- förebyggande reaktion;
- starkt utvecklad territoriell instinkt.
- magert kött (nötkött, kalvkött);
- delvis biprodukter

Several years ago I was surprised that's a paradox in the breed world: loyalty to strangers is becoming more and more common for the breed. Well, at dog shows - you can not blame the dog because the dog id on someone else's territory, but when you come into the house where he lives - when you step inside and go in to wipe your feet on the carpet, then on the dog and proudly marshes directly across the courtyard to the entrance of the house itself, you begin to unconsciously think:" Thank GOD he at least doesn't bring you slippers". At shows they say a dog can not bite - No way, he will be disqualified! Foreign (European and American) dog show "expert" climbs into dogs mouths, pushes their lips and stuffs their hands into the mouth of a show dog, to check the teeth, glands and so on, while the dog. isn't even breathing!
Next, the judge is going to put on such a "champion" his medal. As he comes with his arm outstretched with a shiny medal hanging down, ready to be put around that broad chest, the dog backs off, hides behind his owner or pulls his head down, looks away and glues his tails to his hindquarters. No one says anything about such behavior. Because look at his BONE STRUCTURE! Look at the SIZE! Look at the HEAD! WOW! No one cares about the character anymore, in this ring, only the cover matters.
The titles will cover up any behavior. All you have to do is to brag about how many countries this dog won his freak shows and how big he is. No one will ever question his mentality.
And even more funny when people keep dozens of females together with dozens of males, in one pack, on one property. A dog who will become a nanny to anyone entering the yard! What a dream, but not for me. Not for any of the serious volkodav people in the breed. Who don't just want a big dog, but the rough, the hard and the independent side of a working dog. Alabai is meant to be aggressive, strong, independent with strong territorial instinct. Not a dog for everyone!
Looking at show dogs, we are getting farther away from the Alabai character. Now he has become just the "BIG DOG".
Owning a dog who doesn't live up to the original dog in body but most importantly, in SOUL, is a nonsense for me. I would much rather just keep a poster on my wall with that perfect looking dog, than owning a useless but pretty show champion.

Historical facts
In the ancient times, people grazed flocks around their homes on nearby pastures. At that time, dogs were used basically for protection of settlements and to a lesser extent, for grazing of live stock. In the beginning of the first century BC, however the situation changed and the era of cattlemen-nomads began. They used to take their flocks to the remote pastures and there, far from settlements, one could hardly survive without such friend, assistant, defender and body guard as a dog. As opposed to settlements where dogs were used only as guards, ancestors of the modern Turkmen Alabai dogs helped cattlemen graze sheep and protected both shepherds and their livestock from predators that lived in great amounts in the territory of modern Turkmenistan at that time. The Turkmen Alabai is a strong dog, modest in meal and capable of grazing the flock for a long time, protecting it from predators and at the same time managing to do with a piece of bread or a lap made of flour all day long. Cattlemen valued these qualities very much, for such a large dog, capable to fight a wolf, can do with so little food. Also, the Turkmen Alabai can easily stand sharp weather changes. Alabai dogs adapt both to very hot weather, +45 degrees Celsius in shade, and to high-mountain temperature, up to - 30 degrees Celsius. Another special feature inherent in the Turkmen Alabai is the ability to protect his master from snakes. Alabai grabs the snake and breaks her backbone with sharp strokes. The dog does so for a certain reason. If it holds the snake by the head, then other large snakes can twist around his neck and strangle him. These qualities make the Turkmen Alabai the true friend and body guard of a cattleman in his hard life. The VI century BC witnessed a wave of conquests by the Ahemenid kings. According to one legend, Kir I, the greatest of Ahemenid kings, was fed with dog’s milk. It means that dogs were held in great esteem and considered sacred. Then, there followed conquests of Alexander the Great, the times of the most hard fights and campaigns. In VI century, Central Asia was completely conquered by Turks who established their own state in 551 year. At that time, cattle breeding already advanced, a shepherd needed a loyal friend and dogs were treated favorably. The attitude toward dogs changed in VII century owing to the conquest of Central Asia by Arabs. Arabs brought in their culture and new faith – Islam. If fire worshippers considered dog a sacred animal, Islam regarded dogs as dirty animals and the attitude toward man’s true friends changed .Aggressive dogs were simply killed, only the most loyal to man and children dogs were left. This might be the reason that the Turkmen Alabai belongs only to one territory, he carries security service only at his territory and does not show aggression to people in the foreign territory. The history of Central Asia is replete with great conquests and campaigns of nomads. Basically, those were nomad tribes of cattlemen, and it is hard to imagine the cattleman’s life without a large security dog. Each tribe used to bring their true friends, dogs, with their flocks. But the life chooses the strongest, capable to survive in very difficult conditions. In the territory of modern Turkmenistan, the original breed of the dog called the Turkmen Alabai survived. The look of the man’s true friend has not changed over 5 thousand years, despite all hardships it had to overcome together with his master. The Turkmen Alabai retained its origin thanks to such qualities as modesty in meal, ability to do even with very poor food and without water for
