Bagle Hound

Basset Hound / Beagle Mixed Breed Dogs

Information and Pictures

Leo the Bagle Hound (Basset Hound / Beagle mix) at 6 years old

Description

The Bagle Hound is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Beagle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Arlo the Bagle Hound at 4 months old—"Arlo has been an amazing puppy so far and I can't wait to see what the future holds with him. He is really sweet, has his moments of being pretty hyper and loves exploring. He also loves to climb. He is very, very social, loves people and other animals, and is very affectionate towards kids. I will say this pup was easier to train then we were expecting with the stories of Beagles being stubborn. He is stubborn but picks up things really fast. He is also incredibly smart."

"A friend found a pregnant Basset Hound and took her to a Basset rescue. We all agreed to take the pups which were half Beagle. I got Buster as a gift for my husband. My husband is a diabetic and as his disease progressed Buster's sense of smell increased. If there's a change in my husband's chemistry Buster will sense it and notify my husband. If my husband passes out Buster will nudge and pull on him to wake him and get him to check his sugar. If he's sick he stays right with him. Buster is an awesome dog who retains the hound characteristics of walking nose down, sniffing the air and chasing rabbits and letting loose a big bark!"

"This is my little Bagle, Zo-Wee, a Beagle and Basset Hound mix. Zo-Wee has more personality than some people I know. This picture shows her at 6 years old. Her colors aren't as pronounced in her face as they were when she was younger. She weighs 28 pounds and has bursts of boundless energy followed by hours of snoozing. She talks about everything and sometimes wears a citronella collar because her enthusiasm can be a bit loud. Throughout her life she's had excellent health, but like Basset Hounds, requires frequent ear cleaning. She's the sweetest dog I've ever known!"

Roy the Bagle (Beagle / Basset Hound mix)—"Roy (a.k.a. No Brainer; Jumbo Frank; Low Rider and Limo [because he's stretched]) is a Cinderella story. This is Roy receiving his Outstanding Achievement Award for attending THIRTY car shows between April, 2011 and April, 2014. The presentation took place at the Horseless Carriage Club of Missouri's 53rd Annual Concours d'Elegance in Forest Park. He was a rescue dog from the Monroe County Humane Society and had been part of an adoption event held at a car show in Columbia, IL. His name was Rory, but my wife had a hard time with the second R so she just called him Roy. He soon took on some appropriate nicknames and has been our mascot for the Take A Kid To A Car Show program started many years ago by SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Market Association in Diamond Bar, CA. The ladies say he is "beautiful" and he sometimes wears an infant T that bears the message "I'm a Chick Magnet". In the past four years, Roy has been to over 40 car shows with my foster grandsons and me. In typical basset manner, he is a lover boy all the way. extremely affectionate and gentle. He loves everyone, especially children. I like to say his two favorite things are cheeseburgers and children."

Roy the Bagle (Beagle / Basset Hound mix)—"TKCS volunteer and foster grandson Luis Hernandez takes a selfie with Roy. One of my all time favorite pictures. It reminds me of the famous quote by Josh Billings, "A dog is the only thing that loves you more than he loves himself".

Roy the Bagle (Beagle / Basset Hound mix)— "Mamma was feeling a bit under the weather, but Roy's loving ways put a smile on her face."

Roy the Bagle (Beagle / Basset Hound mix)— "Roy's first car show at Ranken Technical College, April 17, 2011. Getting to know Roy is Olivia."

Bagle Hound

The Bagle Hound is a mix of the Beagle and a Basset Hound and has a lifespan of ten to fifteen years. He is an average sized dog known for being social, playful, loyal and quite intelligent. They have the nose like any hound and can follow a scent for miles. This means you cannot take them off leash when going for walk or to the dog park, or anywhere! If they catch the scent of something they want to follow, which they will, they will be off after leaving you in the dust!

Where does the Bagle Hound come from?

Usually they have a fairly even mix between their parent breeds but this cannot be guaranteed and which way they might lean in terms of looks and temperament is something only mother nature controls. Therefore the best way to get a feel for the Bagle Hound is to know a little about the stock they come from.

