5 Designer Doodle Dog Breeds

When you look past the Poodle's froufrou show coat, you'll see an easy-to-train brainiac with a sense of humor who gets along with kids and other pets. So what happens when you cross this versatile breed with another equally family-friendly and smart breed? You get a doodle dog!

But before you rush out to your nearest breeder to get a designer dog, do your homework and get to know the different kinds of doodles. Also understand that these hybrids are a bit of a wild card, genetically. If you breed a Poodle with a Poodle, you are likely to get a certain set of characteristics. With designer dogs, you never really quite know what personality traits or physical characteristics will surface in the dog you get. But one thing we can tell from these photos — they sure are cute!

Doodle Dogs Bring Oodles of Joy

Vidar Skauen, Animal Photography

Labradoodle

When you mix America's most popular dog the Lab with the Poodle you get a pup who is potentially sociable, friendly and extremely intuitive. The breed comes is three sizes: miniature (weighing 15 to 30 pounds), medium (30 to 45 pounds) and standard (45 to more than 100 pounds). But remember, crossbreed traits are not fixed, so there's no telling how much your puppy will end up weighing.

Aussiedoodle

Aussiedoodles are believed by some to be the doggie Einsteins of the canine world. Both Australian Shepherds and Poodles are extremely intelligent, which means that if the Aussiedoodle inherits those traits, its big brain can get easily bored. If he isn't busy doing a job of some sort, he will find a way to occupy his mind — even if it means destroying your living room in the process. Give this doodle plenty of socialization and training from a young age and he'll turn into a wonderful companion.

Robin Burkett, Animal Photography

Yes, this Schnauzer and Poodle crossbreed is more of an oodle than a doodle, but we won't let one missing letter exclude this adorable option. Schnoodles have the potential to combine the intelligence, boldness and friendliness of both breeds. This double dose of attentiveness could make him a great watchdog too.

Anita Peeples, Animal Photography

Goldendoodle

This dog is adorable. Often friendly and outgoing like a Golden Retriever and smart like a Poodle, the Goldendoodle can be a great family pet and can even be trained to be a fantastic guide dog. As with all designer breeds, however, Goldendoodles are often falsly marketed as hypoallergenic because of their curly coat. While there is a chance that those with allergies will be able to tolerate a curly-coated breed more easily than one with a flat coat, the hypoallergenic claim has never been scientifically proven. In fact, allergies are not caused by a specific coat type, but rather by the dander shed from the dog's fur.

Sherry Rupke from Swissridge Kennels

Bernedoodle

Created in 2004 by Sherry Rupke of Swissridge Kennels, the Bernedoodle is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Rupke says the Bernedoodle is fun, sociable and a great family dog, but stresses that Bernedoodles need to be trained and socialized from an early age. The Bernedoodle is just as happy playing fetch and jogging with you as he is curling up on the couch and snuggling.

(I alt ca 17 ugers ventetid)

Labradoodle

It’s not surprising that the Labradoodle has gained such popularity so quickly. Originally developed to be hypoallergenic guide dogs, the first planned crosses of Poodles and Labrador Retrievers were arranged by the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia. The result was a smart and sociable dog who not only possessed a nature appropriate for guide dogs but also had a low-shedding coat. While the hybrid is not yet achieving consistent results in coat or temperament, she is a wildly popular and affectionate dog.

See below for complete Labradoodle characteristics!

Breed Characteristics:

Contrary to popular belief, small size doesn't necessarily an apartment dog make — plenty of small dogs are too high-energy and yappy for life in a high-rise. Being quiet, low energy, fairly calm indoors, and polite with the other residents, are all good qualities in an apartment dog.

Some dogs are simply easier than others: they take to training better and are fairly easygoing. They're also resilient enough to bounce back from your mistakes or inconsistencies. Dogs who are highly sensitive, independent thinking, or assertive may be harder for a first-time owner to manage. You'll get your best match if you take your dog-owning experience into account as you choose your new pooch.

Some dogs will let a stern reprimand roll off their backs, while others take even a dirty look to heart. Low-sensitivity dogs, also called "easygoing," "tolerant," "resilient," and even "thick-skinned," can better handle a noisy, chaotic household, a louder or more assertive owner, and an inconsistent or variable routine. Do you have young kids, throw lots of dinner parties, play in a garage band, or lead a hectic life? Go with a low-sensitivity dog.

