Hofteledsdysplasi (HD) og albueledsdysplasi (AD) er efter min mening den stшrste udfordring for labradoravlen nеr vi snakker bekжmpelse af arvelige sygdomme. Dels fordi HD og AD ikke er mulige at kontrollere fuldstжndigt og dels fordi bеde hofte- og albueproblemer er potentielt invaliderende for de ramte hunde.

Hos labrador har der vжret et bekжmpelsesprogram med rшntgenfotografering af hofter i mange еr og de seneste еr ogsе af albuer. Desvжrre har bekжmpelsesprogrammet ikke resulteret i en markant nedgang af antallet af hunde med HD og AD og det er for mig at se fordi oplysningerne desvжrre ikke bruges i stort nok omfang i avlen.

Det er desvжrre sеdan at alt for mange (bеde opdrжttere og hvalpekшbere) lжgger alt for stor vжgt pе forжldredyrenes egenstatus, altsе at begge forжldre har A-hofter og 0 pе albuerne, og glemmer at se grundigt og kritisk pе afstamningen. Og det er desvжrre langt fra sеdan at 2 hunde med A-hofter og 0 pе albuerne altid giver hvalpe med samme resultat.

Grunden til at det ved HD og AD er vigtigt at se ud over forжldredyrene er at HD og AD ikke er bestemt ud fra et enkelt gen. Det er sеkaldte multifaktorielle sygdomme og man kan derfor ikke teste en hund for om den bжrer genetisk disponering for at nedarve HD eller AD ved en gentest. Den eneste mеde man kan fе et indtryk af om en hund er disponeret for at nedarve HD og AD er ved at se pе dens шvrige familie. Hvis hundens familie (det vil sige eventuelle afkom, halv- og helsшskende, forжldre, forжldres halv- og helsшskende) har en hшj frekvens af HD og AD, mе hunden forventes at vжre disponeret for at ogsе selv avle en hшj frekvens af syge hunde, hvorimod hvis der er en lav frekvens af HD og AD i hundens familie sе mе man forvente at hunden ogsе selv vil nedarve en lav frekvens af HD og AD.

Jeg vil forsшge at illustrere ovenstеende med et par eksempler.

Forestil jer hund nummer A.

A stammer fra et kuld med 8 hvalpe. A har selv A-hofter, men A’s 7 kuldsшskende har alle moderat HD grad D. Denne hund A vil jo hvis man udelukkende ser pе hunden egen status vжre fin til avl, men pе grund af dens kuldsшskende vil jeg i hvert fald formode at den mе have en meget hшj risiko for at nedarve dеrlige hofter.

Forestil jer sе hund B:

B stammer ogsе fra et kuld med 8 hvalpe. B har selv B-hofter, men alle B’s 7 kuldsшskende har A-hofter. Nu vil det desvжrre ofte vжre sеdan at hvis ”A” og ”B” hver fеr et kuld hvalpe, sе vil mange hvalpekшbere desvжrre tжnke at det vil vжre bedst at kшbe en hvalp efter A, fordi den jo har A-hofter, men for mig at se vil sandsynligheden for at fе en hvalp med gode hofter vжre langt, langt stшrre ved B’s hvalpe.

Sе sort/hvid er verdenen selvfшlgelig sjжldent, men for at fе den stшrste sandsynlighed for at fе hvalpe med gode hofter og albuer, sе er det meget, meget vigtigt at man ser meget grundigt pе afstamningen og langt mindre pе hundenes egenstatus. Egenstatus skal selvfшlgelig ogsе vжre i orden, men om en hund har A- eller B-hofter og 0 eller 1 pе albuerne betyder langt mindre end afstamningen. Selvfшlgelig bшr man efter min mening ikke avle pе hunde med C-hofter eller dеrligere eller 2 eller mere pе albuerne.

Et andet problem i den danske avl er, at for at kunne sikre sig bedst muligt ved at studere afstamningen og sundhedsstatestik i afstamningen, sе skal der vжre noget at studere. Det betyder at vi skal have sе mange sundhedsresultater, gode sеvel som dеrlige, registreret sе vi kan forholde os til dem, og der halter det desvжrre lidt. Der er alt for mange kuld hvor der ikke bliver rшntgenfotograferet afkom eller mеske kun en enkelt og sе er det umuligt at sige noget fornuftigt om kvaliteten. Heldigvis er der en del opdrжttere som sшrger for at fе deres afkom undersшgt og det er den vej vi skal, for kun ved at undersшge hundene kan vi lave en fornuftig udvжlgelse af avlsdyr.

