Die Hunderasse Bracken - Hunderassen-Lexikon

Hunderassen-Lexikon: Schweizer Laufhund (Bild: www.schanz-fotodesign.de)

The separate hunting tasks might not be considered specific to the breed, but in spite of its stature a Teckel -if bred for hunting- ranks in all of these aspects close to the individual specialists. The size makes this breed into a manageable hunting dog, but more importantly, the vast adaptability to new situations creates only few limitations to this highly passionate and intelligent hunter.

Frequently a hunting Teckel in Europe is used for the entire hunt, from searching the live game to recovering the game after the shot.

One of the main hunting purposes of the Teckel is the hunt under ground (Baujagd). The name of the breed indicates what the breed was intended for: "Dachs" meaning badger and "Hund" dog. In the old days, German foresters used Teckels to reduce the predators (foxes and badgers) of small game the German royalty enjoyed to hunt (pheasants and hares). Teckels are still used to control the fox and badger populations in many European countries. Lately raccoon dogs (originated from Asia) and raccoons (imported from North America) are added to the list of quarry hunted with Teckels in Europe due to lack of natural enemies.

A highly valued trait of a hunting Teckel is the ability to systematically search an area, followed by trailing and flushing out game (" stöber n"). Stöbern is considered an innate trait which cannot be trained.

In Europe , the Teckel has been utilized in this setting mainly for roe deer and wild boar. The advantage of using a Teckel over larger hounds is that large game will not flee as swiftly and remain tighter on site. In wild boar hunting, smaller dogs are less likely to get fatally injured.

Being descendants of the Bracken, a required trait for the hunting Teckel is being loud on scent ("spurlaut"). This trait is tested on hares or foxes in Western Europe .

Subsequent to the Stöberarbeit, another trait inherited from the Bracken is to continue the pursuit into circling back the game to the starting point or to the hunter ("brackieren"). It is a testimony for endurance and perseverance.

The Teckel is also very capable of keeping larger game at bay ("stellen), applied mostly to wild boars, but occasionally also to deer. Often it is to keep wounded game at gunpoint in one location.

A German hunter usually starts with obedience training before taking his Teckel out on the first hunt. A large portion of the hunt tests therefore consists of hunting-related obedience tasks. Although the Teckel has the reputation of being stubborn and untrainable, many hunting Teckel are fully reliable in retrieving shot quarry out of dens or ducks out of the water. Due to this breed not being a true retriever, however, a soft mouth should not be expected, albeit some Teckels are very skilled retrievers.

Tracking injured game -mostly European roe deer and wild boars- is without a doubt one of the most applied hunting tasks of a European Teckel already through two centuries.

Like all Schweißhunde, Teckels were supposed to indicate the location of the dead deer, by barking continuously upon finding the game (“totverbellen”) or by guiding the hunter toward the game (“totverweisen”). These qualities are considered innate for Bracken, but because dogs in Europe are nowadays kept on leash during the entire game recovery, the traits are not tested or revealed as frequently anymore.

In this country the use of tracking dogs in recovering wounded deer has been progressively more recognized as part of ethical hunting.

    What are Certified Site Metrics?

Certified Site Metrics are metrics that are directly-measured from the website instead of estimated. The website owner has installed an Alexa Certify Code on the pages of their site and chosen to show the metrics publicly.

    • A more accurate Alexa Rank
    • A private metrics Dashboard for On-Site Analytics
    • The ability to publish unique visitor and pageview counts if desired

Certified Metrics are available with all Alexa Pro plans.

    What are Estimated Site Metrics?

Not all websites implement our on-site analytics and publish the results. For these sites, we show estimated metrics based on traffic patterns across the web as a whole. We identify these patterns by looking at the activity of millions of web users throughout the world, and using data normalization to correct for any biases.

The more traffic a site gets, the more data we have to calculate estimated metrics. Estimates are more reliable the closer a site is to being ranked #1. Global traffic ranks of 100,000+ are subject to large fluctuations and should be considered rough estimates.

If a site has Certified Metrics instead of estimated, that means its owner has installed code allowing us to directly measure their traffic. These metrics have a greater level of accuracy, no matter what the ranking.

For other sites, we display the estimated number of unique visitors from up to 6 countries, when sufficient data is available (Advanced plans only).