Some breeds bond very closely with their family and are more prone to worry or even panic when left alone by their owner. An anxious dog can be very destructive, barking, whining, chewing, and otherwise causing mayhem. These breeds do best when a family member is home during the day or if you can take the dog to work.

Breeds with very short coats and little or no undercoat or body fat, such as Greyhounds, are vulnerable to the cold. Dogs with a low cold tolerance need to live inside in cool climates and should have a jacket or sweater for chilly walks.

Dogs with thick, double coats are more vulnerable to overheating. So are breeds with short noses, like Bulldogs or Pugs, since they can't pant as well to cool themselves off. If you want a heat-sensitive breed, the dog will need to stay indoors with you on warm or humid days, and you'll need to be extra cautious about exercising your dog in the heat.

Some breeds are independent and aloof, even if they've been raised by the same person since puppyhood; others bond closely to one person and are indifferent to everyone else; and some shower the whole family with affection. Breed isn't the only factor that goes into affection levels; dogs who were raised inside a home with people around feel more comfortable with humans and bond more easily.

Being gentle with children, sturdy enough to handle the heavy-handed pets and hugs they can dish out, and having a blasé attitude toward running, screaming children are all traits that make a kid-friendly dog. You may be surprised by who's on that list: Fierce-looking Boxers are considered good with children, as are American Staffordshire Terriers (aka pit bulls). Small, delicate, and potentially snappy dogs such as Chihuahuas aren't so family-friendly.

**All dogs are individuals. Our ratings are generalizations, and they're not a guarantee of how any breed or individual dog will behave. Dogs from any breed can be good with children based on their past experiences, training on how to get along with kids, and personality. No matter what the breed or breed type, all dogs have strong jaws, sharp pointy teeth, and may bite in stressful circumstances. Young children and dogs of any breed should always be supervised by an adult and never left alone together, period.

Friendliness toward dogs and friendliness toward humans are two completely different things. Some dogs may attack or try to dominate other dogs even if they're love-bugs with people; others would rather play than fight; and some will turn tail and run. Breed isn't the only factor; dogs who lived with their littermates and mother until at least 6 to 8 weeks of age, and who spent lots of time playing with other dogs during puppyhood, are more likely to have good canine social skills.

Stranger-friendly dogs will greet guests with a wagging tail and a nuzzle; others are shy, indifferent, or even aggressive. However, no matter what the breed, a dog who was exposed to lots of different types, ages, sizes, and shapes of people as a puppy will respond better to strangers as an adult.

If you're going to share your home with a dog, you'll need to deal with some level of dog hair on your clothes and in your house. However, shedding does vary greatly among the breeds: Some dogs shed year-round, some "blow" seasonally -- produce a snowstorm of loose hair -- some do both, and some shed hardly at all. If you're a neatnik you'll need to either pick a low-shedding breed, or relax your standards.

Drool-prone dogs may drape ropes of slobber on your arm and leave big, wet spots on your clothes when they come over to say hello. If you've got a laid-back attitude toward slobber, fine; but if you're a neatnik, you may want to choose a dog who rates low in the drool department.

Some breeds are brush-and-go dogs; others require regular bathing, clipping, and other grooming just to stay clean and healthy. Consider whether you have the time and patience for a dog that needs a lot of grooming, or the money to pay someone else to do it.

Due to poor breeding practices, some breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, such as hip dysplasia. This doesn't mean that every dog of that breed will develop those diseases; it just means that they're at an increased risk. If you're buying a puppy, it's a good idea to find out which genetic illnesses are common to the breed you're interested in, so you can ask the breeder about the physical health of your potential pup's parents and other relatives.

Some breeds have hearty appetites and tend to put on weight easily. As in humans, being overweight can cause health problems in dogs. If you pick a breed that's prone to packing on pounds, you'll need to limit treats, make sure he gets enough exercise, and measure out his daily kibble in regular meals rather than leaving food out all the time.

Dogs come in all sizes, from the world's smallest pooch, the Chihuahua, to the towering Great Dane, how much space a dog takes up is a key factor in deciding if he is compatible with you and your living space. Large dog breeds might seem overpowering and intimidating but some of them are incredibly sweet! Take a look and find the right large dog for you!

