Stefan Cooke wins the H&M Design Award 2018

Yesterday in London, Stefan Cooke was announced as the winner of the H&M Design Award 2018. A graduate of MA programme at Central Saint Martins, United Kingdom, Stefan was selected from eight international finalists by a jury of fashion experts chaired by H&M’s creative advisor Ann-Sofie Johansson. As the newly crowned winner of the H&M Design Award, Stefan will receive up to €50,000 in prize money.

“It was really tough to come to a decision, but everybody on the jury panel agreed that Stefan’s collection felt really fresh, innovative and well-executed. You were immediately drawn to each of the pieces, becoming more and more curious about the processes involved. He’s such a clever person and very driven, but at the same time, a really humble person. We’re all so happy for him,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s creative advisor.

It was innovation that won Stefan Cooke the 2018 H&M Design Award –innovation in technique, silhouette, materials and most importantly, imagination. A graduate of the MA at Central Saint Martins, United Kingdom, 25-year-old Stefan first worked under fashion design visionaries such Walter van Beirendonck and John Galliano before his appointment to Maison Margiela. For the winning H&M Design Award collection, Stefan explored the idea of an everyday wardrobe for men and subverted pieces such as jeans, a leather jacket or cricket jumper by replicating them in unusual ways, either printing them onto elastic or pulling out threads of knitwear to create a type of mesh. It was this kind of forward-thinking and wit that ultimately impressed the jury.

“I feel overwhelmed right now about winning the award. I really wanted to show the exact things that men wear, but then recreate them in an entirely new way. Because I was a textiles student, I began looking for new ways to get certain things across visually and I came across elastic. I just found that the possibilities with it were endless,” says Stefan Cooke.

After spending time with each of the eight finalists and looking through their collections, Stefan was ultimately selected by an international jury of fashion experts led by Ann-Sofie, creative advisor at H&M.

“For me, what Stefan does really stands out for two reasons. One, it’s really exciting to see someone who’s doing something so innovative and experimental in menswear. Two, the way he’s experimenting with silhouette and materials, the finish of things and playing with pattern, Stefan is very inventive. It all feels incredibly new, especially on the menswear scene,” says Alex Fury, jury member and fashion journalist.

WINNER 2017: RICHARD QUINN

Richard Quinn from Central Saint Martins is the winner of the H&M Design Award 2017

Yesterday in London, Richard Quinn was announced as the winner of the H&M Design Award 2017. Richard, a graduate from Central Saint Martins, was selected from eight international finalists by a jury of fashion experts chaired by H&M’s creative advisor Ann-Sofie Johansson. Richard Quinn wins €50,000, one-year’s mentorship from H&M, and the chance to develop pieces from the winning collection to be sold in selected H&M stores in Autumn 2017.

“We all fell in love with Richard. He has a clear vision for his brand, and a real wow factor in his collections. Richard is deeply creative, with a very holistic view of the environment, and he’s a worthy winner of the H&M Design Award 2017,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s creative advisor.

“It means so much to win the H&M Design Award. I want to create my own collection, as well as offer my generation a creative hub, supporting real craft in London,” say Richard Quinn, winner of the H&M Design Award.

The jury spent time with each of the eight finalists, taking the opportunity to look through their collections. After deliberating in private, the winner was announced to an audience of international fashion editors and stylists.

“Richard Quinn has the makings of something really great. There is a depth of creativity, with so many different ideas, a real commercial potential and also the sustainable thinking that will help him build a real values-based brand,” says Imran Amed, editor in chief of Business of Fashion.

26 year-old Richard Quinn impressed the jury with his unique vision for the future of fashion. The London-born graduate from the Central Saint Martins MA course not only cuts womenswear pieces that are both striking and desirable. He also prints all of his own fabrics using ethical processes, and plans to open a print studio that will become a creative hub for other young designers in London. It’s a holistic approach that runs through all of Quinn’s work, which he hopes will prove to be a new model for the fashion industry in the 21st century.