a long time .Alabai has thick and impenetrable skin that cannot be torn up by teeth of opponents and damaged by various scratchy plants that grow in abundance in the territory of Turkmenistan, especially in sandy places. Alabai can fight a predator and, as a rule, beats the enemy. Alabai does not need daily training to master certain commands, as is the case with dogs of some other breeds. In contrast with them, the Turkmen Alabai learns in his young age from the mother how to graze the flock, fulfill guard duties, kill snakes, master fighting skills, bark at the approaching enemy. Nobody teaches Alabai specific commands, as to stay behind a sheep that strayed from the flock in the desert or in the mountains. Protection of property of his master, even at the expense of his own life, is natural for the dog. As one shepherd told us, his loyal Alabai stayed with a sheep that strayed from the flock for three days and died from thirst near her. The Turkmen Alabai is a loyal dog. Many modern breeds of dogs were bred artificially by the method of crossing different breeds, and their history is less than 200 years. They appeared as a result of people’s modern demands. However, it can happen that they may be no longer required in due time and will disappear as did other breeds that were not in demand and could not adapt to the new conditions of life and work. Time is the true judge in this regard, and the Turkmen Alabai, who passed his life test with credit, lasting for 5 thousand years, has proved it.
Many would-be dog breeders have no idea about implications of their experiments, trying to grow up the best breed by crossing Alabai with other breeds. They do not realize what harm they do to the breed that survived thanks to its unique qualities. True admirers of this breed are convinced that the best representative of Central Asian Ovcharka (САO) breed is Alabai. Archive documents, in which CAO breed was known as “the Turkmen sheepdog” until 1938 (since its best representatives were in Turkmenistan), is evidence of that.
There are legends about a shepherd who tried to breed large dogs crossing Alabai with a tiger. We still have laymen who claim that their dogs have the blood of a tiger or a leopard, not understanding absurdity of these words. It is impossible to cross-breed a cat and a dog and to expect offspring from them. We know some cases of free crossing of Alabai's and Tazis. Their offspring are called “Gayyn” (one should not confuse it with “Gytyk”, meaning sleek-haired). Such dogs were smaller than thoroughbred Alabai dogs and could not be regarded as successors of the breed. If "Gayyn” and Tazy crossed again, their offspring were called "Zannar", they were categorically denied further breeding. Also, there were examples of crossing dogs with a wolf. In this case, if the father was a dog and the mother was a wolf, the offspring were referred to as"Hunnush".Otherwise, offspring were named "Unnush". It is said that a puppy incorporates many qualities with mother’s milk. That is why some shepherds tried to hold offspring of a wolf and female Alabai, but they had many defects: a wolf has a weak waist and always falls down when contenders rise on back legs. Alabai has the thick and impenetrable skin, and this quality may be lost at mixing. Hybrids have weak nervous system. A wolf, by his nature, always hunted and stole live stock, and a wolfhound, on the contrary, protected flock and sheep. That is why their offspring with weak nervous system are unpredictable. They either are too aggressive or very coward and useless either for protection or for grazing livestock. All the more so, if we take into account that Alabai is stronger than a wolf, why spoil the breed? The main distinctive feature of the Turkmen Alabai is affection for men, especially children. On the contrary, a wolf is aggressive. Also, hybrids are unsuitable for contests between thoroughbred Turkmen Alabai dogs as they show and grind the teeth, which is inadmissible for Alabai. In the years of independence, against the background of the common process of reviving people’s spiritual and cultural heritage, unlimited and illegal export of valuable representatives of the breed, “Turkmen Alabai”, was stopped. In fact, new breeds of dogs can be raised by cross-breeding, and the breed with ancient history is very difficult to find. Alabai is a fearless dog that will not tremble before any enemy. To prove it, enthusiasts took Alabai nicknamed Ekemen (who proved himself good in test fights) to a zoo and brought him close to an open-air cage with a lion. It was hard to hold Ekemen, so furiously he tried to rush at the lion, denying claims that a dog, having put the tail between the legs, will escape only at hearing the terrible roar of the animals’ king. Despite the lion’s growl, Ekemen became even stronger in his fury. Finally, the lion got away, lied down and lifted upwards all his four paws (a defensive position) as if recognizing the dog’s superiority over the family of cats, because a lion is a cat too, yet the big one.