The audience geography data describes where visitors to this site over the past month are located, and how the site is ranked in popular countries. If a country is not listed, it is because Alexa does not have enough data for this site to rank/measure the site's popularity among that country's online population. Manuscripts of the 2 nd century by the Greek historians Flavius Arranius and Xenophon already mentioned dogs with remarkable noses (Canis segusius) used for hunting by the Segusians in ancient Europe.

This Gallic tribe was the earliest occupants of the territory at the confluence of the rivers Rhone and Saône in the Cottian Alps, and around the French city of Lyon (Lugdunum). The Segusians were famous hunters.

The Canis segusius had hanging ears with a facial expression "bearing a resemblance to street beggars". It has been speculated Germanic tribes and Romans got hold of these dogs, inducing a spread throughout Europe.

Over a course of many centuries, numerous other hunting dogs were developed from the ancient Celtic Canis segusius.

The book " Le Miroir de Ph é bus des Deduitz de la Chasse des Bestes Sauvaiges et des Oyseaux de Proie" provided the first detailed reports regarding the various dogs applied for different types of hunting in medieval France . The book was written by Gaston III, Count of Foix around 1388.

For hunting deer and wild boar, the author favored the "chiens courants", which were dogs giving tongue while in pursuit. Gaston Ph ébus wrote: "The "chiens courants" which hunt on all day long bawling and giving tongue, and shouting all sorts of insults in their language at the beast which they are after, these are the hounds for me and I hold to them before all other".

At that time, hunters were discovering the valuable application of tonguing dogs in hunting. It is believed that due to William the Conqueror, the "chiens courants" made their way across the Channel to England forming the genetic foundation for the British scent hounds.

The "chiens courants" were (are) called “Laufhunde” or “Bracken” by the German-speaking Europeans. Around the mid 16 th century, dogs were gradually more selected for specific hunting tasks.

At that time the Bracken were employed for three general types of hunting: the “Parforce hunt”, the “drive hunt”, and the “hunt on leash” (the search before the hunt and the search for wounded game).

In the Parforce hunt, a pack of Bracken is placed on a scent trail of a certain game. The Bracken trail the scent loudly, followed by hunters on horses for hours until the game is fatigued. This type of hunting was especially popular with the 17 th and 18 th century royalties. Packs of several hundreds of Bracken were not uncommon. An example of a Parforce hunt is the “chasse royale” in autocratic France . Parforce hunts are nowadays forbidden in many European countries.

At the drive hunt, the Bracken search, find, and pursue the game. The dogs drive the game toward the hunter, where the game is awaited with nets, weapons, or other dogs (lurchers and sighthounds).

With the improvement of firearms after the 16 th century, a new type of drive hunt is created, taking advantage of the preference of game returning to the original location. The pursuit on scent took place until the game fully circles back to the point of origin (“brackieren”).

Another group of Bracken were selected to search game, before and after the hunt. For further information p lease read under Game Recovery

Since the 17 th century German foresters, who were in charge of maintaining the hunting grounds for the royalty, selected and bred the smallest and most tenacious Bracken to reduce the number of foxes and badgers in underground dens. The meat of small game that were prey to these predators were favored and at that time less expensive than beef or lamb.

Prior to this period, there were drawings of small dogs used in badger, fox and otter hunting, and even in hunting beavers for the medicinal castoreum (anal sac oil) but these dogs only show vague resemblance to today's Dachshund or Teckel.

In 1719, Johann Friedrich Freiherr von Fleming published "Der vollkommene teutsche Jäger", a book containing drawings of the "Tachs Kriecher" with crooked front legs and "Tachs Krieger" with straight legs, that exhibit more likeness. Von Fleming wrote these dogs were traling and chasing the game while giving tongue, indicating the hidden game with diligence and zeal to the hunter, which separates these dogs from other hunting dogs.

Carl von Heppe (1751) commented in his book "Aufrichtiger Lehrprinz oder Praktische Abhandlung von dem Leithund, als dem Fundament der edlen hirschgerechten Jägeren" that there are Dachshunds with long and short legs, and others with straight and with crooked legs like seen in the Leithunde. This underlined that in those days, dogs were not selected and classified on the basis of phenotype but according to similarities in traits or functions. There were no breeds as we know now.