The jury expressed their excitement at meeting all of the finalists, who each showcased their unique design talents. The finalists each win €5,000.

General Appearance

Ancient Italian breed medium-large size Molossus Dog. Sturdy, with a strong skeleton. Muscular and athletic, it moves with considerable ease and elegance. It has always been a property watchdog and hunter of difficult game such as the wild boar.

Molossus, large, its total length reaches approximately one third of the height at the withers. Planes of the skull and muzzle are slightly convergent; they are not parallel. The circumference of the head measured at the cheekbones is more than twice the total length of the head; skin is firm and smooth.Skull - Viewed from the front, skull is wide and slightly curved; width is equal to the length. From the side, a prominent arch begins above the eyes and then flattens backward toward the occiput. Viewed from the top, it has a square appearance due to the zygomatic arches and powerful muscles swathing it. Stop - Well-defined due to developed and bulging frontal sinuses and prominent arch above the eyes.

Neck, Topline, Body

Neck-Slightly arched, flowing smoothly into the shoulders with a small amount of dewlap. The length of the neck is approximately one third the height at the withers. Body - Depth of the ribcage is equal to half the total height of the dog, descending slightly below the elbow. Ribs are long and well sprung. Moderate tuck up. Chest - Broad, well-muscled, strong forefront. Back - Wide, strong, muscular. Highest part of shoulder blade slightly rising above the strong, level back. Loin - Well-muscled, and harmoniously joined to the back. Croup - Long, wide, slightly sloping. Rump should be quite round due to muscling.

Forequarters

Strong and muscular, well-proportioned to the size of the dog. Straight when viewed from the front or side; height of the limb at the elbow is equal to 50 percent of the height at the withers. Shoulders- Muscular, laid back. Upper arms - Strongly muscled, with good bone, powerful. Elbows - Held parallel to the ribcage, turning neither in nor out. Forelegs - Straight and with good bone, well muscled. Pasterns - Almost straight, strong but flexible. Feet - Round with well-arched toes (catlike). Lean, hard, dark pads and nails, except in the case of white toes. Front dewclaws - Can remain or be removed, if left intact should only be a single dewclaw on each leg.

Hindquarters

As a whole, they are powerful and strong, in harmony with the forequarters. Straight when viewed from the rear or front. Thighs - Long, wide, angulated and well-muscled. Stifle - Should be moderately angulated, strong. Legs - Strong bone and muscle structure. Hocks - Wide set, thick and clean, let down and parallel when viewed from behind. Rear pastern - straight and parallel. Rear dewclaws - Any rear dewclaws are removed. Hind feet - Slightly more oval-shaped and less-arched toes.

The coat is short, stiff, shiny, adherent and dense with a light undercoat that becomes thicker in cold weather.

Cane CorsoCare

Good nutrition for Cane Corsi is very important from puppyhood to his senior years.

Since Cane Corsi have short coats, they are light shedders.

Corsi are smart, trainable, eager to please, versatile, and docile and intensely loyal with their humans.

The Cane Corso is generally a healthy breed.

Cane Corso Temperament: What's Good About 'Em, What's Bad About 'Em

Cane Corso Temperament, Personality, Behavior, Traits, and Characteristics, by Michele Welton. Copyright © 2000-2018

When it comes to athleticism, agility, speed, energy level, and sense of adventure, the Cane Corso (CAH-nay COR-so) easily outdoes the other mastiff breeds.

This robust dog needs his share of exercise, but above all he requires personal interaction and lots of companionship. He lives for his family and may become destructive if left alone too much.

Cane Corso puppies should be friendly and trusting with strangers. With proper socialization, they become more aloof and discerning as they mature.

As with all mastiffs, socialization is an absolute requirement to promote the correct temperament, which should be protective in a calm and discriminating way. Unfortunately, an awful lot of people are breeding or raising these dogs in irresponsible ways and the result is an awful lot of Cane Corsos with unstable or aggressive temperaments that can be dangerous to innocent people.