Derfor piner det mig ogsе at se hunde brugt i avlen til flere hundrede hvalpe inden der begynder at blive undersшgt afkom. Enhver hund i avlen bшr bruges til nogle fе kuld hvalpe og derefter bшr der undersшges en stor procentdel af hvalpene. Og hvis afkommet viser sig at forbedre racen, altsе have en lavere frekvens af HD og AD end racens gennemsnit, sе skal avlshunden selvfшlgelig have lov at lave et fornuftigt antal hvalpe, men hvis det sе viser sig at hunden producerer en for hшj frekvens af HD og AD sе bшr den selvfшlgelig tages ud af avlen.

En genvej til at vurdere hundes kvalitet mht. HD er HD-indekset. Indekset bliver netop beregnet pе baggrund af den enkelte hunds egenstatus og ikke mindst afstamning og eventuelle afkom. Indekset er udformet sе 100 er racens gennemsnit, dvs. at en hund med HD-indeks pе 100 forventes at nedarve samme frekvens af HD som racens gennemsnit. En hund med indeks under 100 forventes at nedarve mere HD end gennemsnittet og en hund med indeks over 100 forventes at avle bedre end gennemsnittet.

Man bшr derfor altid kun parre hunde som i gennemsnit har HD-indeks over 100 og jeg mener faktisk at begge hunde bшr have indeks over 100 og gerne noget hшjere. Jeg vil selv gе efter indeks pе min. 105 for tжver og min. 110 pе hanhunde, dog selvfшlgelig sеdan at man aldrig skal stirre sig blind pе йn ting, sе hvis en hund har mange andre fortrin (temperament, eksteriшr, brugsegenskaber osv.) kan jeg godt nogle gange acceptere et lavere indeks, men aldrig under 100.

Mht. albuedysplasi findes der endnu ikke noget indeks, sе indtil videre er man nшdt til udelukkende at gennemgе afstamningen for at se kvaliteten af avlsdyrene. Forhеbentlig kommer der inden lжnge et AD-indeks.

I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.

I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

Hvis hundens familie (det vil sige eventuelle afkom, halv- og helsшskende, forжldre, forжldres halv- og helsшskende) har en hшj frekvens af HD og AD, mе hunden forventes at vжre disponeret for at ogsе selv avle en hшj frekvens af syge hunde, hvorimod hvis der er en lav frekvens af HD og AD i hundens familie sе mе man forvente at hunden ogsе selv vil nedarve en lav frekvens af HD og AD.

Jeg vil forsшge at illustrere ovenstеende med et par eksempler.

Forestil jer hund nummer A.

A stammer fra et kuld med 8 hvalpe. A har selv A-hofter, men A’s 7 kuldsшskende har alle moderat HD grad D. Denne hund A vil jo hvis man udelukkende ser pе hunden egen status vжre fin til avl, men pе grund af dens kuldsшskende vil jeg i hvert fald formode at den mе have en meget hшj risiko for at nedarve dеrlige hofter.

Forestil jer sе hund B:

B stammer ogsе fra et kuld med 8 hvalpe. B har selv B-hofter, men alle B’s 7 kuldsшskende har A-hofter. Nu vil det desvжrre ofte vжre sеdan at hvis ”A” og ”B” hver fеr et kuld hvalpe, sе vil mange hvalpekшbere desvжrre tжnke at det vil vжre bedst at kшbe en hvalp efter A, fordi den jo har A-hofter, men for mig at se vil sandsynligheden for at fе en hvalp med gode hofter vжre langt, langt stшrre ved B’s hvalpe.

Sе sort/hvid er verdenen selvfшlgelig sjжldent, men for at fе den stшrste sandsynlighed for at fе hvalpe med gode hofter og albuer, sе er det meget, meget vigtigt at man ser meget grundigt pе afstamningen og langt mindre pе hundenes egenstatus. Egenstatus skal selvfшlgelig ogsе vжre i orden, men om en hund har A- eller B-hofter og 0 eller 1 pе albuerne betyder langt mindre end afstamningen. Selvfшlgelig bшr man efter min mening ikke avle pе hunde med C-hofter eller dеrligere eller 2 eller mere pе albuerne.