The Turkmen Alabai once again proved in practice that he will spare his life to protect his master .
One should be really proud of this masterpiece of nature!

How much excercising do alabai need?
Hello I fist want to introduce myself. I have been reading this forum for a while now. And I have been studeing lots of about molosser breeds. I was thinking of getting a Boz shepherd but then a farmer told me about the truth about the breed. So instead I have decided to get an alabai. I was thinking of getting a alabai in the spring. I need him for animal deterrent proposes. I have 4 acres of fenced and very secured chain link. We are also getting him to be a guardian for the family as well.
With 4 acres all to him self and property to guard from people and animals how much excersize would he need? I can give him 2 hours from the starting when he is a puppy plus socialization and training. That 2 hours includes the excersize only. I could when he is older and more developed give him 3 hours of excersize max. And of course on top of that I will spend interaction time with him and my family members too.
The reason why I am asking this is because it said for CAO care that it needs 3 90 min walks each. But I would think with 4 acres of land to protect he wouldn't need as much excersize as he would be exercizing himself from protecting the manor. But I plan to also use him pull weights when he gets older. Or did I get it a wrong did the CAO care sheet just mean owners that have an apartment need to take their dog for 3 90 min walks because they have no land?
Please answer this question as soon as possible.
On 4 fenced acres of land that he can run you would not need to actually get him any additional exercise. If he is outside at all times and have full run of the property to patrol he will get enough exercise. When the temperature is cold he will be very active. If it is hot he will sleep all day .. so on that kind of property don't worry about exercise unless you have him locked up in the house. Again, if he lives outside on 4 acres he will get enough exercise.
thank you so much. It is cold where I live so he will be active. Thank you.
I'm not quite sure what to get CAO, sarplaninac, or CO. I have owned large breed dogs before including, german shepherds, st. Bernard's, malamute. Which one would be most suitable for me? It gets cold here in alberta. But all these breeds can do fine in about any weather. But I live on four fenced acres and am having problems with both people and animals. Although my problems are mostly about wild animals. I don't necessarily need a lgd but need something strong enough to confront man and animal.
Tell me if these breeders are good?
They all say they are working animals which is what I am looking for. So which animal would be best for me? Are good working sarps just as formidable and good as workers as CO and CAO? Which one would be right for me?
The only one you listed who I would consider buying from is alabaiusa. However, I think you should check out RuskiIzvor. http://ruskiizvor.com/index.htm
Thanks for the post.
Our second pup should arrive this week. name is Pallada. photo in gallery by ruskizvir
Thank you - Ruskizvor has great Caucasian and Central Asian Ovcharkas.
Do u think they would ship to canada?
They are shipping mine to Houston, TX so I am sure shipping to Canada will not be a problem. Just contact Polina (ruskizvor) on here and she can tell you.
Best wishes for the new year.
Having that land and enough wild life entering your property the dog should have plenty of exercise. But this is just my opinion. Don't be so quick to get this dog. Do some more research on the breed and on the breeders before you make a purchase. You want to be as informed or educated as you can about the breed and breeders.