Though the Cane Corso was not used for dog-fighting, dog aggression (often very serious) can still be a problem. He should be thoroughly socialized with other dogs from an early age. I wouldn't keep a Cane Corso with another large dog of the same sex.

The Cane Corso is more attentive to his owner and more responsive to training than other mastiffs. Though quite dominant and strong-willed, he will respect an owner who is confident and consistent.

Cane Corsos have tighter skin than other mastiffs and drool less. Some love to dig holes, and most enjoy splashing in water, whether it be a pond or a mudhole, the lawn sprinkler or their water bowl. These are not dainty dogs for fastidious housekeepers!

If you want a dog who.

  • Is massive and powerful
  • Has a short easy-care coat
  • Is calm and quiet indoors as an adult
  • Makes an imposing watchdog
  • Is serious and self-assured with strangers, yet generally mild-mannered unless aroused
  • Compared to other mastiffs, is more energetic, more athletic, and more responsive to training

A Cane Corso may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with.

  • A huge dog who takes up a lot of space in your house and car
  • A heavy dog who wants to sit on your feet and lean his weight against your leg
  • Rowdiness and exuberant jumping when young
  • Destructiveness when bored or left alone too much
  • Potential aggression toward people when not acquired from a responsible source or when not raised and trained properly
  • Potential aggression toward other animals
  • Strong-willed mind of his own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge
  • Snorting, snuffling, wheezing, grunting, loud snoring
  • Slobbering and drooling (individuals with heavy jowls)
  • Gassiness (flatulence)
  • Legal liabilities (public perception, future breed bans, insurance problems, increased chance of lawsuits)

A Cane Corso may not be right for you.

Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training.

  • You can avoid some negative traits by choosing an ADULT dog from an animal shelter or rescue group. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult Cane Corsos have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics.
  • If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Unfortunately, you usually can't tell whether a puppy has inherited temperament or health problems until he grows up.
  • Finally, you can avoid some negative traits by training your Cane Corso to respect you and by following the 11-step care program in my book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy.

More traits and characteristics of the Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff)

If I was considering a Cane Corso, I would be most concerned about.

  1. Providing the proper balance of exercise. Young Cane Corsos need enough exercise to keep them lean and healthy, but not so much that their soft growing bones, joints, and ligaments become over-stressed and damaged. Adult Cane Corsos need more exercise to keep them in shape, but not in hot or humid weather for fear of overheating. The proper amount of exercise can be difficult to regulate in giant breeds.

Since you need to minimize their exercise, young Cane Corsos can be very rambunctious. They will romp with uncoordinated gawkiness all over your house. You need to substitute extra quantities of companionship and supervision during this trying time. Otherwise your young mastiff will become bored and destructive and his powerful jaws can literally destroy your living room.

To teach your Cane Corso to listen to you, "Respect Training" is mandatory. My Cane Corso Training article discusses the program you need.

Frankly, most Cane Corsos are "too much dog" for the average household. Very few people really have the ability to manage this breed.

One of the finest hotels I have ever stayed in, if not the finest. Service is impeccable, the hotel immaculate and the views breathtaking. There are few, if any, places like it. We will be going back.

K.J.P. — Hong Kong ▪ Stayed at the hotel in July 2017

Villa d'Este was absolutely wonderful for our family! We loved the lakefront view, the floating pool, the kayak/paddle boarding opportunities, and the overall ambience. What made it all come together was the quality of the staff - service was wonderful. Waiters offered our seven year old daughters Nutella crepes and everyone was so warm and welcoming. Our grandparents also had a very peaceful time made possible by the hotel.

S.K. — Kuwait ▪ Stayed at the hotel in July 2017

Our stay was enchanting. Villa D'este is the most beautiful hotel we ever stayed in. Thank you.