Easy to train dogs are more adept at forming an association between a prompt (such as the word "sit"), an action (sitting), and a consequence (getting a treat) very quickly. Other dogs need more time, patience, and repetition during training. Many breeds are intelligent but approach training with a "What's in it for me?" attitude, in which case you'll need to use rewards and games to teach them to want to comply with your requests.

Dogs who were bred for jobs that require decision making, intelligence, and concentration, such as herding livestock, need to exercise their brains, just as dogs who were bred to run all day need to exercise their bodies. If they don't get the mental stimulation they need, they'll make their own work -- usually with projects you won't like, such as digging and chewing. Obedience training and interactive dog toys are good ways to give a dog a brain workout, as are dog sports and careers, such as agility and search and rescue.

Common in most breeds during puppyhood and in retriever breeds at all ages, mouthiness means a tendency to nip, chew, and play-bite (a soft, fairly painless bite that doesn't puncture the skin). Mouthy dogs are more likely to use their mouths to hold or "herd" their human family members, and they need training to learn that it's fine to gnaw on chew toys, but not on people. Mouthy breeds tend to really enjoy a game of fetch, as well as a good chew on a chew toy that's been stuffed with kibble and treats.

Some breeds sound off more often than others. When choosing a breed, think about how the dog vocalizes — with barks or howls — and how often. If you're considering a hound, would you find their trademark howls musical or maddening? If you're considering a watchdog, will a city full of suspicious "strangers" put him on permanent alert? Will the local wildlife literally drive your dog wild? Do you live in housing with noise restrictions? Do you have neighbors nearby?

Some breeds are more free-spirited than others. Nordic dogs such as Siberian Huskies were bred to range long distances, and given the chance, they'll take off after anything that catches their interest. And many hounds simply must follow their noses, or that bunny that just ran across the path, even if it means leaving you behind.

High-energy dogs are always ready and waiting for action. Originally bred to perform a canine job of some sort, such as retrieving game for hunters or herding livestock, they have the stamina to put in a full workday. They need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation, and they're more likely to spend time jumping, playing, and investigating any new sights and smells. Low-energy dogs are the canine equivalent of a couch potato, content to doze the day away. When picking a breed, consider your own activity level and lifestyle, and think about whether you'll find a frisky, energetic dog invigorating or annoying.

A vigorous dog may or may not be high-energy, but everything he does, he does with vigor: he strains on the leash (until you train him not to), tries to plow through obstacles, and even eats and drinks with great big gulps. These dynamos need lots of training to learn good manners, and may not be the best fit for a home with young kids or someone who's elderly or frail. A low-vigor dog, on the other hand, has a more subdued approach to life.

Some breeds do fine with a slow evening stroll around the block. Others need daily, vigorous exercise -- especially those that were originally bred for physically demanding jobs, such as herding or hunting. Without enough exercise, these breeds may put on weight and vent their pent-up energy in ways you don't like, such as barking, chewing, and digging. Breeds that need a lot of exercise are good for outdoorsy, active people, or those interested in training their dog to compete in a high-energy dog sport, such as agility.

Some dogs are perpetual puppies -- always begging for a game -- while others are more serious and sedate. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog.

Vital Stats:

Height: 1 foot, 9 inches to 2 feet tall at the shoulder

Weight: 50 to 65 pounds

Life Span: 12 to 14 years

Enjoying strong popularity in short order, this "designer" hybrid became well known quickly. Bred to be a hypoallergenic service dog, the Labradoodle went on to prove that she could also be a versatile family and therapy dog as well.

A Labradoodle is happiest when she's with the people she loves, and she'll shower her family with affection and devotion. With the energy of the Labrador Retriever and the work ethic of both the Lab and the Poodle, she's a joy. Thanks to the efforts of a handful of people, the Labradoodle may soon end up as one of the most popular breeds around.

A Labradoodle approaches life head-on at breakneck speed, and she approaches every new friend with the same enthusiasm. With training, however, you can teach your Labradoodle proper doggy etiquette. A Labradoodle is generally easy to train, since she's intelligent and eager to please. She usually does well with other dogs and pets in the household, and she is generally good with children--but she can be exuberant and may unintentionally injure a young child through sheer boisterousness. Overall, however, she makes an excellent pet for a first-time dog owner.

She can be calm and quiet while curled up on your feet, but she's also ready to jump up and play a game of fetch with only a moment's notice. She's not an ideal guard dog; although she will alert bark, she's more likely to invite an intruder in for tea on the good china.