As far as shipping to Canada you need to talk to the airlines. They can tell you if a dog can be shipped. I know there was a problem with shipping live animals to Canada from the USA. I don't know if that is still in lace or not. I had some ask me about shipping to Canada. The airline said that was a temporary ban on shipping to Canada. I don't know why this was in place.
If you get a chance to visit some kennels you should do so. Find out if the breeders offer written health guarantees. Find out if they do OFA or PennHipp testing. Check out these places as thoroughly as you can. If they don't want to answer question then don't buy from them. I have talked to many breeders. Many will say they have working dogs or working lines and they have never done any training with their dogs. Many say the dog is show quality. But the breeder has never been to a show. they don't know what the judges are looking for in a dog. They just know that there is a champion in the bloodline. Every dog in a champion bloodline will not be a champion of record. Having one dog 3 or 4 generation back does qualify as a champion bloodline.
I have been doing as much research as possible on the alabai I will continue to do more. But from what I have read I think I have enough time and space for the dog. I do prefer them to be independent. That is what I like about them. I know this dog is a huge responsibility and a very serious dog.
If I get my dog from the USA I know people who can come and bring to canada for me in about 3 days.
Well in USA I highly recommend Maxomagic Central Asian Kennel at http://maxomagickennel.com
Talk to Steve Nash.
Well I have looked at their dogs very impressive. That is where I will be getting my dog. But before I talk to Steve Nash I will sit down and talk to my family and see if we are all at the same page. Although Ruskivor sure has nice animals too. It is ruskiver or maxomagic. I want to talk to my family and see if this dog would fit our needs.
Gsicard do u have any experience with Maxomagic? Are they good responsible breeders? Are there animals top quality as they seem to be? Do they still have the real CAO temp and working abilities? Do u think they are the best breeders in USA for CAO is that why you recommended them to me?
I have read their whole website they seem to be fantastic. i just want to check with someone who has experience with them.
Please call me Gary. It is good that you asked me that question. The answer is YES. I know them personally and they are my friends. They have the very best CAO you can find in the USA. The founders (Victoria Evans (r.i.p)) and Steven Nash were/are personal friends of mine. I can completely vouch for the dogs of Maxomagic and I will not for any other CAO breeder in the USA. Thanks for reading the website - I made it for them. :) Yes, they have true to temperament CAO of the best lines and quality breeding. You will be happy with their dogs.
If you want to buy from the American continent then choose Maxomagic
If you want to import then choose Ruski Izvor
Thankyou so much Gary.
Hello Gary I am deciding carefully whether to get a CO or a CAO. But if I choose a CO what breeder should I choose in North America? What breeder has the best possible working lines in North America? I have looked at some breeders and cant find some that would have good COs.
I have not found any breeders in the USA that I would buy from for various reasons. Some has great dogs but other issues. Some has no issues but crappy dogs, and there is a mixture of other politics and drama. SO, I buy my dogs from outside the USA. Not saying you would not be happy with a CO from someone in north America. But I would not so I don't buy. The choice however, is yours. I already made my recommendation. I can find other breeders for you but they would not be from North America at this time.
Could you do me a big favour and find me some nice breeders that have some nice dogs outside North America?
Awnser as soon as possible please Gary. But no rush.
Sorry was picking up my puppy at airport today. RUSKI IZVOR and Akmenu gele are highly recommended. More later
Just a couple pictures of Pallada. She got home on Friday and these were taken on Sunday after she was introduced to the others.
I agree. This also answers my question that I posted on one of the pictures.
I know that RuskiIzvor has fabulous dogs. But is there any other breeders asides from RuskiIzvor you would recommend? I just like to have as many options as possible and like to see more options in terms of CO breeders. And for shipping a dog from Europe to Canada how much would the total cost be, do you know?
I will only recommend breeders who i have had peronal experience with. So with that said, Rudki Izvor, Akmenu Gele, VBO Caucasians, Luca Bastiani, and should you need expert help and advice from a USA breeder you should cocnsider Caucasian Legend and speak with Yelena. Also check Thunderhawk Caucasians
Thank you for all of your help Gary it's Jett. I contacted maxomagic and we are getting a dog from them in April.