D.K. — Kuwait ▪ Stayed at the hotel in July 2017

I have traveled this world and stayed in many hotels, Villa D'Este is the best so far and I will come back again & again.

G.S. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2017

It was the first time that we were attending a palace of this category. We were absolutely delighted and enchanted by the site (environment and hotel) and a wonderful welcome. We have tasted excellence!

L.Q. — United States ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2017

Villa D'Este was the nicest hotel we have ever visited. Our stay was terrific. We can not wait to return. The concierge at the hotel was extremely helpful locating our lost luggage. The service was excellent in every way.

F.C. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2017

A palace in every sense of the word.

P.B. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2017

Perfect, a quiet and charming place where you can't help but feel at peace.

S.F. — Germany ▪ Stayed at the hotel in April 2017

This is - besides its beauty - one of the most remarkable hotels in Europe, in its service as well as in its overall appearance. It is well worth a visit.

P.R. — United Kingdom ▪ Stayed at the hotel in April 2017

It was one of most beautiful places I have ever stayed in. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful, we had the most magical time and would definitely go back again. I couldn't be more happy with the time spent at the Villa d'Este. It was truly the best.

A.A. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in November 2016

The Villa d’Este experience is hard to summarise in a few words. Is the setting beautiful? Of course, is the service good? Well, that depends, merely calling this, “service”, is inappropriate. What it is, is an omniscient presence (but never overbearing) of incredible kindness and professionalism. If you need proof that hotellerie is an art form- and I refer to all levels of staff for this-, look no further than the Villa d’Este. The experience this hotel creates is the very definition of luxury. The restaurant is magnificent and we’re very grateful for the particular attention that was given to us for our wedding anniversary, which was our main reason for visiting this wonderful establishment. Of course, nothing is perfect, so naturally I am sure you’re expecting one bit of criticism…. And there’s none. Perfection is of this world, and it is at the Villa D’Este.

G.M. — United Kingdom ▪ Stayed at the hotel in October 2016

A great hotel made special by it's unique setting and grounds. The courtesy and efficiency of the staff was excellent as was the food and service in the restaurant, grill and terraces.

S.A. — United Kingdom ▪ Stayed at the hotel in October 2016

A fabulous hotel in the most beautiful setting. We had a very relaxing few days and will come back.

J.P. — Belgium ▪ Stayed at the hotel in September 2016

I had an excellent stay. The hotel is very refined, and shows a kind of attention to detail that you can only find in a luxury Italian hotel. Only one criticism: no coffee machine in my room.

G.L. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2016

Among the best hotels in the world. This luxury hotel has managed to conserve its soul throughout the years, while providing all the comforts of modern luxury.

A.S. — United Kingdom ▪ Stayed at the hotel in June 2016

I stayed there with my wife and small children in the late 70’s a very long time ago! This time, I came with wife and son with his wife and two small children. Our stay was delightful, and the refurbishment was excellent! I recommend this hotel to all my friends.

T.S. — United States ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2016

I had one night stay only. Unfortunately there were no availability in the hotel for a longer stay. This is my first visit to Villa D'Este and it the most exclusive. I came here to celebrate my Birthday and had last night the most amazing dinner at the Veranda restaurant and service. Everything was just right in our service - not too much, not too little. Just right. Our waiter was most attentive, his professionalism was beyond expectations. He even asked a piano player at the Bar to play Happy Birthday song when he served us a candle and desert. I was touched to tears. The stay was splendid and I looking forward to spend many more Birthdays at Villa D'Este.

Y.S.O. — Singapore ▪ Stayed at the hotel in April 2016

It's a wonderful hotel and one that I would wholeheartedly recommend. The property is beautiful, interesting and the people are wonderful there.

C.D.M. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2015

I've been a regular for 20 years and the Villa d'Este has always been perfect.

C.C. — Australia ▪ Stayed at the hotel in June 2015

Best hotel we have ever stayed at. This was our third visit and it did not disappoint.

