Schwarzer Hund GSD L.L.C. was founded as a limited liability company operating in Chambers County, AL in 2006 and is dedicated to the betterment, preservation and training of quality, working-capable German Shepherd Dogs.

All of our Dogs and Pups are sold with a contract that specifies the rights and responsibilities of both the seller and buyer. A health guarantee is included in the terms of this contract. Also, we have a contract for Stud Service.

Most all of out Dogs and Puppies are registered or eligible for registration under the rules and auspices of the American Kennel Club. Dogs are sold with two types of registration: with full registration comes full rights to the animal; with limited registration the dog is not to be used for breeding and entry in dog events is restricted. Some dogs (usually Malinois) are sold w/Continental Kennel Club registration.

Reservations, whether for a specific puppy in a current litter, or for the pick of a puppy in a planned litter, are taken on a strictly first come, first served basis. A dog or puppy will be reserved only after a $250.00 deposit has been received. Instant payment/reservations can be made on our payment page by qualified clients (a "qualified" client is simply one that has been interviewed <usually this can be done over the phone> and is deemed by us to be able to care for one of our dogs) Deposits for reservations are nonrefundable in most circumstances, but can always be transferred to a later litter for any reason .

Delivery can be arranged for an additional fee to be determined by the destination's distance from our kennel and the method of transport used. Transport method and logistics will be determined by agreement between the seller and buyer. Regional delivery is done by Schwarzer Hund and delivery outside the Southeast is usually done via Continental Pet safe or Delta Pet Firstв„ў out of Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, GA. Regional delivery requires a deposit for the full delivery price due at least 24 hours before transport. Regional delivery fees are based on distance traveled and currently range from $50-$350. Dogs shipped via air require a delivery deposit of $100 due at least 14 days before shipment. This deposit covers the cost of health certification, any necessary vaccinations (rabies, bordetella, etc), transport of the animal to Hartsfield International Airport and a kennel for shipment. The actual cost of air shipment is then due at least 48 hours before delivery of the pup or dog to the airport of the buyer's choice.

Prices effective January 01, 2018: P ups w/limited registration are priced at $1450.00 and pups w/full registration are priced at $1650.00 (unless otherwise noted or agreed upon). With limited registration the dog is not to be used for breeding and entry in some AKC events are restricted: with full registration breeding and AKC showing is unrestricted. Juvenile and adult dogs are priced individually according to bloodlines and level of training. A puppy purchased with an obedience package is $2250.00. Basic or advanced obedience training (prerequisite of basic obedience) is $1050.

An open letter to potential clients from Robert G. Whitlock, owner/operator of Schwarzer Hund GSD L.L.C .

The focus of our breeding program is to produce balanced dogs capable of work. Our intent is to produce tractable, reliable, good tempered dogs with working ability. We have had great success by blending German and Belgian lines with German and Eastern European working lines, producing excellent family, companion and working dogs that simultaneously have both the propensity for work characteristically found in working line German Shepherds and the stable temperament and beauty of the show line dogs.

German Shepherd Dog

Generally considered dogdom's finest all-purpose workers, German Shepherd Dogs are large, agile, muscular dogs of noble spirit and high intelligence. For such deep-chested, solid dogs, they move quickly with great nimbleness afoot. The German Shepherd's natural gait is a free-and-easy trot, but when duty calls they can turn it up a notch or two and reach great speeds. Standing as high as 26 inches at the shoulder and built like a brick doghouse, the German Shepherd Dog when viewed in outline presents a picture of smooth, graceful curves rather than angles.

General Appearance

The first impression of a good German Shepherd Dog is that of a strong, agile, well muscled animal, alert and full of life. It is well balanced, with harmonious development of the forequarter and hindquarter. The dog is longer than tall, deep-bodied, and presents an outline of smooth curves rather than angles. It looks substantial and not spindly, giving the impression, both at rest and in motion, of muscular fitness and nimbleness without any look of clumsiness or soft living. The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility - difficult to define, but unmistakable when present. Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, and every animal gives a definite impression of masculinity or femininity, according to its sex.

The head is noble, cleanly chiseled, strong without coarseness, but above all not fine, and in proportion to the body. The head of the male is distinctly masculine, and that of the bitch distinctly feminine. The expression keen, intelligent and composed. Eyes of medium size, almond shaped, set a little obliquely and not protruding. The color is as dark as possible. Ears are moderately pointed, in proportion to the skull, open toward the front, and carried erect when at attention, the ideal carriage being one in which the center lines of the ears, viewed from the front, are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ground.

The neck is strong and muscular, clean-cut and relatively long, proportionate in size to the head and without loose folds of skin. When the dog is at attention or excited, the head is raised and the neck carried high; otherwise typical carriage of the head is forward rather than up and but little higher than the top of the shoulders, particularly in motion. Topline- The withers are higher than and sloping into the level back. The back is straight, very strongly developed without sag or roach, and relatively short. The whole structure of the body gives an impression of depth and solidity without bulkiness.

Forequarters

The shoulder blades are long and obliquely angled, laid on flat and not placed forward. The upper arm joins the shoulder blade at about a right angle. Both the upper arm and the shoulder blade are well muscled. The forelegs, viewed from all sides, are straight and the bone oval rather than round.