The Basset Hound

Originally bred in France the Basset Hound (Basset meaning low referring to how low to the ground his body is) they can be traced back to the 16th century. They were used as hunting dogs as they could track prey especially hare and rabbit under brush so well. Today they are mild mannered dogs, very laid back and gets along with children, other dogs and other animals. He is still alert enough to nark when an intruder enters the home so makes a good watch dog. He is pretty stubborn making him hard to train though his love of food can be a way to get him through it! He is not good being left alone because he is very much a pack dog.

The Beagle

Beagle like dogs can be traced back to Roman times but the actual Beagle we know today cannot be traced back that far and actually his history is a little muddled. In the mid 1800s you can see the starting of the Beagle we know today when they were bred for their hunting skills. Today the Beagle has a gentle nature and will often make you laugh with their antics, but will also make you cry from their mischief! They are tricky things that are good at not listening or obeying you. He loves to follow a scent and is great with children – they get up their mischief together!

Temperament

He is a curious friendly dog who will happily play with the kids, and also occasionally get up to mischief! He is very sociable and loves people around him. He has a cheerful nature and is intelligent but can have a stubbornness that emerges sometimes. He will be loyal to his owner and affectionate. They sometimes have an independent streak running through them but in general are attentive and lovely.

What does a Bagle Hound look like?

The Bagel Hound weighs 33 – 55 pounds and is 12 – 17 inches tall. He has a slightly longer body than most dogs but not as long as the Basset Hound from whom he gets it. He is a medium sized dog with a large skull, a square nuzzle and ears that are long and hang down. He has a muscular compact body like the Beagle and the coat is short and silky to touch. It comes in a range of colors including lemon, tricolor, orange, black, brown and white. He has a deep chest, their feet are like a Basset Hounds and their eyes are a little droopy.

Training and Exercise Needs

How active does he need to be?

They enjoy being active and playing so as well as a couple of medium to long walks a day include some play time at a dog park, let them have run in a medium to large yard making sure it is properly fenced in as if they get a scent they will dig their way out to follow it. They will happily play games with you and like to please their owners. Fetch, playing ball, and so on. They can track for miles without getting tired so do not let them off a leash when somewhere that is not enclosed. Even well trained Bagle Hounds will be hard pressed to ignore a scent just on your command. Take them for a run or jog, if you also go out for those for yourself. He will get bored if kept in all the time and this may lead to destructive behavior.

Is he easy to train?

It is important to train and socialize any dog from a young age to get the best out of them and to make both of your lives easier as he grows. Bagle Hounds can be harder to train than many other kinds of dogs, they seem to come with an attitude of yeah maybe later when told to do something! However they are fairly intelligent and they like to please, and they like food. Use those things, stay consistent and patient and avoid using harsh tones or punishments. Lots of treats to get him to obey you and persevere with it. Sometimes it may feel like it is not wort the effort but it really does make a huge difference in the kind of behavior you will see. If needed there are professional obedience schools you can take him to to get some help.

Living with a Bagle Hound

Grooming needs

He does not have very high grooming needs so if you want a dog that is low or low to mid low maintenance this may be the one. In terms of brushing one a week, maybe twice just to remove loose hairs as they are moderate shedding dogs so there will be some clean up to do on the furniture sometimes. He is not a good dog if you have allergies in the house. A bath can happen as needed being careful to use dog shampoos that do not strip natural oils from his coat. Because they like to be outside a lot you will need to check his coat once a week for ticks and so on but that can be done at the same time you brush him.

Also a weekly job is to check his ears and clean them wiping with a moist cloth. His nails will need trimming and it is up to you whether you carefully take on that job or leave it to a groomer. If you do take it on do not cut too low as you could hurt them and cause bleeding. He teeth also need to be cleaned each week.

How is he with kids and other pets?

These are such great family dogs. They are a great size so no knocking over of little ones to worry about and they have a great temperament and get along fantastically with kids, other pets and even cats!

General information

While he is only a medium sized dog and so you would think he could be in an apartment in fact he is only moderately suited to it due his need for space to play. He is also not the best dog to get is you want a watch dog. He lives best in moderate or warm climates not being good in either hot or cold extremes. He will bark occasionally and will need to be fed high quality dry dog food twice a day that adds up to 2½ to 3 cups.