While most aspects of Labradoodles are wonderful, many of the dogs are nowhere near what the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia intended, nor what the Association would consider using for a guide dog. The biggest problem with Labradoodles at this time is that there isn't enough consistency in offspring, no matter whether Poodles are bred to Labs or Labradoodles are bred to Labradoodles.

Among purebreds, there are certain characteristics that all of the dogs have in common, even accounting for individual personalities. (For example, you know that a Border Collie is going to herd something, anything.) But so far, even with multigenerational Labradoodles, that consistency is lacking. The hybrid's popularity has unfortunately added to the problem, because it has encouraged some careless or unethical breeding, particularly from irresponsible breeders who are not familiar with sound breeding practices.

Some Labradoodles are more like Poodles: smart, reserved, and quiet with a fine, high-maintenance coat that needs to be trimmed regularly. Poodles are excellent watchdogs, and some (but not all) Labradoodles are as well. Other Labradoodles are more like Labs: rowdy, slow to mature, and prone to shed as often as they breathe.

The coat is where one of this hybrid's greatest discrepancies turns up. The Labradoodle was meant to be nonshedding (like the Poodle), but it's still common to have more than one coat type, as well as variation in puppy sizes, within one litter. Some people with allergies have had to give up their Labradoodles because of the shedding, which is what they were trying to avoid in the first place.

Others end up taking care of a finely-textured Poodle coat, though they had bypassed a purebred Poodle to begin with because they didn't want to have to consistently trim, comb, and take care of that fine coat, with its tendency to mat and tangle.

If you're allergic to dogs, you'll still most likely be allergic to Labradoodles, or any of the Doodle mixes. Most people who have allergic reactions aren't allergic to the coat so much as to the dander, the bits of skin that come off the dog with the shed hair. The less shedding, the less dander that you can react to; but it's really an individual situation, particularly with the Labradoodle, where there's a variety of coat types. If this is a foremost concern for you, make sure your breeder understands that so she can help pick out the puppy who is least likely to shed.

Sadly, the hybrid's rapid popularity has already caused Labradoodles to show up in puppy mills and among irresponsible breeders. Puppy mills tend to sell sickly puppies with iffy temperaments. Irresponsible breeders hopping on the designer-dog bandwagon usually don't produce good puppies because they think breeding is just about simply finding two dogs of the same breed, when it's far more complicated than that.

Efforts have begun to curb this disturbing trend; several organizations now offer breeder referrals and are striving to promote multigenerational breeding. Just be aware that if you're going to pay the high purchase price of a Labradoodle (which is typically more than you'd pay for either a Poodle or a Lab), you want to do some research to get the best-bred dog possible.

Highlights

  • The Labradoodle results from Poodle to Labrador Retriever breedings. There has been some increase in multigenerational breeding (Labradoodle to Labradoodle), and also Labradoodle to Poodle or Labradoodle to Labrador Retriever breeding.
  • Although the Labradoodle is not a recognized breed, the International Australian Labradoodle Association, along with the Australian Labradoodle Association and the Australian Labradoodle Association of America, are taking steps to create a breed standard and unite breeders. You can find a responsible Labradoodle breeder, or links to one, by visiting the Australian Labradoodle Association of America website.
  • Labradoodles are playful and very loving with children, but they can be overexuberant and may knock down younger children unintentionally.
  • The Labradoodle has three different coat types; depending on which coat yours has, you can expect her to be a non- to average shedder. Usually the Labradoodle doesn't shed excessively, but the Hair coat type is the exception to this rule.
  • A Labradoodle needs one or two brushings per week, as well as regular grooming that includes ear cleaning and nail clipping.
  • The Labradoodle can be a high-energy dog. She requires about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day.
  • Labradoodles are intelligent and need to be mentally and physically stimulated. If they aren't, they can become destructive and hard to handle.
  • Labradoodles do well with other dogs and pets.
  • Apartments are not the ideal setting for this energetic dog.
  • First-time owners do well with the friendly and amenable Labradoodle.
  • To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Look for a reputable breeder who tests her breeding dogs to make sure they're free of genetic diseases that they might pass onto the puppies, and that they have sound temperaments.