The ideal dog has a double coat of medium length. The outer coat should be as dense as possible, hair straight, harsh and lying close to the body. A slightly wavy outer coat, often of wiry texture, is permissible. The head, including the inner ear and foreface, and the legs and paws are covered with short hair, and the neck with longer and thicker hair. The rear of the forelegs and hind legs has somewhat longer hair extending to the pastern and hock, respectively.

Hindquarters

The whole assembly of the thigh, viewed from the side, is broad, with both upper and lower thigh well muscled, forming as nearly as possible a right angle. The upper thigh bone parallels the shoulder blade while the lower thigh bone parallels the upper arm. The metatarsus (the unit between the hock joint and the foot) is short, strong and tightly articulated.

German Shepherd DogCare

Good nutrition for the German Shepherd Dog is very important from puppyhood to his senior years.

The breed's thick double short coat requires regular weekly grooming with a pin brush and slicker brush.

Very Active; These big guys were born to work; they require regular mental and physical exercise.

German Shepherd Dogs are generally a healthy breed.

Belgian Shepherd Temperament: What's Good About 'Em, What's Bad About 'Em

Temperament, Personality, Behavior, Traits, and Characteristics, by Michele Welton. Copyright © 2000-2018

Belgian Shepherd Dogs come in four varieties:

  • the Belgian Groenendael, aka Belgian Sheepdog (longhaired black)
  • the Belgian Tervuren (longhaired fawn/mahogany)
  • the Belgian Malinois (shorthaired fawn/mahogany)
  • the Belgian Laekenois (roughhaired fawn)

Most of the world, including the breed's own native country, consider the four varieties to be one breed called Belgian Shepherd Dog.

Unfortunately the American Kennel Club has decided that the four varieties should be considered separate breeds. The AKC doesn't use the term Belgian Shepherd at all.

You might be wondering why this is so unfortunate. Because when they're considered different breeds, they can't be bred together, which means each "breed" has its own small gene pool instead of one large one. Larger gene pools are best for the greatest genetic diversity, and genetic diversity is important for long-term health and vigor.

To make matters even more confusing, the AKC re-named the Groenendael as Belgian Sheepdog! Which is just silly, since all four varieties are sheepdogs or shepherd dogs – none more so than another.

Now. on to temperament!

The Belgian Shepherd is an extremely intelligent but challenging breed to live with. Athletic. Agile. Graceful. Elegant. The breed is frequently in motion, often moving in quick, light-footed circles.

Sounds lovely, doesn't it? Ah but. high energy means a lot of exercise is needed to stay in good condition.

Even more important than physical exercise is mental exercise (advanced obedience, agility, herding, schutzhund, or tracking sports). Belgian Shepherds become bored, frustrated, and prone to obsessive behaviors without something to do. This is a demanding breed that needs ongoing supervision and structured activities.

Belgian Malinois, shorthaired variety of Belgian Shepherd

Sometimes playing the mischievous clown, yet more often serious, the Belgian Shepherd is highly observant with strangers, typically reserved and aloof, and has strong protective instincts. As such, Belgian Shepherds need more extensive socialization than most breeds so that their watchfulness doesn't become suspiciousness or sharpness. Shyness and spookiness are also present in a good number of Belgian Shepherd lines.

Most Belgian Shepherds are okay with other pets if raised together. But dog-to-dog aggression is not uncommon and many individuals have a high prey drive and will pursue anything that moves. Small animals should be introduced with great care and supervision.

Though extremely attentive and responsive to the direction of a confident owner, Belgian Shepherds can nonetheless prove difficult for an inexperienced owner to train. The breed is often sensitive to correction, so he requires a light hand on the leash. BUT he also knows his own mind and can have dominant tendencies, so you must project firmness and leadership.

The four varieties of Belgian Shepherd do have some differences in temperament (though these generalities don't apply to every individual).

  • The Malinois, for example, is a top-notch competitor in protection dog sports like schutzhund and ring sport, and is frequently used by law enforcement as a police dog. Malinois have the highest energy level (to the point of hyperactivity). Typically they have an intense and "driven" personality, and a pronounced prey/chase drive. Malinois from working lines were never intended to be family pets and should not be kept as such.
  • The Laekenois has also proven himself in protection dog sports and needs a confident owner who can control a dominant dog.
  • Some Tervuren are successful in protection dog sports. But this variety more often competes in advanced obedience and agility (obstacle course). Tervurens vary from high energy to more mellow, from happy-go-lucky to nervous and skittish.
  • Groenendaels (the black variety) often have a "softer" temperament and a less pronounced working drive. Yet plenty of individuals are still top-notch competition dogs.

If you want a dog who.

  • Is large and strong – but also elegant and graceful
  • Is exceedingly smart and versatile – when well-trained, can learn and do almost anything
  • Excels in performance activities
  • Is observant and watchful, with strong protective instincts
  • Comes in several coats and colors

A Belgian Shepherd may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with.