Health Concerns

As with all mixed breeds they tend to be healthier and stronger and less prone to illnesses than pure breeds. There is the potential for some health issues that his parents may have given to him such as Epilepsy, ear and eye problems, weight problems, back problems and hip dysplasia.

Costs involved in owning a Bagle Hound

There are several factors that can affect the price of puppies which might drastically impact on the price you pay for a Bagle Hound. Things like low supply but high demand, age, the parents, health guarantees, unique coloring or desirable traits. Generally at the moment you can get a Bagle Hound for around $650. Then you need to pay for a create, a collar and leash, bedding, food bowls, micro chip, deworming and blood tests, neutering and so on. That would be another initial cost of something like $450-$500. Expect yearly expenses of $900-$1000 to cover essentials like licensing, medical check ups, shots, training, saving for medical emergencies or pet health insurance, food and other miscellaneous costs.

Looking for a Bagel Hound Puppy Name? Let select one from our list!

The Bagle Hound is a great family dog, super cat and kid friendly if you are prepared for some harder training. He will make you laugh with his antics, and possibly panic you more than once by running off to follow a scent if you do not keep him leashed when out in the open!

Beagle

Not only are Beagles excellent hunting dogs and loyal companions, they are also happy-go-lucky, funny, and—thanks to their pleading expression—cute. They were bred to hunt in packs, so they enjoy the company of other dogs and of people as well. Beagles love to follow their noses, which can sometimes get them into sticky situations. These dogs are solid, sturdy, and fairly easy to care for, but they do need to run around and let off steam.

Description

The Beagle is a sturdy, hardy little hound dog that looks like a miniature Foxhound. The body is squarely-built while the skull is fairly long and slightly domed. The square muzzle is straight and medium in length. The large eyes are brown or hazel and are set well apart. The wide, pendant ears are low set and long. The black nose is broad with full nostrils. The feet are round and firm. The tail is set moderately high and never curled over the back. The coat is of medium length, close, hard, sleek and easy to care for. Any hound-type of coloring is acceptable including lemon, tricolor, black and tan, red and white, orange and white or lemon and white, blue tick and red tick. Beagles have a distinct howl / bay of a bark when they are on the hunt. Video Clip of a Beagle's Baying Bark.

Temperament

The Beagle is loving, sweet and gentle, happy to see everyone, greeting them with a wagging tail. It is sociable, brave and intelligent. The Beagle is excellent with children and generally good with other dogs, but because of its hunting instincts, should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless socialized with cats and other household animals when young. Beagles have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. It is important you are this dog's pack leader and that you provide the proper amount of mental and physical exercise, including daily pack walks, to avoid separation anxiety. With enough exercise they will be calm. You can also purchase animal scents and play tracking games with your Beagle to help satisfy its instinct to track. The Beagle does not have a normal sounding bark, but rather a loud bay cry that almost sounds like a short howl. Beagles are curious and have a tendency to follow their noses. If they pick up a scent they may wander off and not even hear you calling them back, or care to listen, as they will be too busy trying to find the critter at the other end. Take care when letting them off leash that you are in a safe area. Beagles that are allowed to be pack leaders over their humans can develop a varying degree of behavior issues, including, but not limited to, guarding, obsessive barking, snapping, biting and destructive behaviors when left alone. These are not Beagle traits, but rather behaviors brought on by lack of leadership and/or exercise from their humans. The behaviors can be corrected when the dog’s instincts are met.

Height, Weight

Height: Males 14 - 16 inches (36 - 41cm) Females 13 - 15 inches (33 - 38cm)

There are two height classes, 13 - 15 inches (33 – 38 cm) and under 13 inches (33 cm).

Weight: Males 22 - 25 pounds (10 – 11 kg) Females 20 - 23 pounds (9 – 10 kg)

Health Problems

Some lines can be prone to epilepsy, heart disease, eye and back problems. Also prone to chondroplasia aka dwarfism (warped front legs, like a Basset's). See an example of chondroplasia in a dog. Prone to mast cell tumors.

Living Conditions

Beagles will do okay in an apartment if they get plenty of chances to be outdoors. They are very active indoors and a small yard will be sufficient.

Energetic and possessing great stamina, the Beagle needs plenty of exercise, including a brisk daily walk. It should have a fenced yard of reasonable size to romp in. Always use a lead when walking this breed or you will be running the risk of it disappearing in search of wild game.