The Labradoodle was originally developed in Australia to be a hypoallergenic guide dog. In 1989, Wally Conron, who was in charge of the breeding program for the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, conducted the first purposeful crossbreeding between a Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever

This first cross of Conron's produced a dog called Sultan, who not only had the hypoallergenic coat but also had the aptitude, intelligence, and personality to be an effective guide dog. Sultan went on to work with a woman in Hawaii and was a successful at his work. At that point, other breeders saw the merit of crossing these two breeds.

Like the Labrador Retriever parent, the Labradoodle quickly rose in popularity and has become one of the most sought-after "Doodle breeds." These dogs are often produced by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, but multigenerational breeding has begun in an attempt to produce a viable and recognizable breed.

Both the Australian Labradoodle Association and the International Australian Labradoodle Association are taking steps in this direction (there are no Labradoodle breed clubs in North America), and they hope to move this designer breed into registered breed status in the next few years. These groups have made great efforts to bring breeders together so that they're working to achieve the same standards through multigenerational breeding.

The Labradoodle comes in three size variations, depending on the size of the Poodle used for the first-generation breeding. The three sizes are Standard, Medium, and Miniature.

  • The Standard Labradoodle should be 22 to 24 inches in height for a male and 21 to 23 inches in height for a female, while both can range in weight from 50 to 65 pounds.
  • The Medium Labradoodle should be 18 to 20 inches high for a male and 17 to 19 inches high for a female, with both weighing from 30 to 45 pounds.
  • The average size for a Miniature Labradoodle is between 14 to 16 inches and 15 to 25 pounds.

Personality

The Labradoodle is an intelligent dog who can make the ideal family pet if properly trained. She is friendly and accepts and treats everyone like her best friend. She is devoted to her family and enjoys life as an energetic companion.

She can be gentle, but she can also be joyful, showing her happiness through exuberant jumping and playing. She also tends to be easygoing, since the Labradoodle was bred not to be aggressive. As is the case with any breed, some poorly bred ones aren't all that friendly, but a well-bred Labradoodle with a characteristic temperament is a true joy.

Temperament is affected by a number of factors, including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Choose the middle-of-the-road puppy, not the one who's beating up his littermates or the one who's hiding in the corner.

Always meet at least one of the parents--usually the mother is the one who's available--to ensure that they have nice temperaments that you're comfortable with. Meeting siblings or other relatives of the parents is also helpful for evaluating what a puppy will be like when she grows up.

Like every dog, the Labradoodle needs early socialization--exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences--when they're young. Socialization helps ensure that your Labradoodle puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog.

Enrolling her in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking her to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help her polish his social skills.

Labradoodles are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they're prone to certain health conditions. Not all Labradoodles will get any or all of these diseases, but it's important to be aware of them if you're considering this breed.

If you're buying a puppy, find a good breeder who will show you health clearances for both your puppy's parents. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition.

In Labradoodles, you should expect to see health clearances from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) for hip dysplasia (with a score of fair or better), elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and von Willebrand's disease; from Auburn University for thrombopathia; and from the Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) certifying that eyes are normal. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site (offa.org).

  • Ear Infections: These can plague Labradoodles because of their floppy ears. The ears trap moisture and should be regularly checked.
  • Hip Dysplasia: This is an inherited condition in which the thighbone doesn't fit snugly into the hip joint. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but others don't display outward signs of discomfort. (X-ray screening is the most certain way to diagnose the problem.) Either way, arthritis can develop as the dog ages. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred--so if you're buying a puppy, ask the breeder for proof that the parents have been tested for hip dysplasia and are free of problems.
  • Elbow Dysplasia: Similar to hip dysplasia, this is also a degenerative disease. It's believed to be caused by abnormal growth and development, which results in a malformed and weakned joint. The disease varies in severity: the dog could simpy develop arthritis, or he could become lame. Treatment includes surgery, weight management, medical management, and anti-inflammatory medication.
  • Epilepsy: This is a neurological condition that's often, but not always, inherited. It can cause mild or severe seizures that may show themselves as unusual behavior (such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding) or even by falling down, limbs rigid, and losing consciousness. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. It's important to take your dog to the vet for proper diagnosis (especially since seizures can have other causes) and treatment.
  • Allergies: Allergies are a common ailment in dogs, and the Labradoodle is no exception. There are three main types of allergies: food allergies, which are treated by eliminating certain foods from the dog's diet; contact allergies, which are caused by a reaction to a topical substance such as bedding, flea powders, dog shampoos, and other chemicals; and inhalant allergies, which are caused by airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, and mildew. Treatment varies according to the cause and may include dietary restrictions, medications, and environmental changes.
  • Diabetes Mellitus: This is a disorder in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. A diabetic dog will eat more food to try to compensate for the fact that glucose (sugar) isn't getting into her cells to burn for energy, because of improper levels of insulin in her body. But she'll lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Symptoms of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and the administration of insulin.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): This is a family of eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Early in the disease, affected dogs become night-blind; they lose sight during the day as the disease progresses. Many affected dogs adapt well to their limited or lost vision, as long as their surroundings remain the same.
  • Hypothyroidism: This is a disorder of the thyroid gland. It's thought to be responsible for conditions such as epilepsy, alopecia (hair loss), obesity, lethargy, hyperpigmentation, pyoderma, and other skin conditions. It is treated with medication and diet.