  • High activity level
  • Vigorous exercise requirements
  • Participating regularly with your dog in challenging canine sports
  • Destructiveness when bored or not exercised enough
  • Aggression or fearfulness toward strangers in some lines, or when not socialized enough
  • Aggression toward other animals
  • Strong-willed mind of his own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge
  • Chasing and nipping at things that move: children, joggers, other animals, bikes
  • Heavy shedding (Malinois, Groenendael, Tervuren)

A Belgian Shepherd may not be right for you.

Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training.

  • You can avoid some negative traits by choosing an ADULT dog from an animal shelter or rescue group. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult Belgian Shepherds have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics.
  • If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up.
  • Finally, you can avoid some negative traits by training your Belgian Shepherd to respect you and by following the 11-step care program in my book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy.

More traits and characteristics of the Belgian Shepherd

If I was considering a Belgian Shepherd, I would be most concerned about.

  1. Providing enough exercise and mental stimulation. Belgian Shepherds MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and to use their busy minds to do interesting things. Bored Belgians can destroy your house and yard.

Belgian Shepherds were never intended to be simply household pets. Their working behaviors (chasing, nipping, poking) are inappropriate in a normal household setting. Trying to suppress these "hardwired" behaviors, without providing alternate outlets for their high energy level, can be difficult.

Belgian Tervuren, the longhaired brownish variety of Belgian Shepherd

Frankly, most Belgian Shepherds (unless you adopt an obviously laid-back adult) are "too much dog" for the average household.

Belgian Malinois

Mals are squarely built, proud, and alert herders standing 22 to 26 inches at the shoulder. There’s an honest, no-frills look about them, as befit dogs built to work hard for their feed. Mals are strong and well muscled, but more elegant than bulky. A breed hallmark is a proud carriage of the head. Coat colors range from a rich fawn to mahogany. The black ears and mask accentuate the smart, questioning gaze emanating from eyes the color of dark Belgian chocolate.

General Appearance

The Belgian Malinois is a well balanced, square dog, elegant in appearance with an exceedingly proud carriage of the head and neck. The dog is strong, agile, well muscled, alert, and full of life. He stands squarely on all fours and viewed from the side, the topline, forelegs, and hind legs closely approximate a square. The whole conformation gives the impression of depth and solidity without bulkiness. The male is usually somewhat more impressive and grand than his female counterpart, which has a distinctly feminine look.

The head is clean-cut and strong without heaviness; overall size is in proportion to the body. Theexpression should indicate alertness, attention and readiness for activity, and the gaze is intelligent and questioning. The eyes are brown, preferably dark brown, medium size, slightly almond shaped, not protruding. Eye rims are black. The ears approach the shape of an equilateral triangle and are stiff, erect, and in proportion to the head in size. The outer corner of the ear should not come below the center of the eye. Ears hanging as on a hound, or semi-prick ears are disqualifications.

The neck is round and of sufficient length to permit the proud carriage of the head. It should taper from the body to the head. The topline is generally level. The withers are slightly higher and slope into the back which must be level, straight and firm from withers to hip joint. The croup is medium long, sloping gradually. The body should give the impression of power without bulkiness. The chest is not broad but is deep with the lowest point reaching the elbow. The underline forms a smooth ascendant curve from the lowest point of the chest to the abdomen. The abdomen is moderately developed, neither tucked up nor paunchy. The loin section, viewed from above, is relatively short, broad and strong, and blends smoothly into the back. The tail is strong at the base, the bone reaching to the hock. In action it is raised with a curve, which is strongest towards the tip, without forming a hook. A cropped or stumped tail is a disqualification.

Forequarters

The forequarters are muscular without excessive bulkiness. The shoulder is long and oblique, laid flat against the body, forming a sharp angle with the upper arm. The legs are straight, strong, and parallel to each other. The bone is oval rather than round. Length and substance are well in proportion to the size of the dog. The pastern is of medium length, strong, and very slightly sloped. Dewclaws may be removed. The feet are round (cat footed) and well padded with the toes curved close together. The nails are strong and black except that they may be white to match white toe tips.

The coat should be comparatively short, straight, hard enough to be weather resistant, with dense undercoat. It should be very short on the head, ears, and lower legs. The hair is somewhat longer around the neck where it forms a collarette, and on the tail and backs of the thighs. The coat should conform to the body without standing out or hanging down.

Hindquarters

Angulation of the hindquarters is in balance with the forequarters; the angle at the hock is relatively sharp, although the Belgian Malinois should not have extreme angulation. The upper and lower thigh bones should approximately parallel the shoulder blade and upper arm respectively. The legs are in proportion to the size of the dog; oval bone rather than round. Legs are parallel to each other. The thighs should be well muscled. Dewclaws, if any, should be removed. Metatarsi are of medium length, strong, and slightly sloped. The hind feet may be slightly elongated, with toes curved close together and well padded. Nails are strong and black except that they may be white to match white toe tips.

Good nutrition for Belgian Malinois is very important from puppyhood to their senior years.

This breed has a double coat that will require regular brushing to keep it in good condition.

Very Active; A high-energy worker who demands plenty of exercise.

Belgian Malinois are generally a healthy breed.
