Die Beschwichtungssignale der Hunde
Das Buch "Calming Signals - Die Beschwichtigungssignale der Hunde" von Turid Rugaas ist vor allem Ersthundebesitzern und Hundefreunden, die in das Thema "Körpersprache von und unter Hunden" einsteigen möchten, sehr zu empfehlen. Obwohl der Titel bereits 2001 erschienen ist, ist das Thema nach wie vor aktuell. Die deutsche Übersetzung liest sich sehr leicht und flüssig. Sie umfasst etwa 100 Textseiten, die mit farbigen Abbildungen zu den wichtigsten Beschwichtigungssignalen ergänzt werden. Einsteigern empfehle ich zusätzlich die gleichnamige DVD anzusehen, da die Körpersprache des Hundes anhand kurzer Filmsequenzen wesentlich einprägsamer und verständlicher vermittelt werden kann, als anhand von Fotos.

Das Buch bedarf dringend einer Neuauflage. Mehr Bilder von besserer Qualität würden das Buch auflockern und den Inhalt besser veranschaulichen. Der Begriff Calming Signals, also Beschwichtigungssignale, ist etwas unglücklich gewählt, da er impliziert, dass diese Signale grundsätzlich bewusst angewandt und zur Kommunikation eingesetzt werden. Viele der sogenannten Beschwichtigungssignale sind aber autonome Reaktionen des Nervensystems, die der Hund nicht willentlich beeinflussen kann und die immer dann auftreten, wenn der Hund sich im Konflikt befindet, unabhängig davon, ob dieser Konflikt nun durch einen Menschen oder einen anderen Hund hervorgerufen wird.
Die Signale dienen also nicht immer der Beschwichtigung des Gegenübers, sondern zeigen grundsätzlich, dass der Hund sich im Konflikt mit seiner Umwelt befindet. Des Weiteren sollte die Autorin eindringlicher darauf hinweisen, dass die körpersprachlichen Signale des Hundes immer im Gesamtkontext betrachtet werden müssen.
Trotzdem möchte Ihnen dieses handliche Büchlein wärmstens empfehlen, denn es sensibilisiert Sie auf die Feinheiten der hündischen Körpersprache. Es lehrt Sie, wie Sie Ihre Beobachtungsgabe verbessern können. Dieses Standardwerk gehört in das Bücherregal eines jeden Hundebesitzers - ein echter, solider Easy Dogs Insidertipp!

Understanding Dog Calming Signals
Dogs can calm themselves and each other with certain types of body language

Dogs are social animals and have many different ways to communicate both what they need and what they're feeling. Not only do dogs use vocalization, but much like humans and other animals, they also use body language. Also known as displacement behaviors, so-called calming signals help dogs maintain a healthy social hierarchy and avoid fights with each other.
These ritualized signals assist in resolving conflicts among dogs without fur flying.
Dominant dogs use these gestures to demonstrate they mean no harm, and subordinate dogs use the same signals to appease the alpha dog, so it won’t mistakenly attack.
The 'Peacekeeping' Language of Dogs
Dogs and puppies also use calming signals on people when they feel threatened and need the person to feel calm. For instance, when your dog leaves a mess on the carpet, and you get upset, even though your puppy may not understand what he’s done wrong, he may appear to show guilt.
But he’s not actually feeling guilty; your dog is using appeasement and displacement behaviors to try to get you to stop yelling at him.
Some dog calming signals are obvious: they'll walk slowly or freeze when someone new approaches to show they're not threatening, or they'll bow (front legs extended) in front of a person they want to appease. Here are some other common signals dogs use to make interactions with humans more pleasant.
Why Dogs Avert Their Eyes
Among dogs, direct eye contact is considered threatening behavior. But a pet dog will look directly at a person. As long as his expression doesn't seem stressed or agitated, this is fine. If it's a dog you don't know, assume direct eye contact will be considered threatening.
If a dog is averting its eyes, especially if it's your dog or another dog who knows you well, this is signaling one of two things: Either the dog is nervous around you for some reason (perhaps it senses you're angry), or it's signaling submission.
When Dogs Approach on a Curve
Like avoiding eye contact, dogs won't approach another dog or human they don't know straight on. Instead, they'll walk in a curve, to indicate they are not aggressive and mean no harm. This is a behavior most humans don't usually observe, but curving, as it's called, is a very clear signal to other dogs that all is well.
Yawning Dogs Aren't Always Tired
Much like humans, dogs yawn when they're sleepy or fatigued. But dogs also yawn in social situations when they want to tell another dog (or a human) to calm down. If you encounter a new dog who seems nervous or uncertain around you, try yawning at them. Don't look the dog in the eye while doing so, as this will come across as aggressive (see above). You may notice the dog yawning in response once it feels at ease.
Nervous Dogs Lick Their Lips or Noses
When a dog licks its nose or the area around its mouth (dogs don't really have lips), it's trying to settle itself down.
This is a behavior you'll see if your dog is feeling uncomfortable or uncertain in a social situation, such as meeting a new dog or person. A human may take a deep breath to dispel butterflies in the stomach; when a dog feels similar mild anxiety, it will lick its nose before it proceeds.
What it Means When a Dog Wags Its Tail
Usually, we interpret tail-wagging as an indication that a dog is happy or content. This is true most of the time, but not always. If your dog is feeling nervous or submissive, he may hold his tail lower or tuck it between his back legs. He may still wag his tail in this position, but you'll notice it's wagging more rapidly than when he's merely showing contentment.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.
I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.
I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,
not a history of that country.

Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research
The aim of this study was to examine the occurrence of the appeasement signals “looking away” and “licking of lips” shown by healthy dogs toward strangers in a standardized behavioral test. The 116 participating dogs were aged at least 13 months and could be any breed. Dogs were guided by their owners through the behavioral test which included a variety of test situations. The people conducting the test were previously unknown to the dogs and behaved in a neutral, friendly, or threatening way depending on the test situation. This design allowed us to investigate interspecific communication with a focus on the chosen appeasement signals in different contexts. The expressive behavior of the tested dogs was evaluated based on video. We found that both signals, licking of lips and looking away, may serve as appeasement signals in dog–human communication. These signals were directed more often toward those conducting the test by dogs in threatening and conflict-ridden test situations. However, our results also show that the dogs responded with significantly fewer appeasement signals in the face of a major threat than in less threatening situations. A possible explanation may be that in the case of a major threat, these appeasement signals are no longer expedient, and the dogs select more promising behavioral strategies, such as clearly “submissive” behavior or escape. Furthermore, we found that licking of lips was a common component of the greeting behavior of dogs toward humans. This signal was observed significantly more often during active submission (i.e., friendly approach with submissive signals) than during sociopositive approaches. For this reason, lip licking may play the same role as in the intraspecific communication: as appeasement signal occurring with reduced interindividual distance and sent in advance to express peaceful intentions.

Between 2000 and 2002, legislation in Lower Saxony insinuated a special dangerousness of certain dog breeds, and controls were imposed on them. Exemption was only possible if the dogs passed a standardized temperament test. In a previous study, test results of 415 dogs belonging to breeds affected by the legislation were analyzed. Ninety-five percent of the dogs showed no indication of disturbed aggressive communication or aggressive behavior in inappropriate situations. Because a control group was not available at that time, these results referred to a comparison between the affected breeds. In this study, golden retrievers were tested and used as control group. Seventy golden retrievers were tested in the temperament test. The order of testing was: veterinary examination, learning test, situations of dog–human-, dog–environment-, and dog–dog-contact, and obedience. Levels of escalation in aggressive behavior were scored using a scale of 1–7. A total of 58.57% of the dogs did not show aggressive behavior (Scale 1). Forty percent displayed aggressive behavior referring to Scale 2, and 1.43% showed aggressive behavior referring to Scale 5. A total of 98.57% of the dogs reacted appropriately, and 1.43% displayed aggressive behavior in inappropriate situations. In the previous study, 95% of the animals reacted appropriately, whereas 5% displayed excessive aggressive communication or aggressive behavior in inappropriate situations. Comparing the results of golden retrievers and breeds affected by the legislation, no significant difference was found. A scientific basis for breed specific lists does not exist. Therefore, legislation in Lower Saxony was changed, and breed lists were withdrawn.