Labradoodles can adapt to just about any setting, but they're not recommended for apartments. They require about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day and would do better with a fenced yard in which to expel some energy. Some Labradoodles, especially in the first generation, can require even more exercise.

The Labradoodle makes an excellent jogging companion but also needs some time off-leash to burn off steam. In addition, she needs to be intellectually stimulated; she's smart and energetic, so if she becomes bored, she can become a destruction machine.

The Labradoodle is an intelligent and eager-to-please dog. Training should be easy as long as consistency and positive reinforcement are the methods. She can make a good companion for first-time dog owners since she doesn't need an overly firm hand. Socialize her from puppyhood, since she tends to hurl herself headlong into canine situations without regard to the feelings of other dogs. This can lead to some problems if the unknown dog is aggressive.

Despite her activity levels, a Labradoodle can adjust to living in suburban or city environments and can do well in rural settings. Although she is used for various working roles, she's a companion dog through and through, and she should live inside the house, not out in the yard. She's happiest living in the comforts of home, sleeping soundly on your feet or in a bed next to yours.

Crate training benefits every dog and is a kind way to ensure that your Labradoodle doesn't have accidents in the house or get into things she shouldn't. A crate is also a place where she can retreat for a nap. Crate training at a young age will help your Labradoodle accept confinement if she ever needs to be boarded or hospitalized.

Never stick your Labradoodle in a crate all day long, however. It's not a jail, and she shouldn't spend more than a few hours at a time in it except when she's sleeping at night. Labradoodles are people dogs, and they aren't meant to spend their lives locked up in a crate or kennel.

Recommended daily amount: 1 to 2.5 cups of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals.

NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on her size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they don't all need the same amount of food. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. The quality of dog food you buy also makes a difference--the better the dog food, the further it will go toward nourishing your dog and the less of it you'll need to shake into your dog's bowl.

Keep your Labradoodle in good shape by measuring her food and feeding her twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. If you're unsure whether she's overweight, give her the eye test and the hands-on test.

First, look down at her. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on her back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see her ribs without having to press hard. If you can't, she needs less food and more exercise.

Dividing your Labradoodle's food into two or more meals per day instead of a big bowl once a day can also lower her risk of gastric torsion, also known as bloat. The Labrador Retriever can suffer from this condition, and it's a trait that can be easily passed on to any Labradoodle offspring.

Coat Color And Grooming

Although a Labradoodle can have one of a range of coat types, the desired length is 4 to 6 inches. She has a single coat with hair ranging from straight to loose curls. The curls shouldn't be tight and the coat shouldn't be thick or fluffy.

There are three types of texture:

  • The Hair coat, which is similar to fur in shedding breeds, is the least popular. Hair coats shed and usually have a normal doggy odor. This coat is seen in first generations, although breeders try to avoid it.
  • The second texture, called a Wool coat, is dense and similar in feel to a lamb's wool, hence its descriptive name. Wool coats hang in loose curls and aren't dense. Generally, the Wool coat doesn't have a "doggy" odor and it's usually nonshedding.
  • The Fleece coat has a silky texture often described as an Angora goat texture. This coat ranges from straight to wavy.

Labradoodles are considered to be non- to low shedders, especially those with a Fleece or Wool coat. Hair coats tend to shed just as they do in other breeds, ranging from very low to average shedding.

The Labradoodle comes in a wide variety of colors. These can be gold, apricot, caramel, chalk (a chalky white), black, red, café, cream, silver, chocolate, parchment, and blue. They can also have parti-colored coats, which consist of brindles, phantom, patched, or sable colors.