Et andet problem i den danske avl er, at for at kunne sikre sig bedst muligt ved at studere afstamningen og sundhedsstatestik i afstamningen, sе skal der vжre noget at studere. Det betyder at vi skal have sе mange sundhedsresultater, gode sеvel som dеrlige, registreret sе vi kan forholde os til dem, og der halter det desvжrre lidt. Der er alt for mange kuld hvor der ikke bliver rшntgenfotograferet afkom eller mеske kun en enkelt og sе er det umuligt at sige noget fornuftigt om kvaliteten. Heldigvis er der en del opdrжttere som sшrger for at fе deres afkom undersшgt og det er den vej vi skal, for kun ved at undersшge hundene kan vi lave en fornuftig udvжlgelse af avlsdyr.

Derfor piner det mig ogsе at se hunde brugt i avlen til flere hundrede hvalpe inden der begynder at blive undersшgt afkom. Enhver hund i avlen bшr bruges til nogle fе kuld hvalpe og derefter bшr der undersшges en stor procentdel af hvalpene. Og hvis afkommet viser sig at forbedre racen, altsе have en lavere frekvens af HD og AD end racens gennemsnit, sе skal avlshunden selvfшlgelig have lov at lave et fornuftigt antal hvalpe, men hvis det sе viser sig at hunden producerer en for hшj frekvens af HD og AD sе bшr den selvfшlgelig tages ud af avlen.

En genvej til at vurdere hundes kvalitet mht. HD er HD-indekset. Indekset bliver netop beregnet pе baggrund af den enkelte hunds egenstatus og ikke mindst afstamning og eventuelle afkom. Indekset er udformet sе 100 er racens gennemsnit, dvs. at en hund med HD-indeks pе 100 forventes at nedarve samme frekvens af HD som racens gennemsnit. En hund med indeks under 100 forventes at nedarve mere HD end gennemsnittet og en hund med indeks over 100 forventes at avle bedre end gennemsnittet.

Man bшr derfor altid kun parre hunde som i gennemsnit har HD-indeks over 100 og jeg mener faktisk at begge hunde bшr have indeks over 100 og gerne noget hшjere. Jeg vil selv gе efter indeks pе min. 105 for tжver og min. 110 pе hanhunde, dog selvfшlgelig sеdan at man aldrig skal stirre sig blind pе йn ting, sе hvis en hund har mange andre fortrin (temperament, eksteriшr, brugsegenskaber osv.) kan jeg godt nogle gange acceptere et lavere indeks, men aldrig under 100.

Mht. albuedysplasi findes der endnu ikke noget indeks, sе indtil videre er man nшdt til udelukkende at gennemgе afstamningen for at se kvaliteten af avlsdyrene. Forhеbentlig kommer der inden lжnge et AD-indeks.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.

I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.

I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

What Harley-Davidson Exec’s Want For Christmas

Santa wasn’t good to the motorcycle industry in 2009. A weak economy, company layoffs, a housing melt-down, credit freeze, higher manufacturing costs and an ever discriminating consumer to boot. As Harley-Davidson executives ponder over what happen this year, I can’t help but believe there are some major things on their wish lists to Santa. So I’ve taken a scientific (parody alert!) guess of what some of H-D’s top executives want for Christmas:

Keith Wandell, CEO, Harley-Davidson: I got the head honcho job with the industry’s most iconic motorcycle manufacture in history, that has a cult-like following, with vendors tripping all over themselves to copy what we’ve done and I didn’t even have a motorcycle endorsement. I can’t think of anything more to ask for. Oh wait, all those government stimulus funds – listen up Santa, I’ve been to the White House twice for dinner. Have I not been nice enough? Please let the spinner land on my project.

Mark-Hans Richer, Sr. VP & Chief Marketing Officer: What the ho? Please, Santa send us Tiger Woods! As the leader of the world’s foremost authority on brand marketing, our team of cutting edge hoo-ha marketers developed a new strategy with Tiger as the spokesperson! It’s set to appeal to the outlaw in every man. We plan to dump that “ludicrous” campaign in favor of “Night of the Tiger”…complete with an exclusive Elin ghost flame paint scheme…

Bill Davidson, VP Core Customer Marketing: Please Santa let 2010 be the year for H-D in professional motorcycle racing. Nothing but wins – in the dirt or drag or NHRA Pro – whatever it says on my t-shirt. Wait, can you also help people forget about that botched firing of Anne Paluso. Really our plan is to go racing – go “team scream” or something like that.

John Olin, CFO: Motorcycle sales! Santa it’s not my fault. Please let me milk this “new in my job” for just a while longer. What do they expect? Miracles on Juneau Avenue! Doesn’t it matter that I’ve been here less time than Keith? I do have a motorcycle endorsement. And, my calculator is newer than Lawrence’s!