Life Expectancy

About 12-15 years

Litter Size

2 - 14 puppies, average 7

The Beagle's smooth shorthaired coat is easy to look after. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and bathe with mild soap only when necessary. Dry shampoo occasionally. Be sure to check the ears carefully for signs of infection and keep the nails trimmed. This breed is an average shedder.

The first Beagles date back to the 1500s. English hunters would take packs of these dogs out on the hunt tracking rabbits, hare, pheasant, quail and other small animals. The breed probably originated as a cross between the Harrier and other types of English hounds. The dogs have since become one of the most popular breeds in the USA. The breed can hunt alone, in pairs or in packs. The name "Beagle" may have come from the French term "be’geule" which means “gape throat,” referring to the dogs baying voice. The name may also have come from the dog's size, stemming from the French word “beigh,” the Old English word “begele,” or perhaps the Celtic word “beag,” which all mean "small." He has also served as an excellent narcotics detection dog and makes a fine family companion. They were first recognized by the AKC in 1885.

A rescue group from Pennsylvania went there and brought many dogs to PA to find homes. I adopted him in Jan. 2017. He is sweet and stubborn. "Bella is a 9 year old Beagle. We keep her in shape by strictly limiting her diet to two measured feedings per day and plenty of exercise. She is a CKC TDX tracking dog and is going to trials for her UTD tracking soon. Some people say these little suckers are difficult to train, but they are extremely intelligent and as with any dog, you have to play to their strengths. With a Beagle it is their nose and their love of finding good smelling stuff. If you have a Beagle or want one. Just a bit of time and effort and I can assure you will tracking with her. "

Frank the Beagle is an example of an overweight dog. It is not healthy to let your dog get fat. Since humans have control over how much a dog eats and when, any dog who is overweight is the fault of the owners. To prolong your dogs life be sure to keep them fit.

"Gunner was one and a half years old when this picture was taken. He's a 23-lb purebred beagle. We found him at the Animal Rescue League when my boyfriend and I were looking for a friend for our Pit Bull, Lucy. He is a dominant dog and was difficult to train. Like all Beagles, he has a powerful nose and can be very stubborn at times. He was hard to handle until I started a daily schedule for him: an hour long walk in the morning, breakfast, nap time, playtime, another hour long walk in the afternoon, dinner, then rest time again. He went from making messes in the house, chewing up or eating our socks, and stealing our food to behaving at home as if he was a low energy dog. It seems annoying to change your schedule around for your dog, but it's a great feeling to know that you can help release your dog's energy while bonding with him or her on a morning walk. And the more I walk Gunner, the fewer socks I have to buy."

"This is Joey my Beagle with Chacha my cat. Joey is 4 months old in this picture and from the moment he was 7 weeks and we brought him home, he went after Chacha to play. He is a very friendly dog, stubborn but friendly. He cried the first night he came home and that was it, slept in his crate from the beginning. Dogbreedinfo.com has been essential since the moment I decided to get a dog, from selecting a breed and especially on How to walk your Dog, an article I constantly recommend."

"Joey always wants to be with his pack. He loves frozen carrots and all I need to distract him is to throw an ice cube on the floor. Great with kids and visitors. All and all, Joey is a real blessing. Thanks to this site I knew what to expect so I was ready when things happened, instead of getting frustrated it helped me appreciate Joey's growing steps."

"Layla, a purebred Beagle—she was 3 months old at the time, curious about why the wires from the computer monitor went into a mysterious hole in our computer desk. Her being the curious puppy she is, she stuck her head into there and she couldn't get out! Of course, this happened on the night of a huge blizzard in NY. We had to call the police to help us get her out. It took them nearly 45 minutes to get here when they are only located 5 minutes away! We tried everything from olive oil to just simply yanking her head out but her ears were too big to get her through. We ended up having to cut the desk open with an electric saw so we could at least get her free. Then, we had to call our friend who works as a nurse at a local vet to come get her head out. Sure enough, she got her head out in a heartbeat."

Wembly the Beagle shown here at 8 years old. He is a good bit overweight, which is hard on his joints, especially his knees. He is friendly and loves to hang out at doggie day care with all of his friends.