Grooming requirements vary depending on the length and type of coat the dog has. Generally speaking, you can expect to brush a Labradoodle about once or twice per week. Some can be clipped or trimmed every six to eight weeks to keep the coat easy to maintain. A Labradoodle should only be bathed when necessary--which isn't often, as many of the coats don't have a noticeable doggy odor.

Like Labs, Labradoodles can be prone to ear infections, so take a little extra time caring for their ears. Dry and clean them after a swim, and check them once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection. Then wipe them out weekly with a cotton ball dampened with gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaner to prevent problems.

Brush your Labradoodle's teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath.

Trim nails once or twice a month if your dog doesn't wear them down naturally to prevent painful tears and other problems. If you can hear them clicking on the floor, they're too long. Dog toenails have blood vessels in them, and if you cut too far you can cause bleeding--and your dog may not cooperate the next time she sees the nail clippers come out. So, if you're not experienced trimming dog nails, ask a vet or groomer for pointers.

Begin accustoming your Labradoodle to being brushed and examined when she's a puppy. Handle her paws frequently--dogs are touchy about their feet--and look inside her mouth. Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you'll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and other handling when he's an adult.

As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early.

Children And Other Pets

The Labradoodle does well with children and can be an affectionate and gentle companion for any child. She can also be exuberant and might knock down smaller children, but she will love them with all her heart.

As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he's eating or sleeping or to try to take the dog's food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child.

Labradoodles usually get along well with other dogs and pets. Like most dogs, they need training and socialization for optimum success at living with and visiting other animals.

Rescue Groups

Labradoodles are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Labradoodles in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. If you don't see a rescue listed for your area, contact the national breed club or a local breed club and they can point you toward a Labradoodle rescue.

A Bordoodle is a cross of a Border Collie and Poodle. Adding Poodle to a Border Collie greatly reduces or even eliminates shedding. The Border Collie – Poodle cross is a great choice for people who fancy the attributes and intelligence of a Border Collie and want a non-shedding coat. The cross is also known as Border Collie Poodle mix, Borderpoo, Bordoodle, Borderdoodle, Poodle Border Collie hybrid. Any way you name it, the dogs are highly intelligent and great looking too!

We bred the worlds first litter of Mini Bordoodles in 2010 and since then we have become more and more impressed with the quality of this cross. We owned, bred and showed a very competitive line of Border Collies for the 10 years prior to becoming Doodle breeders. We absolutely love our Border Collies, but the shedding and the over the top drive to work all day was more than we wanted for our current lifestyle. Our Borderdoodle puppies are doing very well in agility, as service dogs and as fun loving pets. Feel free to contact us for more Bordoodle information. See our Facebook page for more Bordoodle pictures.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.

I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.

I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

You don't even accept what I have asked.

Blessed Day Doodles is a family owned, in home breeder of mini and medium AustralianВ Labradoodle Puppies and Goldendoodle Puppies. My husband Kyle, our three children, Isabella, Finnegan and Irelyn, and myself, Tera, live in Harrisonville, Missouri and have been breeding doodles since 2005. A few of our dogs live with amazing and carefully chosen guardian families so they can be part of a forever family and receive the love and attention every dog deserves.

    At Blessed Day Doodles we:

♥ Select parents from health tested lines who have also passed health testing.

♥ Make temperament a top priority in our parent dogs and the quality temperaments are passed on to their puppies.

♥ Whelp and raise our puppies in our home, NO KENNEL

♥ Make our puppies/dogs health, nutrition, and happiness a top priority.

♥ Strive to produce non-shedding, allergy friendly Australian Labradoodles and Mini Goldendoodles.

♥ Socialize and handle our puppies from birth and our three young children are an integral part of this daily process.

♥ Thank God for the creatures he has created for us to enjoy and are thankful for the blessing our dogs and puppies are to us every day!

The Australian Labradoodle is a hybrid between the poodle, labrador retriever, Irish water dog, curly coated retriever, and American and English cocker spaniel. The miniature goldendoodle is a hybrid between the poodle and golden retriever. They possess what is known as hybrid vigor, making them healthier than any of their parent breeds and reducing the risk of many breed specific diseases by adding differing breed genetics. We do health testing on our breeding dogs to prevent breeding unhealthy parents who would produce unhealthy puppies. We are more than happy to share the health test results of our dogs. We screen for hips, elbows, cardiac, and patella via OFA, eyes via PRA and CERF, and vWD via DNA or parentage.