Matthew Levatich, President & COO: Santa please get the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to approve and recognize my heroic role in getting the special license plate commemorating Harley-Davidson through the political red-tape as the state’s official motorcycle. Yep, 2010 is shaping up to be a good performance review! Memo to Enrico… get the bottle of Chianti ready!

Earnings per share up 16.7%, revenue growth up 6%, $280M annual savings from restructuring, sales outreach with the 18-34 demographic grew at twice the rate of core customers, but in the first ever Consumer Reports’ motorcycle reliability survey, conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center about 1-in-4 owners of Harley-Davidson motorcycles reported experiencing a major problem with the motorcycle in the previous four years.

It turns out that BMW motorcycles were even less reliable than a Harley-Davidson with about 1-in-3 owners reporting problems in the previous four years. How did the Japanese manufactures perform? Only about 1-in-10 Yamaha owners experienced issues during that time, followed closely by Kawasaki and Honda.

However, reliability problems don’t seem to affect the satisfaction scores of owners and their bikes. When asked whether, considering everything, they would buy their bike again if they had to do it over, 75% of Harley-Davidson owners said definitely yes, closely followed by 74% of BMW owners and 72% of Honda owners. In contrast, only 63 and 60% of Yamaha and Kawasaki owners, respectively, would buy their bike again.

Both BMW and Harley-Davidson riders have segments that skew more toward the enthusiast and hardcore, meaning they tend to keep bikes longer and I wonder if this says something about the riders than the bikes. Could H-D riders be more critical about problems?

In 2012, the average U.S. retail purchaser of a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle had a median household income of approximately $89,500. The Company defined its U.S. core customer base as Caucasian men over the age of 35 and its U.S. outreach customers as women, young adults, African-American adults, and Latino adults. (Sources: 2012 Company 10K and 2012 Annual Review) The motor company no longer provides data on age demographics which had been rising in recent years.

Reliability is only one of several factors buyers consider when purchasing a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Among the bikes that needed repairs, survey respondents reporting having the most trouble with accessories, such as lights, instruments, switches, and radios (21 percent), brakes (20 percent), the electrical system (16 percent), and the fuel system (15 percent). Most of the repairs were fairly inexpensive, but for a company whose reputation relies heavily on the quality of its products the 1-in-4 number is perplexing.

What Harley-Davidson Exec’s Want For Christmas

Santa wasn’t good to the motorcycle industry in 2009. A weak economy, company layoffs, a housing melt-down, credit freeze, higher manufacturing costs and an ever discriminating consumer to boot. As Harley-Davidson executives ponder over what happen this year, I can’t help but believe there are some major things on their wish lists to Santa. So I’ve taken a scientific (parody alert!) guess of what some of H-D’s top executives want for Christmas:

Keith Wandell, CEO, Harley-Davidson: I got the head honcho job with the industry’s most iconic motorcycle manufacture in history, that has a cult-like following, with vendors tripping all over themselves to copy what we’ve done and I didn’t even have a motorcycle endorsement. I can’t think of anything more to ask for. Oh wait, all those government stimulus funds – listen up Santa, I’ve been to the White House twice for dinner. Have I not been nice enough? Please let the spinner land on my project.

Mark-Hans Richer, Sr. VP & Chief Marketing Officer: What the ho? Please, Santa send us Tiger Woods! As the leader of the world’s foremost authority on brand marketing, our team of cutting edge hoo-ha marketers developed a new strategy with Tiger as the spokesperson! It’s set to appeal to the outlaw in every man. We plan to dump that “ludicrous” campaign in favor of “Night of the Tiger”…complete with an exclusive Elin ghost flame paint scheme…

Bill Davidson, VP Core Customer Marketing: Please Santa let 2010 be the year for H-D in professional motorcycle racing. Nothing but wins – in the dirt or drag or NHRA Pro – whatever it says on my t-shirt. Wait, can you also help people forget about that botched firing of Anne Paluso. Really our plan is to go racing – go “team scream” or something like that.

John Olin, CFO: Motorcycle sales! Santa it’s not my fault. Please let me milk this “new in my job” for just a while longer. What do they expect? Miracles on Juneau Avenue! Doesn’t it matter that I’ve been here less time than Keith? I do have a motorcycle endorsement. And, my calculator is newer than Lawrence’s!

Matthew Levatich, President & COO: Santa please get the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to approve and recognize my heroic role in getting the special license plate commemorating Harley-Davidson through the political red-tape as the state’s official motorcycle. Yep, 2010 is shaping up to be a good performance review! Memo to Enrico… get the bottle of Chianti ready!