Thankyou for all of your help.
You are welcome. Your email from the site came to me also and i forwarded it to Steve.
You can't go wrong with a maxomagic Central Asian. They are the best.
One last question Gary. What should we do to prevent the dog for digging under the fence? Or what can we add to a 6 foot fence around 4 acres of chain link fence to prevent him from digging?
When I first receive my CAO pup about 2 months old how much excersize should he recieve? Because I wont be able to leave him outside by himself because we are going to make adgustments to the fencing and i am not going to risk my puppy getting hurt by leaving him outside. lSo Gary how much excersize should I give him when he is that age? Also I plan to go jogging with him and do weight pulling excersizes just so he can get in very good shape. But what age should I start this? Thanks Gary
Unfortunately we have to put a new fence up. Is 2 acres enough? Or should a little more be better or would 2 be good enough.
If someone with experience please awnser these quistions soon as possible?
2 acres is more than enough space for a any dog to get enough exercise. This is especially true if there are other people or animals that come by enough to get their attention.
How long, is too long of a walk for my 14 week old CAS Kyhoon?
your CAS will let you know.. probably sit or lay down and refuse to move any further.. that is the limit.. but you can work through it.
But if I take him for longer walks will it be okay for his joints?
Dogs like this require less exercise than probably any other type of dog. A couple of acres will do them fine.
However, yeah, LGDs are pretty unique in how much they are homebodies, they're the one dog you can get away with sitting out back on a couple of acres and leaving them to it.
Don't worry I have been excersicing him alot. I am just wondering since of his age it would be hard on his joints because he is growing?
1234: just avoid running too much on hard surfaces, if he is living in a wide fenced area there is no need for exercising. at 4 months if you want you an walk him for 20 minutes or play fetch for 10minutes you can do that 2-3 times a day. later at 6 months you can walk him longer. Volka is 9 months i take him for 45 minutes walk which includes some playing and running, then later during the day i take him for short 20 minutes walks. but because he lives in a house. soon i am moving to my summer house he will have a fenced area. when he gets older around 2 years you can then start some serious exercising with weight pulling etc.
but as said in this thread, if it is hot the dog will be sleeping all day..they are lazy by nature. and start obedience early and do not encourage play biting , this is a serious dog you dont want him to play biting as he gets older trust me. they grow very fast , so you have to control them early. Volka is now 9 months and 135 lbs 30+ inches at withers
Gilles, can you upload some new photos?
Why interesting? What do you think about all the comments?
I know of the breed. But I'm not that familiar with the breed and their characteristics. So hearing they will lay down or how you develop a pattern when they are young to get the dog conditioned to exercising more. Those are thing people need to know before they consider getting the breed. I'd imagine there are a number of people getting one and have no idea of what they are getting into.
Not just this breed but any and all breeds.
I just had a guy this past weekend ask me to provide a stud for his female. The dog has a crooked tail. It is too short for the breed. The teeth are worn down. The bite is not correct. He hasn't tested the dogs for any genetic health problems. It has never been evaluated by any qualified people as to whether or not it is breed quality. He said it was 4 years old and never bred. But the teats are too low not to have been bred. He don't have a pedigree on the dog. He said they only gave him the registration papers. I just happen to know the breeder. She is one of the most well know breeders of the Presa. I called her and when she didn't answer I sent her an email. She responded back and wanted the address of the guy so she could go and pick up the pup. She sold him the dog as pet quality. He didn't have papers, but somehow managed to get papers. She learned that the dog has been bred at least 4 times. I know she makes her customer' sign puppy contract and on pet quality dogs they must be spayed/neutered.
The guy is under the impression that his dog is special because when he walks the dog people stop hi and tell him how awesome his dog is. He asked why was I looking t the dogs teeth. He don't know what the bite should be for the breed. He asked how do you fix the bite?? How much would it cost? Really? He shouldn't own a dog IMO. He is in no way prepared to get the dog some help if there are complications when birthing.