Both labradoodles and goldendoodles are incredibly social and lovable. They love people, children and adults alike, as well as other animals. It would be a punishment to leave a doodle alone for long periods of time without human contact. We also encourage you to consider that dogs, like humans, are happiest with a mate, so in their case…another dog. For those times when you are gone longer than you’d like, it would be best for you to have two dogs so they can keep one another company, as well as play together and romp when you are home. We humans are great company but dogs are happiest with another canine companion. Our labradoodle puppies and goldendoodle puppies are intelligent, easily trainable, healthy, even tempered, loving, very little to no shedding, and would make the perfect furry family member.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

    Information and Pictures

Kaiser the black and white Bordoodle (Border Collie / Standard Poodle mix breed) at 3 years old—"This is my Border Collie x Standard Poodle dog named Kaiser. He has a fairly tolerant nature. He is very good with children of over four or so years, but he can be a bit nervous of younger, rough children! He has funny quirks like having his "crazy moments" when he runs around the house / garden for a few minutes like crazy barking and growling (playfully, not aggressively). He likes other dogs and is very playful with them. He is always wanting to meet new dogs and run around with them for as long as possible. He has a tendency to scare other dogs as if he sees them from a distance he sort of stalks them and lies down and slowly shuffles forward and then a few meters away he madly runs up to them, which can alarm some dogs."

    Description

The Bordoodle is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Border Collie and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Kaiser the black and white Bordoodle (Border Collie / Standard Poodle mix breed) at 3 years old—"Kaiser loves long walks, the longer the better. He can come back from a walk, lie down for five minutes and then be ready for another! His dislikes would be water, if a ball is thrown in then he will go in for a swim to fetch it, but he definitely wouldn't go in out of choice. Another one of his dislikes would be vacuum cleaners and ironing boards. He has been scared of these since we got him and nothing seems to get him to calm down around them. His final dislike is the car/traveling. He whines and if he's in the car for more than ten minutes he is sick several times. His bad habits would be that he isn't always very good at coming back. He tends to have a "can't be bothered" attitude if we call him to go back on the lead and walks over very slowly, he does always come back though, just sometimes it takes a long time. Another bad habit is that he picks up bad habits very quickly. He once barked at a lorry and my sister laughed about it and now every time we walk past something big such as a lorry or tractor he thinks it's appropriate to bark at it."

"Kaiser's good habits would be that he is very clever and learns new tricks very quickly. He is very out going and is fairly tolerant of smaller animals such as guinea pigs etc, but not cats! He needs at least one long walk a day otherwise he gets sad and goes a bit crazy indoors all day. A long walk being of at least an hour. You would also think being that he is half Poodle that he wouldn't moult. This however is not true and we need to vacuum every day despite being told that he "wouldn't moult". But we don't mind anyway. He is about the same height of an average Labrador and weighs about 50 pounds(22 kg.). He has the brain of a Border Collie and definitely the ability. He is very fast, faster than any dog I've known and can keep up with someone doing at least 25mph on a bike."

"This is Woody. His mum is a working Border Collie and his dad is a Standard Poodle. Woody is 10 weeks old in this picture and we have only had him for 4 days, yet in this short time he has shown a high level of intelligence, he can sit on command, give paw, has learnt "no" and has shown no real interest in our cat, Naldo, although Naldo has shown lots of interest in Woody! He has a very lovely, sweet nature and is excellent with our 10-year-old son Jack. He likes to play with his football and will nearly bring you back the ball on command. He loves sitting on your knee for cuddles and then falls fast asleep."

"Izzy was the runt from a Border Collie breeder’s first cross litter. Her mother is a blue merle Border Collie and her father a white Standard Poodle".

"We chose Izzy because of her timidity. We live in an apartment and own an art gallery. We wanted a dog that wasn’t too hyper and that would be polite to humans. For the first 6 weeks she would not walk out our front door on her own (we live on a main intersection in the city). Once she got to know the neighborhood her confidence soared. She LOVES other dogs and always wants to play. She is very gentle with small dogs but has a little trouble with big aggressive ones (bullies). Izzy is now 8 months and 45 pounds tall and thin. She doesn't shed yet (fingers crossed) and a relative with allergies has had no problems being around her."
