott family rarely put the dogs on the market so they remained rare outside the southern United States. The dogs were recognized for the first time in 1946 by the United Kennel Club. Plotts are hardy and have superior hunting instincts. They are very effective in the search for coyotes, wolves and wildcats. The breed was carefully developed to be stronger and more persistent. They were able to make good family companions but were seldom kept as such, as most owners acquired the dogs for the hunt. In 2006 the breed was officially recognized by the AKC as the "Plott" and is now shown as a show dog, but there are many who still hunt and breed them as hunting dogs.

SnoopDogg the Plott Hound at about 7 years old—"Snoop and I were meant to be together. I had just lost a Rhodesian Ridgeback and was dogless. I have always been a hound person. Snoop was standing in the middle of a two lane highway in the middle of nowhere in NM. He had no collar and was standing over the dead body of a different type of dog. Because it was obvious that he was feral, I don't know if the dead dog was his running buddy or lunch. The other dog had been hit by a car. There were car parts all over the road and cars and trucks were whizzing by without even slowing down. I had to try and catch him. Took some time because he was scared to death but I finally got my hands on him. He was covered with buckshot and was skin and bones. I thought he was a grayhound because his tail was tucked so tightly underneath his belly that his shape looked like a grayhound. His head, though was all coonhound. I managed to get him into the back seat of my truck and took him home. He had never been in a vehicle before and was shaking and having a panic attack. Then it was obvious that he had never been in a house before either. I started housebreaking immediately. He made one mistake and never made another one. "

SnoopDogg the Plott Hound at about 7 years old—"The following day, I took him to the vet. The vet said he was a Plott Hound and thought he was about 4 or 5 months old. He was scared to death! The vet said he was heartworm negative and I should socialize him and feed him to put weight on. When he was back to a normal weight, the vet scheduled his series of shots and neutered him. I took him everywhere. He was joined at my hip. After a while, I didn't even need a leash except when we were in town. Otherwise, I think he was so scared to lose me that I couldn't have shaken him if I had wanted to. Socialization took a while and is on going even though it has been six years. He still is not comfortable with men, although he will warm up eventually. It definitely is a body type of a man that he is most afraid of, so I assume that had to do with the buckshot he was covered with. He gets along with cats and other dogs and loves kids. He is better about resource guarding (food) and still will not play with a toy. I believe he was removed from his siblings and his mother very early and never got the training that is so important that puppies all learn from their litter mates."

SnoopDogg the Plott Hound at about 7 years old—"His biggest issue is still the sound of gunshots or vehicles back firing. He still has panic attacks where he has to go find a dark quiet space where he can hide until he can relax. He used to get under my bed and pant, shake and drool. I tried to get under the bed with him and tell him it was ok. ooops! I have been watching Cesar Milan forever and happened to catch an episode that he dealt with a frightened and panicked dog. By going under the bed with Snoop to try and calm him down, I was feeding the behavior. he was getting attention for acting that way. so I stopped all attention at that time and just let him deal with it. When he felt comfortable to come out of his hiding spot, then I gave him lots of attention. It does still happen, but he doesn't have the need to get under my bed anymore. Now he can be ok laying on his bed and then checks in with me when he's over the episode. I wish I could help him get over this fear, but it's been so long at this point that I doubt if it will ever be gone totally. He enjoys going to the dog park. He meets and greets everybody and avoids unstable dogs - all by himself. He is a comedian and he makes everybody at the park laugh. Everybody knows his name. He is very protective of me, still loves to play like a puppy and I thank God every day that I happened to be on the highway in NM that day."

Augie the Plott Hound at 3 1/2 years old—"Augie was newly brought into my life. He is sweet, smart and loves to cuddle on the couch! He loves running in the snow and taking rides in the car."

A New Silhouette: How to wear Flared Jeans

My sweeties, after all the birthday celebration, I have a new outfit for you today. A wintery look and a question for you: what kind of denim girl are you? Are you, like me, a skinny-jeans type? Boyfriend-jeans? (I love those, too), Mom-jeans? (damn, I love wearing those as well) or flares?

Okay, it seems I love all kinds of denim, haha. I couldn’t choose to save my life, but it’s a fact that I own around 10 pairs of skinny jeans, one pair of mom jeans (that I always wear, though), two pairs of ripped boyfriend jeans and now, also my first pair of true flared jeans! I know, I showed you a pair of flares in this outfit post before, but they aren’t made of denim. Then, I also showed you a pair of marlene-pants, but they are not actually flares, either.

So yes, it was about time and so this is in fact my first pair of real flares I’m wearing since the mid-1990s and I’m super surprised how well they suit me! Especially worn with heels, they make your legs look endlessly long and beautiful. But how do you wear flares compared to skinny jeans?

Well, I found out combining oversized knitwear like I always do with my skinny jeans doesn’t quite work with flares. It simply is not flattering for your body shape. Those flares really ask for a better-fitted top like this super thick, warm knit. With its long sleeves, you even mirror the almost overly long shape of the jeans and the whole look simply stretches your figure. It’s an easy trick but works soo well!

What do you think of flared jeans? Would you wear them and do you agree with how I styled them? Let me know, babes and enjoy your week!

I think these jeans look awesome on you! I’m very skeptical when it comes to flared jeans but the way you styled them, they look absolutely stunning. I might have to try them again :D

Perfectly styled and perfectly minimalistic outfit! I’m totally loving your chunky sweater, it’s just the kind that I like to wear myself too!

Vertebral Scale System to Measure Heart Size in Radiographs

This article describes a method for measuring heart size relative to vertebral length in radiographs. The lengths of the long and short axes of the heart are scaled against the length of vertebrae dorsal to the heart beginning with the fourth thoracic vertebra (v). The sum of the long and short axes of the heart is the vertebral heart size (VHS). In 100 normal dogs, VHS was 9.7v ± 0.5 SD. The differences between wide- and deep-chested dogs, males and females, and right or left lateral recumbency were not significant. In 100 normal cats, the average VHS was 7.5v ± 0.3. The short-axis dimension of the heart in ventrodorsal radiographs of cats was 3.4v ± 0.25.