Before I saw the dog I told him we needed to evaluate the dog to see if we would breed with her. He sent me a picture on a cell phone. I had to explain that we need to see it in person. The angulation was horrible. The gait was awful. I asked about OFA hip testing. He said the hips are good. He gives her calcium for her hips and joints. You should not give a presa calcium supplements when they are young. That could cause problem in their growth and lead to other problems. Maybe that is why the gait was bad?
He even mention that if we won't breed her he wanted me to give him someone that will. I know a number of other breeders. But I wouldn't send no one a dog like that to breed. But I did tell him he should contact the original breeder. She has more ma;es than we do. Hopefully he goes back thinking he can talk his way into getting her to help him. Then she can take custody back of that dog and make sure it never breeds again.
Gilles, can you upload some new photos?
sure desiree i will soon.
Intresting story Jamal! I just don't want to be over excersicing my dog because of his age that is all.
I understand about the concern for over exercising. I don't know if that can be done. I have yet to see a dog that got too much exercise. But I can see that if we overdo it it can lose the dog's interest.

Kangal Dog
Information and Pictures
Pascal the Turkish Kangal Dog at 2 years old lives in Turkey.
Other Names
- Kangal
- Karabash
- Turkish Kangal Dog
Description
The Kangal Dog is a large, powerful, heavy-boned dog, whose size and proportions have developed naturally as a result of its continued use in Turkey as a guardian against predators. The head is large and moderately wide with drop ears. A properly proportioned Kangal Dog is slightly longer (measured from prosternum to point of buttocks) than tall (measured from the withers to the ground), and length of the front leg (measured from point of elbow to the ground) should equal slightly more than one-half of the dog's height. The tail, which is typically curled, completes the distinctive silhouette. The Kangal Dog has a double coat that is moderately short and quite dense. The Kangal Dog has a black mask and black velvety ears which contrast with a whole-body color which may range from light dun to gray. Honorable scars or other evidences of injury resulting from working in the field are not to be penalized.
Temperament
The typical Kangal Dog is first and foremost a stock guardian dog and possesses a temperament typical of such dogs—alert, territorial and defensive of the domestic animals or the human family to which it has bonded. The Kangal Dog has the strength, the speed and the courage to intercept and confront threats to the flocks of sheep and goats that it guards in both Turkey and the New World. Kangal Dogs prefer to intimidate predators but will take a physical stand and even attack if necessary. Kangal Dogs have an instinctive wariness of strange dogs but are not typically belligerent toward people. They are somewhat reserved with strangers, but loyal and affectionate with family. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs, we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because adog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success.
Height, Weight
Height: Males 30 - 32 inches (77 - 86 cm) Females 28 - 30 inches (72 - 77 cm)
Weight: Males 110 - 145 pounds (50 - 66 kg) Females 90 - 120 pounds (41 - 54 kg)
Health Problems
Living Conditions
The Kangal Dog is not recommended for apartment life. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. The Kangal Dog is naturally protective, but is more "people oriented" than most other livestock guardian breeds. A well-socialized Kangal Dog is not generally aggressive to people, and especially loves children—but the breed does not recognize property boundaries. It will wander, attack stray dogs, and may be aggressive to human intruders, especially at night. Good fencing is therefore essential.
This breed needs exercise and mental stimulation. Working dogs with acreage will exercise themselves by patrolling the property and protecting their livestock. Family dogs need daily walks, jogs or runs and socialization off-property, because if there is no work to do they will not get adequate mental and physical exercise and may become hard to handle. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human.
Life Expectancy
About 12-15 years
Litter Size
This breed requires little grooming. The coat needs thorough brushing-out during the twice a year shedding season. You can get away with little attention the rest of the year. The Kangal Dog is a seasonal, heavy shedder.