In his book "Der Hund in seinen Haupt- und Nebenrassen", Dr. H.G. Reichenbach (1836) first described the breed's external characteristics close to the modern Dachshund or Teckel.

Zur Belehrung und Unterhaltung für Jagdfreunde" (1848) the excellent nose and versatility of the Dachshund used in hunting. Ziegler also mentioned that due to its great nose, this courageous dog has very little problems to work on a leash as a blood tracking dog. He recommends also the use of the 'mongrels' of the Schweißhunde with the Dachshunds. Apparently at that time, the mixing of these 2 'breeds' already took place.

For more information about this topic please read the Game Recovery page.

In 1879 the first description of the breed was written in German. The phenotype (looks) of the dogs rather than the hunting application, became slowly more important in dictating the breed.

The German Dachshund Club (Deutscher Teckelklub or DTK) was founded by Klaus Graf Hahn and Major Emil Ilgner in 1888.

Two years later (1890) 54 shorthair Teckels were registered in the very first German pedigree book. These dogs could be considered as the foundation for the entire breed, even for the wirehair and longhair Dachshunds.

It was not until 1925 that the official German breed standard was published. For more information, please read The Breed

Black is the color that is no color at all.

When the Children’s League disbands, Ruby rises up as a leader and forms an unlikely allegiance with Liam’s brother, Cole, who has a volatile secret of his own. There are still thousands of other Psi kids suffering in government ”rehabilitation camps” all over the country. Freeing them–revealing the governments unspeakable abuses in the process–is the mission Ruby has claimed since her own escape from Thurmond, the worst camp in the country.

But not everyone is supportive of the plan Ruby and Cole craft to free the camps. As tensions rise, competing ideals threaten the mission to uncover the cause of IANN, the disease that killed most of America’s children and left Ruby and others with powers the government will kill to keep contained. With the fate of a generation in their hands, there is no room for error. One wrong move could be the spark that sets the world on fire.

The dream first made an appearance my second week at Thurmond, and it came to visit at least twice a month.

When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children-and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts-has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future-and who now wouldn’t recognize her.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam-and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart-she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

The Darkest Minds av Alexandra Bracken

    Nummer: 8724

    Författare: Alexandra Bracken

When the white noise went off, we were in the Garden, pulling weeds.

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government ”rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

But when the truth about Ruby’s abilities-the truth she’s hidden from everyone, even the camp authorities-comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. On the run, she joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp: Zu, a young girl haunted by her past; Chubs, a standoffish brainiac; and Liam, their fearless leader, who is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

While they journey to find the one safe haven left for kids like them-East River-they must evade their determined pursuers, including an organization that will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. But as they get closer to grasping the things they’ve dreamed of, Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

    The vets Conclusion

”I did not get the impression of RPED / cPRA When I first looked at the dog, But there is always a variation between individuals, Which makes odd diagnosis difficult (I can note absolutely rule out a primary pigmentepiteldefekt, but it is in cases of a different type than those predisposed to the classic cPRA-change). In the current situation, we find that there is an extensive cone-rod degeneration in both eyes on Spurt and that we can not exclude that this is a form of ”PRA”. Given that there is a serious change in his eye, I would not rule out that there is an inherited defect, and the presence of other related dogs with retinal degeneration contributing to fears that there is a hereditary disease. The closest we can get from what we know today is that it is a form of PRA. ”

The above is the short version of Prof B Ekestens exam. Unfortunately we do not know much more after that.

What we do know is that we have three cockers that in less than a year have had serious vision problems due to degenaration of the retina.

One is diagnosed cPRA / RPED, But the vet.panel was uncertain of the diagnosis, dogs were put down because of blindness in April 2009

One in 2009 was diagnosed General PRA, But DNA tested Normal/Clear for prcd-PRA. The bitch is now more or less blind.

Spurt is the third. ”some kind” of PRA. Heredity can not be excluded. DNA tested Normal/Clear. Spurt, 3 years of age, has in less than a year lost a great deal of his vision

Three cases of ”some kind of the PRA” in one year in a population with only 40-70 registered dogs per year …… There must be many cases around that could help us to understand what is going on

    Podenco, Greyhound & Galgo