Beagle

Small, compact, and hardy, Beagles are active companions for kids and adults alike. Canines in this dog breed are merry and fun loving, but being hounds, they can also be stubborn and require patient, creative training techniques. Their noses guide them through life, and they’re never happier than when following an interesting scent. The Beagle originally was bred as a scenthound to track small game, mostly rabbits and hare. He is still used for this purpose in many countries, including the United States.

Breed Characteristics:

Contrary to popular belief, small size doesn't necessarily an apartment dog make — plenty of small dogs are too high-energy and yappy for life in a high-rise. Being quiet, low energy, fairly calm indoors, and polite with the other residents, are all good qualities in an apartment dog.

Some dogs are simply easier than others: they take to training better and are fairly easygoing. They're also resilient enough to bounce back from your mistakes or inconsistencies. Dogs who are highly sensitive, independent thinking, or assertive may be harder for a first-time owner to manage. You'll get your best match if you take your dog-owning experience into account as you choose your new pooch.

Some dogs will let a stern reprimand roll off their backs, while others take even a dirty look to heart. Low-sensitivity dogs, also called "easygoing," "tolerant," "resilient," and even "thick-skinned," can better handle a noisy, chaotic household, a louder or more assertive owner, and an inconsistent or variable routine. Do you have young kids, throw lots of dinner parties, play in a garage band, or lead a hectic life? Go with a low-sensitivity dog.

Some breeds bond very closely with their family and are more prone to worry or even panic when left alone by their owner. An anxious dog can be very destructive, barking, whining, chewing, and otherwise causing mayhem. These breeds do best when a family member is home during the day or if you can take the dog to work.

Breeds with very short coats and little or no undercoat or body fat, such as Greyhounds, are vulnerable to the cold. Dogs with a low cold tolerance need to live inside in cool climates and should have a jacket or sweater for chilly walks.

Dogs with thick, double coats are more vulnerable to overheating. So are breeds with short noses, like Bulldogs or Pugs, since they can't pant as well to cool themselves off. If you want a heat-sensitive breed, the dog will need to stay indoors with you on warm or humid days, and you'll need to be extra cautious about exercising your dog in the heat.

Some breeds are independent and aloof, even if they've been raised by the same person since puppyhood; others bond closely to one person and are indifferent to everyone else; and some shower the whole family with affection. Breed isn't the only factor that goes into affection levels; dogs who were raised inside a home with people around feel more comfortable with humans and bond more easily.

Being gentle with children, sturdy enough to handle the heavy-handed pets and hugs they can dish out, and having a blasé attitude toward running, screaming children are all traits that make a kid-friendly dog. You may be surprised by who's on that list: Fierce-looking Boxers are considered good with children, as are American Staffordshire Terriers (aka pit bulls). Small, delicate, and potentially snappy dogs such as Chihuahuas aren't so family-friendly.

**All dogs are individuals. Our ratings are generalizations, and they're not a guarantee of how any breed or individual dog will behave. Dogs from any breed can be good with children based on their past experiences, training on how to get along with kids, and personality. No matter what the breed or breed type, all dogs have strong jaws, sharp pointy teeth, and may bite in stressful circumstances. Young children and dogs of any breed should always be supervised by an adult and never left alone together, period.

Friendliness toward dogs and friendliness toward humans are two completely different things. Some dogs may attack or try to dominate other dogs even if they're love-bugs with people; others would rather play than fight; and some will turn tail and run. Breed isn't the only factor; dogs who lived with their littermates and mother until at least 6 to 8 weeks of age, and who spent lots of time playing with other dogs during puppyhood, are more likely to have good canine social skills.

Stranger-friendly dogs will greet guests with a wagging tail and a nuzzle; others are shy, indifferent, or even aggressive. However, no matter what the breed, a dog who was exposed to lots of different types, ages, sizes, and shapes of people as a puppy will respond better to strangers as an adult.

If you're going to share your home with a dog, you'll need to deal with some level of dog hair on your clothes and in your house. However, shedding does vary greatly among the breeds: Some dogs shed year-round, some "blow" seasonally -- produce a snowstorm of loose hair -- some do both, and some shed hardly at all. If you're a neatnik you'll need to either pick a low-shedding breed, or relax your standards.