The Turkish people claim: the Kangal Dog is an ancient flock-guarding breed, thought to be related to the early mastiff-type dogs depicted in Assyrian art. The breed is named for the Kangal District of Sivas Province in central Turkey where it probably originated. Although the breed has long been associated with the family of the Aga of Kangal, large landholders and chieftains, the majority are bred by villagers who take great pride in the dogs' ability to guard their flocks of sheep and goats from such traditional predators as the wolf, bear and jackal. The relative isolation of the Sivas-Kangal region has kept the Kangal Dog free of cross-breeding and has resulted in a natural breed of remarkable uniformity in appearance, disposition and behavior. Despite its regional origin, many Turks consider the Kangal Dog as their national dog. Turkish government and academic institutions operate breeding kennels where Kangal Dogs are bred and pedigrees are carefully maintained. The Kangal Dog has been featured on Turkish postage stamps and coins. The Kangal Dog was first reported in European and North American canine literature by David and Judith Nelson, Americans who studied the dogs while residing in Turkey. The Nelsons imported their first Kangal Dog to the United States in 1985. This dog, and subsequent imports, provided the foundation for the Kangal Dog in the United States. True Kangal Dogs are from the province of Sivas and the town of Kangal.
Others claim: the breed was first developed in the west by Charmian Steele and others in Britain. The first Kangals entered England in 1965. The first litter was born in 1967. The breed was called Anatolian (Karrabash) Shepherd Dog. Later, someone brought in a pinto dog from Anatolia and brought strife and division into the club, and a split between the Kangal (Karrabash) breeders and the Anatolian Shepherd Dog breeders.
Some people declare all Turkish shepherd's dogs to be one breed, the Anatolian Shepherd, however the true Turkish Kangal Dogs are said to be a separate breed from the generic Turkish shepherd's dog. The export of pure Kangal Dogs from Turkey has been controlled and now is virtually forbidden. The isolated historical conditions of the Sivas-Kangal region have resulted in the development of the Kangal Dog as a distinct breed, which has been declared the National Dog of Turkey and a national treasure. The true Turkish Kangal Dogs are first and foremost still primarily working shepherds. The Kangal Dog Club of America continues to work to ease import restrictions. Imported dogs are considered to be extremely valuable for their potential contribution to the genetic pool in the United States.

Alabai (centralasiatisk Shepherd): anmeldelser
Anmeldelse nr. 2 Alabai - straf for elskere
American Pitbull Terrier vs Ovcharka?
There seems to be a misguided few who believe that these Russian Wolfdog's can compete with the APBT. I ask you to give me your opinions and lets have a proper discussion/ debate.

Answer by TonyWithLove
Ovcharka (the "shepherd's dog") will always beat the APBT in a game of chess.
You want the truth don’t you? Well here goes. I’m 65 years old and fought dogs against the likes of Don Mayfield, Don Maloney, Walter Komosinski, Pete Sweeney, Earl Tudor, Jack Kelly, Jerry Bean, I could go on but what’s the point? I won my share and lost my share. IF there was a better combat dog than the pit bull, then that’s what the pros would be using. You’re talking about a 175 lb. dog against a 50 lb pit bull. The pit bull stil wins. Why? Because the Russian dog WASN’T bred for combat. I’ve seen pit bulls up against everything available and they still win. Are there exceptions to every rule? Of course. When you match a 175 dog against a 50 lb pitbull, the odds are stacked against the smaller dog. But, pound for pound there is NO dog capable of whipping a pit bull. As a matter of fact, I will put a 50 lb. pit bull up against any 175 lb Russian dog in the world.
There’s an old saying that goes like this, “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.” The American Pit Bull is the world’s greatest combat animal ever bred. If you think placing a 175 lb. Russian dog against a 50 lb. pit bull you have my deepest sympathies. When the pit bull grabs the big dog by the now and won’t let go, let’s see how much screaming goes on fro the big dog. And make no mistake, the pit bull IS gonna at some time or another bite the bigger dog in a place he ain’t gonna care much for. And once again, if the “pros” who fight dogs felt like the Russian dog was the best combat dog, don’t you think they’d be using them instead of the lowly pit bull? ‘Nuff said.
You guys are idiots for matching a 55 lb dog, the apbt, against fighting dogs/guard dogs 2 to 3 times its weight and size. Will this agrumemt ever end? There is not a dog on this planet in a pitbulls weight class that can beat it. A Jack Russell terrier weighs probably 15 pounds less than a pit yet it can never beat one; nor can most dogs twice its size. In order for it to meets its match you have to give it all most impossible odds to win. Fucking cowards! Then brag about what a shitty breed it is.