F.M. — United Arab Emirates ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2015

The hotel is superb in an amazing location. Loved the location, our room in Queen's building and the terrace which gave a wonderful view. The water in the pool was so cold it was difficult to catch one's breath to swim. High standard of service from all staff. I loved the breakfast - all my favourite breakfast items were there - and especially on the day we had breakfast on the terrace. However, the Verandah dinner menu is, for our taste, too rich and heavy and we would have liked to see some simple, light and healthy dishes as well. Ice cream - my favourite food - delicious! For our final lunch on the terrace we requested simpler food and the chef had no problem meeting our requests - my penne all vodka was superb. Next time we will always request some simpler dishes when dining in Verandah. The hotel was very busy as there was a wedding on Saturday. Loved the jogging trail. Easy walk to Cernobbio for shopping/ferry if we wanted to use public transport and boat not available at hotel. Looking forward to our next visit.

E.F. — Australia ▪ Stayed at the hotel in May 2015

We had a wonderful experience at Villa D'Este. Apart from the luxurious environment we received efficient and friendly service. Amazing attention to detail in all aspects of the hotel and the beautifully maintained gardens.

D.S. — Luxembourg ▪ Stayed at the hotel in April 2015

Perfect hôtel, simply fantastic. Devoted and qualified staff. I will highly recommend.

R.M. — Brazil ▪ Stayed at the hotel in April 2015

Wonderfull hotel! Just perfect!

F.B. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in September 2014

A well managed establishment clean, efficient, and always available for guests. A magical place with highly trained staff, joyous atmosphere. A great time!!

R.G. — United States ▪ Stayed at the hotel in September 2014

From the moment we arrived from the airport we felt welcomed when the GM met us as we exited the car. Each day that passed we more impressed and spoke, not about if we would ever return, but instead, how soon we would be back to stay at the Villa de'Este

W.B. — Switzerland ▪ Stayed at the hotel in September 2014

Gret location, excellent service.

M.P. — Belgium ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2014

Outstanding! Unforgettable memory.

G.D. — Netherlands ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2014

Beautiful hotel. Breakfast could be better. Our room (101) was a bit noisy.

T.J. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2014

Excellent, but pricey

M.S.D.G. — Brazil ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2014

One of the best places in the world.

K.S. — Spain ▪ Stayed at the hotel in June 2014

It is a fabulous hotel in magnificent surroundings. Very expensive!

S.Y.L. — Singapore ▪ Stayed at the hotel in April 2014

Great all round. Excellent. I will definitely return again.

A.A. — Qatar ▪ Stayed at the hotel in March 2014

Villa d'Este is one of the best in all over the world. I liked the atmosphere and this luxury hotel. The staff was vey helpful. If you would like to have a memorable time just stay there. I didn't like the lack of the close walking attractions .

S.G. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in March 2014

I was expecting a more personalized and refined experience for a romantic weekend. A little disappointed by the closure of restaurants because of the very recent reopening of the hotel. I chose a suite with lake view but the interior was a little disappointing for me. The place remains fabulous but below my expectations for this type of stay. We asked the hotel concierge to book us a romantic restaurant and found ourselves in a business restaurant ! Luckily the food was delicious!

P.D. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in August 2013

We did have a wonderful stay in your hotel with a great party ending with fireworks of great quality.

M.A. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in July 2013

Fantastic hotel ! Probably one of the finest in the world by the combination of the site, the quality of the hotel and the remarkably trained staff. It will definitely come again

P.L. — France ▪ Stayed at the hotel in July 2013

To access the restaurant Veranda a jacket and tie is required for gentlemen: I find it retrograde and from another age ! You deprive yourself wanting to keep this snobbery. it is certainly not a client's request especially in the summer with 30 ° C. Please adjust your standards!

M.P. — Australia ▪ Stayed at the hotel in June 2013

We had a wonderful time during our stay and would return at the first opportunity. Brilliant hotel. Service was outstanding.