Drool-prone dogs may drape ropes of slobber on your arm and leave big, wet spots on your clothes when they come over to say hello. If you've got a laid-back attitude toward slobber, fine; but if you're a neatnik, you may want to choose a dog who rates low in the drool department.

Some breeds are brush-and-go dogs; others require regular bathing, clipping, and other grooming just to stay clean and healthy. Consider whether you have the time and patience for a dog that needs a lot of grooming, or the money to pay someone else to do it.

Due to poor breeding practices, some breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, such as hip dysplasia. This doesn't mean that every dog of that breed will develop those diseases; it just means that they're at an increased risk. If you're buying a puppy, it's a good idea to find out which genetic illnesses are common to the breed you're interested in, so you can ask the breeder about the physical health of your potential pup's parents and other relatives.

Some breeds have hearty appetites and tend to put on weight easily. As in humans, being overweight can cause health problems in dogs. If you pick a breed that's prone to packing on pounds, you'll need to limit treats, make sure he gets enough exercise, and measure out his daily kibble in regular meals rather than leaving food out all the time.

Dogs come in all sizes, from the world's smallest pooch, the Chihuahua, to the towering Great Dane, how much space a dog takes up is a key factor in deciding if he is compatible with you and your living space. Large dog breeds might seem overpowering and intimidating but some of them are incredibly sweet! Take a look and find the right large dog for you!

Easy to train dogs are more adept at forming an association between a prompt (such as the word "sit"), an action (sitting), and a consequence (getting a treat) very quickly. Other dogs need more time, patience, and repetition during training. Many breeds are intelligent but approach training with a "What's in it for me?" attitude, in which case you'll need to use rewards and games to teach them to want to comply with your requests.

Dogs who were bred for jobs that require decision making, intelligence, and concentration, such as herding livestock, need to exercise their brains, just as dogs who were bred to run all day need to exercise their bodies. If they don't get the mental stimulation they need, they'll make their own work -- usually with projects you won't like, such as digging and chewing. Obedience training and interactive dog toys are good ways to give a dog a brain workout, as are dog sports and careers, such as agility and search and rescue.

Common in most breeds during puppyhood and in retriever breeds at all ages, mouthiness means a tendency to nip, chew, and play-bite (a soft, fairly painless bite that doesn't puncture the skin). Mouthy dogs are more likely to use their mouths to hold or "herd" their human family members, and they need training to learn that it's fine to gnaw on chew toys, but not on people. Mouthy breeds tend to really enjoy a game of fetch, as well as a good chew on a chew toy that's been stuffed with kibble and treats.

Some breeds sound off more often than others. When choosing a breed, think about how the dog vocalizes — with barks or howls — and how often. If you're considering a hound, would you find their trademark howls musical or maddening? If you're considering a watchdog, will a city full of suspicious "strangers" put him on permanent alert? Will the local wildlife literally drive your dog wild? Do you live in housing with noise restrictions? Do you have neighbors nearby?

Some breeds are more free-spirited than others. Nordic dogs such as Siberian Huskies were bred to range long distances, and given the chance, they'll take off after anything that catches their interest. And many hounds simply must follow their noses, or that bunny that just ran across the path, even if it means leaving you behind.

High-energy dogs are always ready and waiting for action. Originally bred to perform a canine job of some sort, such as retrieving game for hunters or herding livestock, they have the stamina to put in a full workday. They need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation, and they're more likely to spend time jumping, playing, and investigating any new sights and smells. Low-energy dogs are the canine equivalent of a couch potato, content to doze the day away. When picking a breed, consider your own activity level and lifestyle, and think about whether you'll find a frisky, energetic dog invigorating or annoying.

A vigorous dog may or may not be high-energy, but everything he does, he does with vigor: he strains on the leash (until you train him not to), tries to plow through obstacles, and even eats and drinks with great big gulps. These dynamos need lots of training to learn good manners, and may not be the best fit for a home with young kids or someone who's elderly or frail. A low-vigor dog, on the other hand, has a more subdued approach to life.

Some breeds do fine with a slow evening stroll around the block. Others need daily, vigorous exercise -- especially those that were originally bred for physically demanding jobs, such as herding or hunting. Without enough exercise, these breeds may put on weight and vent their pent-up energy in ways you don't like, such as barking, chewing, and digging. Breeds that need a lot of exercise are good for outdoorsy, active people, or those interested in training their dog to compete in a high-energy dog sport, such as agility.