Lesson one: dogo’s, presa’s, corso’s, bully kuttas are all bandogs. They only took on their recent apperance within the past 20-30 yrs. And what’s the main ingredient in most modern bandogs? Apbt!
Lesson 2: the kangals you see online that are the most impressive are not purebred dogs! That’s why they are so rare even in their country of origin. These so-called “Kangals” are in fact, Boz shepherds or Malak/kangal crosses with those that look more like Malaks being the most popular. If a so-called kangal has a hanging upper lip, and block skull and not a round one, stands up square not rectangular, has overly defined muscle definition then its not a Kangal but one of the aforementioned.
Lesson 3: the best fighting dogs in the world are bandogs! Usually Boerboel crossed with pit, or working lines of Neo or tosa. One such dog, a Boerboel X apbt, was undefeated against all other breeds and still to this day holds the record.
Lesson 4: game pitbulls come from a separate and distinct line from just the casual show dog (aka amstaffs). These dogs are top prize fighters who lines date back several generations back to when the breed was being developed. Of course a 120 + lbs has the advantage but what more amazing here is that sometimes, the pit wins. Self preservation, unlike what many of the larger breed have, is not one of their traits; it was bred out. That ‘underdog’ — that fighting spirit is not something to be looked down upon.
Lesson 5: say we even the odds and made kangals, CO’s, CAO’s, bully kuttas, tm’s all equal in weight to a pit. Things wouldn’t be so “overrated” then would they?

I read all these posts and am amazed that you dog lovers would even want to talk about dog fighting! If you're so interested in who can beat who, why not just go to your neighborhood bar and start a fight with the biggest, toughest , nastiest guy in the place! Leave the dogs alone! They are basically peaceful critters and only fight over food, sex and turf.Dog fighting is a cowards sport. Dogs are to LOVE and be taken care of, not to goad into maiming and killing each other so some sagging ego ahole can brag about how "BAD" his dog is. As far as fighting dogs to make money, that's on the same plane as pimping you young daughter!
Dog fighting should be banned and people who indulge in it should be in prison for very, very long times.
If I've offended or hurt anyone's feelings, too bad!
I keep hearing this bs about "And weight class" LOLOL. THE APBT has fought in its weight class against TOSA INU in 1000's of matches and rarely beats THE TOSA. This is 100% fact like it or not.
But the most badass dog in the planet are the kangal breeds followed closely by the Caucasian Ovcharka and the Chinese version of ovcharka.
Bully, APBT, American bulldog bla bla bla are not as good fighters as mastiff breeds period. Its not just because of their size. Its also because of their bite force. A APBT has at best just over 400 lbs of bite force whereas a BOZ has been recorded over double that.
Mastiff breeds BOZ, TOSA destroy bulldog breeds period end of story for day.
Clearly the tosa dog vs apbt fights aren't done under pit fighting rules. There is a time limit and scratch rules. If left to the finish. pitbull wins 9 out of ten if weight is less than twice that of pitbull. Basically a today winning under japanese fight rules..don't mean anything really

KNow you lies mean Nothing. In russian they have vidoes and or game pit bulls getting murdered and killed by Causain SHepards and Mongolia mastiffs. THose dogs are twice as strong and twice as large. They ragdoll and seen many game Pits whing and have thier neck snapped or bleed to death. Even a game Pit did not last 1 minute against a fighting Cacasion shepard. I've rrotts in the US kill pits several times when i worked for animal control. Most overrated dog ever. ANd actually very cowardly when around a bigger dog. SPinesles and coward ass bully dogs. I loved knowing that PIts are a common prey for mountain lions in the west. Even fighting dogs heave been killed in seconds. ANd not one case of the
the us of th eopposite.
Your so full of bullshit. The game bread pit bull has beaten everything and anything that’s called a dog and then some. Pit bull’s have beaten wolfs and all dog breeds, even bob cats mountain lions and god dam baboons.