Some dogs are perpetual puppies -- always begging for a game -- while others are more serious and sedate. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog.

Highlights

  • Beagles can be difficult to housetrain. Some people say it can take up to a year to fully housetrain some Beagles. Crate training is absolutely recommended.
  • Beagles can get bored if left alone in a house too long. If left in a backyard, Beagles will start finding ways to amuse themselves, usually by howling, digging, or trying to escape.
  • The most common reason Beagles are turned over to rescue groups is because either their owners or their owners' neighbors got tired of their baying. Be sure that you are prepared to work with your dog to control excessive barking and howling.
  • Beagles are targets for thieves who would steal them and perhaps sell them to research laboratories for use in experiments. Supervise your Beagle when he is outdoors and be sure to have him microchipped!
  • Since they are scenthounds, Beagles will wander off if they catch an enticing smell in the air. Their noses control their brains, and if they smell something interesting, nothing else exists in their world.
  • Although they are loving and gentle, Beagles can have an independent, stubborn streak. Obedience training is recommended, but be sure the instructor of the class understands hound personality and favors using food as a reward (which few Beagles can resist).
  • Do you remember how the famous cartoon Beagle Snoopy worried about his food bowl? Beagles are "chow hounds" and will overeat if given a chance. Monitor the amount of food you give them and be sure to keep your cupboards closed and your trashcans secured. Otherwise, your Beagle will sniff out the foods he likes the best.
  • In regards to food, your Beagle probably will take its food bowl pretty seriously. Teach children to respect your Beagle while it is eating, and not to approach it or tease it with food.
  • Beagles are not good protection or guard dogs because they're usually friendly to everyone they meet.

Beagle

MENTALITET

33-40 cm. for begge køn.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.

I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.

I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

You don't even accept what I have asked.

    Beagle hund

    The Look of a Beagle

Beagles look like small Foxhounds—solid, sturdy and muscular. A typical Beagle has a small, rounded skull with a square muzzle and wide nostrils. Their dark brown eyes have a “begging” look, and their pendant (hanging) ears are wide and long. Their tails are usually raised, but don’t curl over the back. Beagles are widely known for their tricolor coat (black, white and tan), but they can come in any hound color including red and white, yellow and white or orange and white.

What They Are Like to Live With

Beagles are happy, gentle, energetic dogs that fit in well with any family. They love to feel like “part of the group,” needing an ample amount of attention and playtime. They also love children, and vice versa, proving to be vigorous but gentle playmates.

Beagles are bursting with energy and stamina. Though they tend to have issues with other dogs, having another Beagle in the house—if you can stand all the happy wagging tails—can be a great source of fun and activity.

Protective of their environments without being aggressive with strangers, Beagles will bark until the cows come home if a suspicious person approaches the house, making them an excellent guard dog.

If you like dogs that talk, you’ll love Beagles. Instead of intelligible language, however, their sounds consist of “baying,” which is a kind of loud, gurgling howl. You’ll just have to get used to it.

    Things You Should Know

Beagles need regular exercise to maintain a healthy state of mind, and they shouldn’t be left alone for too long. They have also been known to steal food, whether from the garbage, the table or wherever they can find it.

Some Beagles can be stubborn and tough to train. They love being complimented and getting treats, but need a somewhat firm/friendly hand to learn the ways of the household.

Their incredible sense of smell is always working. This means that they may pick up a scent and follow it relentlessly. If you live in a house, make sure you have a fenced-in yard. During walks, always keep your Beagle on a leash.

A healthy Beagle can live as long as 15 years. Common health problems include epilepsy, eye problems and dwarfism. Be sure to clean your Beagle’s ears regularly to avoid ear infections.

    Beagle History

Though hunting hounds have thrived in England since the Roman occupation, Beagles probably appeared in the 18th century as a mixture of several hounds. Hunters found them handy as relentless chasers of foxes and rabbits. The breed standard was made in the 1860s, coming from a particularly good strain of Beagles, and in 1888 the National Beagle Club was formed to hold agility and obedience contests. Beagles to this day are celebrated hunters, sporting dogs and pets.
